Can I make a decent porridge with just water?

And Oats of course!
I'm trying to eat healthier and love porridge but the milk adds calories.
Has anyone found a nice recipe where you can use water.
Weight watchers do one, but its rather expensive, so I know it can be done.

Soak the porridge oats in water overnight then cook in the morning.
Add salt to taste.
Serve with milk.

No need to soak the oats.

IMHO.

Salmotrutta · 03/01/2013 16:06

Don't buy sachets!

Proper porridge actively reduces cholesterol too by the way.

Justforlaughs · 03/01/2013 16:07

I'm obviously a heathen, and swear by using full fat milk, sugar and double cream, but that's why I'm a fatty! Grin I've been told thhe oats overnight inat soaking the oats in water overnight makes it really creamy but I've never been convinced enough to try it

Ah, didn't see the bit about WW Salmotrutter.

Chuck it in a slow cooker for a few hours and its ready and warm when you wake up :)
Will try linseeds and cinnamon, that sounds goooood!

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies · 03/01/2013 16:09

(I chucked some of the sugary water from the glacé cherries in mine the other day. It was sinfully yummy!)

MrsKeithRichards · 03/01/2013 16:10

Ready made porridge? Ridiculous!!

Soak over night if possible, just water and oats add a pinch of salt when cooking, takes minutes to make.

Or add a splash after and a teaspoon of sugar.

I can't stomach porridge made completely with milk, oh the decadence!

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies · 03/01/2013 16:10

lots of throwing in my kitchen Grin

hophophippidtyhop · 03/01/2013 16:11

I do half milk, half water, it's 'bear' able then.

MrsKeithRichards · 03/01/2013 16:11

You don't have to soak, I was unconvinced too until dh started putting some out for me at night and it does make the world of difference.

GrimmaTheNome · 03/01/2013 16:11

Porridge made with all milk is horrible. Half water, half skimmed milk suits me - but making with all water and adding a bit of milk to serve is good too. I like cinnamon and raisins cooked in it, or a mashed banana.

I don't know what the WW sachets have in them but some of the sachet things include (IIRC) lecithin which can reduce the tendency of porridge to volcanically erupt if you microwave it.

MrsKeithRichards · 03/01/2013 16:14

Sometimes I stir in a spoon of golden syrup, or add a banana or raisins or mixed frozen berries, or any other fruit lying about or all spice, or cinnamon but still think a pinch of salt is best! Yum!! I bloody love porridge.

whois · 03/01/2013 16:14

It's totally fine made with water. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, a small swirl of honey or a couple of chopped up dried apricots or a spoonful of fruits pure (microwave chopped up fruit to make).

Fridge oats are nice too where you mix oats with fruit and plain yog in the fridge overnight.

Ephiny · 03/01/2013 16:15

Yes oats and water (and salt?) is the traditional way.

I think it's nicer with some milk though. Surely a bit of semi-skimmed milk (say 100ml) can't add that many calories? Or if that's really a concern, can't you just have a very slightly smaller portion?

SugarplumMary · 03/01/2013 16:16

Yes - if you soak the oats for a while.

Not sure about sachet things though as we use big bags of oats.

turkeyboots · 03/01/2013 16:17

Make it with water and add a splash of milk and drop of honey to serve. Is lovely.

shrimponastick · 03/01/2013 16:20

Milk is rank.

Just water and a pinch of salt is the way to go. Or a spoon ful of golden syrup.
