To think a family of 4 can't go abroad all in for under £1100

I'm hoping that you'll be able to prove me wrong.
We didn't get to go abroad last year and are all keen to do so this year. But we only have £1100 to spend for accommodation, travel and food.
The closest I have found is a 4 day cruise for £1086 and we have done cruises before and know that costs on board are minimal for us and that all food is included, but it's to France from UK in October so weather won't be great.
DH says that for that price we can go away for a week to sunshine. I say not for just over £250 per person when it's 3 adults and 1 child. We are tied to school holidays as we won't take them out term time.
Can anyone prove my DH right?
Or is it the cruise for us?

I collected those Sun vouchers last year but think I was in the wrong "season." When I tried to book (in July) there were only holidays in October/November.

I guess I should do the first lot in 2013 and that way I might get the summer.

yes you can.
Villarenters for an apartment. I usually go Spain, self catering, with pool, and spend around £100 a week, during school holidays at Easter or around £150 for the summer hols.. Flights depend where you are traveling from, not paid more than £180 from Gatwick. I dont check in a bag, just take carry on. check skyscanners for the best deals.
Once there supermarket is very, very cheap, even going out to resturants is dirt cheap. The only time we spend over £30 for 4 of us, including booze, was when we went to a golf club restuarant.

We are looking at finding self catering in Poland - prices look reasonable and can get cheap flights.

OutInAllWeathers · 27/12/2012 14:15

We went in Oct half term for less than that for 2 adults, and 3 children but it was a cheap and cheerful hotel booked through an Internet company. Depends what you want really?

GambasAndCava · 27/12/2012 14:24

second Ihearsounds suggestion of spanish apartment in a complex with a pool with cheap flights .

Downside is that you have to selfcater and cook a lot, but food in spanish supermarkets is cheap as long as you pick the spanish brands - you could lighten the workload by BBQing, buying ready made food, pizzas, salads etc. If you look out for somewhere where you can get a bus/train from the airport, this will save hiring a car -coastal resorts round barcelona or malaga, or round benidorm area. Spanish buses and trains are good and cheap so you can still go on some day trips as well. If eating out do so at lunchtime for a menu del dia at spanish cafes/restaurants - 3 course meal with a drink for 5-10 euro per person and will only need a snack in the evening.

Just looked at something on villarenters. Very good prices. Think it might be doable. Does anyone know Play de los Ingles, Tenerife?

nkf · 27/12/2012 14:35

Thank you, Ihearsounds.

An I can't link on phone. Go onto holiday lettings, and select the lat week of may ( half term). Add sleeps 4 and close to beach/ lake and the Spain springs one should come up.

Try www.skyscanner.net/ Lots of options.

Camping! You get to let the kids go feral for a few days and once you stop trying to keep sand out of the tent you'll relax like never before.

I wouldn't recommend moving around though. Do your research, find a good site and stay there. Trying to relocate a tent and set up again for the sake of a change of scenery isn't worth it if there's young kids involved.

Sorry yes it was the oct half term I still can't believe it. Ice lolly is dirt cheap. Also look out for holidays that are different to the rest of uk. Our oct half term in glos often falls on different week to everywhere else hence cheap hols. I'm doing it again this year.
I'd second camping too and in a bit anal but I just let that go when camping its really good for me.

nkf · 28/12/2012 09:21

I love camping but I don't have a car. So once you've factored in hiring a car, camping stops being a cheap holiday.

I will try Icelolly too. It would be wonderful to get away.
