Can I make a decent porridge with just water?

And Oats of course!
I'm trying to eat healthier and love porridge but the milk adds calories.
Has anyone found a nice recipe where you can use water.
Weight watchers do one, but its rather expensive, so I know it can be done.

Nope. Porridge made with water is essentially wallpaper paste.

Use skimmed milk. Not very calorific at all.

AnyoneforTurps · 03/01/2013 15:34

Yes but remember to lock your door if you go for a walk while it cools..

PenisColada · 03/01/2013 15:35

I make it with oats , water, a spoonful of linseed and cinnamon. It is lovely. I don't like milk as it comes out of cow nipples.

katkit1 · 03/01/2013 15:37

it's possible if you soak the oats in water first - overnight - then make as normal, i like to add mixed spice to mine too.

RedTinsel · 03/01/2013 15:37

You can make it but it tastes horrible. Use semi skimmed milk.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 03/01/2013 15:41

I just never use milk, I think its yummy with just water! You must add a little salt to porridge however you make it though.

Scootergrrrl · 03/01/2013 15:42

Or soak the oats overnight in apple juice and add fruit and fat free yogurt in the morning. It's delicious.

CloudsAndTrees · 03/01/2013 15:42

Use skimmed milk.

Salmotrutta · 03/01/2013 15:43

Traditional Scottish porridge does not taste horrible if made with water.

It's oat flakes, water and a little salt.

Serve with milk and a sprinkling of sugar. We used to have it with the cream from the top of the milk.

katkit1 · 03/01/2013 15:44

agree with others though that a bit of skimmed milk will add to flavour and won't add too many calories

NolittleBuddahsorTigerMomshere · 03/01/2013 15:45

Would this be an option?

Slightly more fat in the Almond but fewer calories. Tastes better too IMO

mrscog · 03/01/2013 15:45

I've always just used water and made it in the microwave - 1 part oats to 2 parts water for 4 mins on high and then stir in a splash of milk at the end - I add fruit to mine and it's always nice.

Salmotrutta · 03/01/2013 15:45

Actually I don't understand how you can have an expensive recipe for porridge.

Poor folk pretty much lived on it up here back in olden days.

AQuarkTooFar · 03/01/2013 15:47

Always make my porridge with just water. I add a little honey and it tastes lovely.

iismum · 03/01/2013 15:47

Porridge should only ever be made with water! Milk is for soft southeners who don't know how to make it properly!

NolittleBuddahsorTigerMomshere · 03/01/2013 15:48

Salmotrutta, which one is expensive?

specialsubject · 03/01/2013 15:49

No. Use semi-skimmed milk. Then go for a walk afterwards.

the milk adds NUTRITION.

acceptableinthe80s · 03/01/2013 15:50

I was brought up on porridge being Scottish. My dad still makes his with water and salt, I prefer half water half milk, makes it a bit more creamy. I usually add raisins and cinnamon.

TotallyEggFlipped · 03/01/2013 15:51

I always make my porridge with water (can't stand milk). I add cinnamon and sugar/sweetener or sultanas if I want it sweet.

BeeBawBabbity · 03/01/2013 15:52

Oh yes, as was said above, water, oats and (a generous amount of) salt. But I am Scottish!

Salmotrutta · 03/01/2013 15:57

NoLittleBhudda -OP said the recipes on weight watchers were expensive.

And I don't understand how oat flakes water and salt can be expensive. That's what proper porridge is after all.

That and a sprinkling of sugar or maybe rasp jam if you are a big Jessie. Wink

JustAHolyFool · 03/01/2013 15:59

Water, porridge, salt. Anyone who makes porridge any other way is a heathen.

Borntobeamum · 03/01/2013 16:02

Op here. WW make a ready made porridge which is approx 60p a sachet.
I think that's expensive.
Thanks for all these ideas.

Proper Scottish porridge is made with oats, water and salt. That's how DH makes & eats it. I make it that way then add maple syrup or fruit or sugar to it.
