To put rubbish in my neighbours wheelie bin? (trivial and boring)

As I'm sure you're aware, the festive season has made knowing when to put your bins out tricky. Ours were meant to be today but obviously weren't. walking home from work about 10ish I see that a couple of my neighbours have put theirs out, so I nip round the alley and get it and my next door neighbours.

I have a toddler who received many noisy toys that came in large boxes and we have no car and couldn't get to the tip so I popped a few bags in my neighbours bin which was only like half full.

before mumsnet I wouldn't have thought twice about this, but have seen how people can get whipped into a fury about bin related issues, and DH was abit Hmm (I would of taken neighbours bin out regardless of being to use it and often do)

soontobeburns, Yes you have to as people in Ireland do not pay rates or council tax like Britain.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 02/01/2013 00:22

right the rubbish is in there. no loose nappies or anything rank. if they don't come early tomorrow I'll remove the offending articles.

Blimey, if I put nappies in a bin I would be fined by the council.

apostropheuse · 02/01/2013 00:26

so where would youput nappies bureni?

bureni · 02/01/2013 00:28

I do not use them but they would need to be put into a yellow bio bag and collected once a fortnight then incinerated.

Bran, my bins are the same but paid for through the rates (N.I) grey bin for general waste but not uncooked food, brown for bio waste, green for plastics, metal cardboard and paper, a red crate for glass and bio bags for nappies etc. All are collected fornightly.

CelineMcBean · 02/01/2013 00:37

Can you not just check your council website for details of holiday collection times?

ControlGeek · 02/01/2013 00:38

Ooh you are lucky OP - my bin collection day is today too, but due to the bank holiday rearrangements, it won't be collected until Friday!

If it's just boxes and stuff and there is plenty of room, and their lights are out so they are not waiting to do their last minute bin-clearing then YADNBU. It sounds like if you hadn't put their bin out, it wouldn't have made it at all.

OTOH, if you were to put nappies or other smelly crap, or generally just chuck in any old rubbish because you couldn't be bothered to sort your recycling from your landfill, and you generated enough waste for 20 people let alone the 2adult-2dc family you were (yes, I'm looking at you ex-flat-neighbour!!!) then YWBU which is why I took to locking my bin while living in flats, until I could buy my own house

MrsKeithRichards · 02/01/2013 00:38

And how much does it cost on average?

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 02/01/2013 00:41

I promise you this will not be a habit! it's just ask the boxes from Christmas!

OP posts:
bureni · 02/01/2013 00:41

Not sure about ROI but my rates are just over 300 pounds per year which covers all the council services and water.

Feelingood · 02/01/2013 00:44

YABU if you don't ask first.

Otherwise get self to tip like th rest of us.

soontobeburns · 02/01/2013 03:26

bureni thanks and it seems even different areas of ni do stuff differently.

Im in Belfast but Castlereagh Brough for bins and we have out grey for general waste, blue for recycling paper and cans and brown for garden and food waste.

Never heard of a bio bin Confused and we dont have glass collections.

curiousuze · 02/01/2013 03:49

YANBU - I do this. But then my neighbour is dead.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 02/01/2013 09:13

all done, the bin men came and took the rubbish. Sadly most of the street missed it. And we've all learnt a little something about different types of rubbish collection in Britain and Ireland, well done team!

YesIamYourSisterInLaw · 02/01/2013 09:15

I always do it on bin day, if its getting collected that day I think it's safe to assume they have filled it as much as they need

ByTheWay1 · 02/01/2013 09:23

If waste is bagged and not going to make a stinky mess of my bin, anyone can put extra in there - neighbour once put dripping, stinking bag of yuck in there - garden stuff that had been left out in the wet - my god it reeked!!! made a point of scrubbing out my bin noisily as they left for work - and got a nice apology (though no offer to clean it out later or anything Hmm ) - they haven't done it again......

That's more expensive than I thought I wonder if that is more indicative of the actual cost of rubbish collection. I know I take these services for granted really, I pay my rates every month and don't really think about everything I get for it.

JamesBexleySpeed · 05/01/2013 10:57

landfill tax is currently £64 per tonne! That's one reason we all need to recycle; to stop it going to landfill.

I think it costs a little bit more than £1 here for collection (SE England). Obviously this is out of council tax, so we don't pay individually for the service, but that's the cost.

I would always ask before using a neighbour's bin but presuming they don't mind I don't see an issue. Be careful with sneaking rubbish in without someone's knowledge. It's flytipping and you can be fined.

NUFC69 · 05/01/2013 18:30

This reminded me of when I was working - the cleaner kept on finding the waste bin was full with "private" rubbish, so she couldn't put the office stuff in. One day she went through the plastic bags in the office bin, found out where they lived from an envelope, and then went and deposited their rubbish on their front door step! It still makes me giggle when I think about it.
