Ha - made you look for all the wrong reasons!

No - it's a cat.

Won't bore you but it's been as 'interesting' year. Actually no - it's been an effing difficult year. On top of some horrible things, such as a rat infestation in our home, we lost our beloved cat of 17 years. A very bad time for it - as my daughter has been diagnosed with depression. The cat was really good for her and she looked forward to cuddling her when she came in.

It has been a while since the cat died. My daughter is in a really bad state at present and we are going back to the doctors on Monday. She really really wants a kitten from a rescue centre. One to name, call her own and to love.

But here is the complicated bit. Recently I told my mother about my lymphoma. I had hidden it from her as she lives a long way away and worries. A lot. Now she seems to think that she will end up looking after me, which she says is fine. I am hoping that will not happen and I can manage my condition. I do not want that scenario at all. But when I mentioned the cat, she went potty. Usually she is lovely and we are close. She has a phobia about cats and cannot come into any house with one in it.

At present my mother does not visit very often. We don't go to see her that much but I talk to her every day. We have other animals (chickens) and to be honest, my daughter and I have a full and busy life where we are. I often get very tired too - so I don't do too much travelling. She feels that she will be unable to visit or look after me, if I should need it.

I have got a bit cross with her and told her this is my household and that I am a grown woman. An animal would really be beneficial to a very unhappy little girl. I think she should get some treatment for her phobia and not expect to dictate that we cannot get a cat.

Please don't say you hate cats - as that will not be unhelpful. But am I being unreasonable if I get the kitten? I am really worried about my little girl. We have never been without a cat and we are very much animal people.

Oh FTR's half Siamese lot are gorgeous. 2 girls (1 black and 1 tabby) and 5 boys (1 black and 4 tabby) - she's got pics on her profile although they're not completely up to date.

I'd always tend towards an older cat myself but that's just personal preference and anyone who wants a little 'un and is near to the north east is free to PM FTR. (She's said that's OK.)

Another tortie slave here! Soooo loving. We also have an 8 month old white/black kitten who is lots of fun (there might be some pics on my profile)
Go for the cat/s. How old is your DD? Unless she is very young she could help with caring for it.

issey6cats · 31/12/2012 11:30

as someone who has four cats and one of whom is a half siamese half mog i would say deffo get the kitten or two its been researched and proven that owning cats is beneficial with deppression, kittens are fun ,when you look at litter go for the more outgoing kittens as they show thier personalities at this age, one of my tuxies was timid as a kitten and six years later hes still a bit timid, while his tart of a sister is still bolshy and outgoing

Andthentherewere5 · 31/12/2012 12:00

Cats are so good for you, you should be able to get them on prescription! I have 3, two rescue sisters and a complete tart of a british blue boy. He is the only man in my life or house and likely to be the only man as no human can live up to him!

Rhubarbgarden · 31/12/2012 13:07

Get the cats! Get the cats! Don't even think about listening to your mother on this one.

Lymphoma and the treatment side effects are truly horrid. I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart.

VeganCow · 31/12/2012 14:58

Another cat slave here too, saying get the cat(s).
I have a friend with depression, who ended up hospitalised this year with it , the only thing worth getting better and coming home for, was her cats, she has said if she didn't have them life is not worth living.

VeganCow · 31/12/2012 15:00

also, not to dwell on the unthinkable, but here is a charity to help people with terminal illness and their pets.

AwkwardSquad · 31/12/2012 15:37

It's about what makes you and daughter feel happy right now. Get the kitten. Get two!

thegreylady · 31/12/2012 15:55

two kittens from same litter= magic :)
If it comes to your mum needing to come to stay there are cat management possibilities-when my cat phobic d-i-l comes to stay we move cats beds/bowls etc into the porch where they already have a litter tray.We designate one cat free room where d-i-l can be sure no cat will be allowed and we shut cats in said porch from 8pm at night.
Never done it for longer that 2 weeks though.

thegreylady · 31/12/2012 15:56

I have two ridiculously friendly/cuddly Tonkinese who are now 13+

apostropheuse · 31/12/2012 16:51

apostroph do they show typical tortoiseshell behaviour?purr incredibly loudly and are they chatty?

Yes they do indeed! They purr like motorbikes and chirrup and are extremely friendly. They're actually a pair of whores! They're true lapcats. Grin Honestly there's no aloofness or shyness with them. They are very determined, one of them in particular.

They get quite indignant when, after an hour of their "telling" you to let them out, you do so and it's raining. It's like "are you insane, you let me out in that?"!

My cats behave like dogs - they follow me when I go out and wait for my return then race to get to the door before I get there. I've had to chase them home on several occasions when trying to catch the train to go to work in the morning. Grin

ComposHat · 31/12/2012 19:00

apostropheuse aw they sound lovely. Our tortie follows us around too. She won't sit on laps but has her own spot on the sofa between us and chirups with pleasure. She is extraordinarily gentle but very wilful, if she is thwarted the look of withering contempt has to be seem to be believed.

When we first saw her at the rescue centre she was so withdrawn sitting in the corner of her pen, looking utterly defeated but when I went to stroke her and she started purring like billy-o. We got her back to the flat sauntered out of the cat carrier had a look around and settlementd herself on the bed as if she had never lived anywhere else.

A poem for all you lovely cat folk.

Thanks for sharing your stories, your pussies and your positivism. I shall dream of fur tonight.

my cats (by Charles Bukowski)

I know. I know.
they are limited, have different
needs and
concerns.

but I watch and learn from them.
I like the little they know,
which is so
much.

they complain but never
worry,
they walk with a surprising dignity.
they sleep with a direct simplicity that
humans just can?t
understand.

their eyes are more
beautiful than our eyes.
and they can sleep 20 hours
a day
without
hesitation or
remorse.

when I am feeling
low
all I have to do is
watch my cats
and my
courage
returns.

I study these
creatures.

they are my
teachers.

I don't like cats. But even I say get the cats! My brother is in intensive care with multiple stab wounds and if I thought it would help him just a little bit I'd get him a cat.

Get the cats!

Santasapunkatheart · 31/12/2012 19:33

Oh my goodness, WhenSanta. I really hope your brother recovers soon. What a horrible thing to happen.

TidyDancer · 31/12/2012 19:46

Oh get three cats! Wink

Seriously, you know the upsides here, if there is a downside to it, well you cross that bridge when you get to it, don't you? (hopefully that'll never happen)

CunnyFunt - how awful! :( May sound a daft question, but how is your DB doing?

WhenSantaGotStuckUpACunnyFunt · 31/12/2012 20:08

I don't want to hijack this thread, so come over here if you want to talk about him.

Get the cats!

HollaAtMeSanta · 31/12/2012 20:45

Get all the cats in the world!!!! Grin

NicholasTeakozy · 31/12/2012 21:16

Another vote for the cat(s). Do it, they're brilliant, I miss my last one, she was 17.
