To think that tuna in brine and tuna in sunflower oil are two very different things?

DP insists there is no difference between them, I say of course there bloody is! I like oily tuna in my sandwiches, I hate briney tuna in sandwiches but use it for cooking. DP always grumbles when I get the oily stuff because it's a bit dearer than the briney one 'I don't see why you have to get that one, it's just the same as the other one anyway!' he is a miserable git sometimes.

Anyway, while we're on the subject, what's that no-drain tuna like?

Yes I prefer the oil one and have gone back to it after using the brine one for years.

The no-drain one is just that, there is a little oil/juicey bit in there so I do give it a squeeze. I tend to buy whats on offer so dont intentionally get the no drain. Plus the cats love the oil from tuna

akaemmafrost · 03/01/2013 16:53

It's completely different, he is talking out of his arse.

No drain stuff is good, I prefer it but its about 20p more.

Tuna in oil IS the best, tastes loads nicer and the calorie difference is not worth worrying about for the massive difference in taste.

And that's that! Grin

whois · 03/01/2013 16:54

Younare both U. Tuna in spring water for me :)

VerySmallSqueak · 03/01/2013 16:54

I prefer tuna in spring water myself.

No fattening oil and no salty brine.

Horsemad · 03/01/2013 16:57

Tuna in spring water here too! Picked up an oil one by mistake recently, ewwww, it was horrible when I opened it and realised!

BananaBubbles · 03/01/2013 16:59

I hate the tuna in brine or spring water. The texture is wrong.

starfishmummy · 03/01/2013 17:00

I don't like it in brine at all, it just doesn't taste the same.

MaxPepsi · 03/01/2013 17:02

Oil for me

No idea on DH's preference but I do the shopping so he has no choice Grin however he's never requested it in anything else.

I get mine in bulk from costco and they don't do spring water, otherwise I'd probably get that.

I put the oil in the dog's tea!

Although I suppose his ignorance comes from the fact that his mum drains tuna until there's no liquid left at all so it's completely dry and you can't tell what it was in anyway Hmm

OP posts:
Fairylea · 03/01/2013 17:10

I drain it till it's dry. I used to work in catering and that's what we were taught to do :)

Oh and brine all the way!

galwaygirl · 03/01/2013 17:12

YA so NBU, I hate tuna in brine, has to be either spring water or sunflower oil. Brine and olive oil make it taste minging and I would eat tuna every day if I could!

GetorfsaMotherfuckingMorrisMan · 03/01/2013 17:12

I can't stand it in oil. Brine all the way. I am not paying more for spring water (bet it's tap water anyway).

peeriebear · 03/01/2013 17:15

Tuna in brine smells and tastes really, er, fishy. Tuna in oil has a really different flavour- slightly sweet and much more tasty. I only use tuna in brine for cooking if it's bought by mistake.

LouisWalshsChristmasCloset · 03/01/2013 17:18

Massive difference. Brine is all... briney urgh
i like sunflower or olive oil.
defintley not water. Its like chewing a flip flop

milf90 · 03/01/2013 17:19

i prefer the oil, whats the calorie difference (starting diet on monday so im intrigued...)

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 03/01/2013 17:34

at flip flop :o

DP also wanted me to mention that brine is what he spreads on the roads. Not sure why it's relevant though Confused

I bought I oil by mistake once, I didn't have a clue what to do with it! I couldn't imagine eating it all oily in sarnies. I usually get the spring water one too. I ended up using the oily one in a pasta bake for the kids.

diddl · 03/01/2013 17:43

I prefer the taste of the one in oil.

Wish it was as messless to drain as the one in brine!

Bella88 · 03/01/2013 17:43

Another vote for spring water...although any tuna in a can is grimly close to cat food in my book.

InNeedOfBrandy · 03/01/2013 17:46

Who doesn't drain the can? Am I just the strange one Grin and also in catering we drain tuna tins. Never heard of people not draining oil brine or sprig water off before.

Ilovesunflowers · 03/01/2013 17:48

Very different things. Tuna in oil makes me want to throw up!So greasy. Love tuna in brine.

BarredfromhavingStella · 03/01/2013 17:48

Wouldn't use it in brine but love sunflower oil tuna-wouldn't pay extra for a no-drain can so have no idea if they're any good.

Chopstheduck · 03/01/2013 18:06

Oh def is rather close to cat food. Dh was veggie until late teens, the first time I gave him tuna steak, he was astounded at the difference between it and what masquerades as tuna in a tin.

Has its uses though, tuna cheese melt toasties - yum!

BatmanLovesSparklyBaubles · 03/01/2013 18:08

Spring water for us too.

We also drain it as much as we can - don't want soggy sarnies!
