To put rubbish in my neighbours wheelie bin? (trivial and boring)

As I'm sure you're aware, the festive season has made knowing when to put your bins out tricky. Ours were meant to be today but obviously weren't. walking home from work about 10ish I see that a couple of my neighbours have put theirs out, so I nip round the alley and get it and my next door neighbours.

I have a toddler who received many noisy toys that came in large boxes and we have no car and couldn't get to the tip so I popped a few bags in my neighbours bin which was only like half full.

before mumsnet I wouldn't have thought twice about this, but have seen how people can get whipped into a fury about bin related issues, and DH was abit Hmm (I would of taken neighbours bin out regardless of being to use it and often do)

I don't think YABU, but if you are friendly enough with your neighbours that you take out bins for each other then they probably won't mind.

RyleDup · 01/01/2013 23:16

I'd ask if its ok first.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 01/01/2013 23:17

I can't believe I've started a thread about this. she wouldn't even ever bloody know. Next I'll be asking mumsnet if it's alright to go for a poo

Couldn't you have put the cardboard boxes out for recycling?

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 01/01/2013 23:18

I can't go and ask her at 10pm and our bin men come about 7am

YABU but not criminally unreasonable lol ;) . I put the bin out a day early by mistake so had to go chuck another bag in while it was out today. If someone had filled it I would have been buggered as our bin men won't take spare bags and the local cats would have shredded it if I'd left it in the garden. Should have asked first.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 01/01/2013 23:18

they don't take cardboard here anymore, they swapped it for plastic.

Yes OP, you may be excused...

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 01/01/2013 23:20

and said neighbour would have possibly missed bin day altogether

Why would they mind? I'm assuming rubbish collections are free? (I'm in Ireland at the moment, where you're actually charged per collection) but if that's not the case and the bins are being collected tomorrow - there's no issue, I wouldn't think.
When you start worrying about what rubbish goes in your bin, you need to get out more Smile

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 01/01/2013 23:23

you're right floggingmolley now what about my poo?

OP posts:
Pancakeflipper · 01/01/2013 23:23

Nah, in this instance I see no problem with it. You got their bins out. There was space and it was being emptied pretty much straight away. IT's now empty so all happy eh?

My neighbours are on hols for weeks. I asked if we can use their bins during the hols and they were happy for us to do that as it makes it look like someones there ignore the none moving closed curtains

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/01/2013 23:26

Well I suppose as they haven't yet put their bin out yet they may have been waiting to stick the last bits from the house in it before putting it out and may be annoyed to realise you have taken the last bit of space. It's not a massive problem and they may well actually appreciate you putting the bin out for them but it could go either way...

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 01/01/2013 23:28

YANBU as long as you put bagged rubbish in there, it would only piss me off if you'd put 'loose' rubbish in there.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 01/01/2013 23:29

it's a single older lady who I believe was in bed (all lights off) so I don't think she was waiting to put anything else out.

LOL - I have done this a few times and often wondered if IABU! I sometimes imagine my neighbours popping out in the morning with their last bag of rubbish only to find some mysterious nappy filled bag lurking at the top.... I guess it is being unreasonable really, but very tempting last thing at night with just one more bag to squeeze in!

Devora · 01/01/2013 23:34

I have occasionally done this. I think the etiquette is:

  • ask them (if it's reasonably convenient)
  • if you can't, only do it to neighbours you know well
  • do it late, after they're in bed so you're sure they've finished putting theirs out (if it's not late, you can of course knock on the door and ask them)
Naysa · 01/01/2013 23:42

Our NDN once put her rubbish in our bin. She has two wheelie bins one of which she stole from us and she put a couple of bags in our's it meant the lid couldn't be closed the binmen told us, if it happened again they wouldn't take our bin.
So for that reason YABU! Grin

Oooh, im having this dilema...

Neighbour and i have bins in shared drive, if i put out mine i will put out hers and vice versa. She is away atm. I forgot to put out bins due to changed days last week, so mine is full. But bin/recycling are collected evry other week on rotation, so bin wont be until next week. She will still be gone then.

Should I start filling up her bin? I worry she might come back unexpectedly for some reason and I would be Blush or what if for some inexplicable reason the bins are collected and the rubbish has to wait another fortnight by which time she will be back?

Im considering filling garden waste bin with rubbish then swapping to hers on collection day....

HaleAndHeartyYuletideAges · 02/01/2013 00:01

I have massive issues with rubbish in my flat. 2nd floor flat, limited bin space, bin has to be closed and all contents bagged - any rules broken and they din't take your rubbish / you get shitty letters from the management company. There have been times where I've taken one last bag out early on the morning of the collection to find an undisclosed neighbour has taken the space in our bin and I've got no choice but to take it back inside and put it out after the collection has been taken, reducing my bin space for the following week. This last minute rubbish is usually food waste/ dirty nappies so it really pisses me off. Can't leave the bin bag next to the bin as it won't get taken, plus we're plagued by seagulls.

dayshiftdoris · 02/01/2013 00:02

As long as you don't do what my NDN...

-Put overspill rubbish in my half full bin every week without asking but was completely upfront about it to me as 'I didn't have as much rubbish as her' because I bloody recycle

-Put my bin out every week as 'we do put our extra rubbish in it'

-After a year call me at 9.30pm as I had banged the bin lid (wind blew it out of my hand) to ask what my f&&king problem was with her husband putting the bin out early, he went to f&&king work on a f&&king Tues and so needed to f&&king put it out early and she was doing me a f&&king favour so get over my f&&king self...

Needless to say they don't use my half filled bin anymore - when I picked my jaw off the floor I told her I was about to apologise for making a racket with the bin, that it was accidental, that I was very grateful for them putting my bin out but it had obviously become an issue for them therefore they should no longer do so... but that meant that they should no longer use my bin for their overspill.

Next I knew she was pounding on my door to 'talk things over' - literally banging and shouting through the letterbox at 10pm at night.

Her husband was going to the tip 3 times a week instead of 2 after that little incident (this a family of 2 adults and 1 child BTW)... He was clearly embarrassed by his wife's behaviour and apologised when she wasn't looking

My friends & I still chuckle about 'bingate'

soontobeburns · 02/01/2013 00:07

floggingmolly you pay for your bins to be collected in Ireland?

tenby84 · 02/01/2013 00:07

Sorry to hijack but wibu to put rubbish in the bin of the empy house opposite.

MrsKeithRichards · 02/01/2013 00:11

If your on friendly terms yanbu.

My neighbour facebooked me on holiday to ask if she could use my bin. Yeah no problem I said. Got back and the arsehole had forgot to put it out and it was full!
