To think a family of 4 can't go abroad all in for under £1100

I'm hoping that you'll be able to prove me wrong.
We didn't get to go abroad last year and are all keen to do so this year. But we only have £1100 to spend for accommodation, travel and food.
The closest I have found is a 4 day cruise for £1086 and we have done cruises before and know that costs on board are minimal for us and that all food is included, but it's to France from UK in October so weather won't be great.
DH says that for that price we can go away for a week to sunshine. I say not for just over £250 per person when it's 3 adults and 1 child. We are tied to school holidays as we won't take them out term time.
Can anyone prove my DH right?
Or is it the cruise for us?

nkf
What time of year do you want to go? If you are prepared to have your main holiday at Easter time you may manage within that budget. If you want to go in the height of summer then you will struggle.

Chopstheduck · 27/12/2012 11:21

nkf - I've driven to lake Garda - it's perfectly doable, and try select camp.

nkf · 27/12/2012 11:23

I don't have a car. And I can only go in school holidays. I'll look at Select Camp.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2012 11:23

nkf
1 week May Half Term Italian Lakes with Eurocamp starts at £390 for the week

nkf · 27/12/2012 11:26

Select Camp the same. I'll check the Easter dates and also the temperature. I can't spend that kind of money for a rainy/chilly holiday.

MadameGazelle · 27/12/2012 11:28

Watching with interest as on a tight budget for next year's holiday...

greenplastictrees · 27/12/2012 11:30

nkf would you consider somewhere a bit different from the standard holiday destination? For example last summer I remember seeing cheap flights with Wizz Air to Serbia. Maybe try looking into somewhere like that? Hotels and public transport is usually quite cheap that way too.

Fluffy1234 · 27/12/2012 11:31

I mentioned Travel Republic earlier in the thread and just checked out Majorca on 13 th August for one week just under £1200 for all inclusive. This doesn't include hold luggage or transfers.

chibi · 27/12/2012 11:31

If you do tesco vouchers siblu is great, we only paid for petrol and food, cost us maybe a few hundred (once vouchers paid the rest - they were doing that 4x the pound value rewards thingy)

nkf · 27/12/2012 11:33

You are all so kind. I've overwhelmed. All these links and suggestions.
I'll look at Travel Republic. I've never done all inclusive but I can see the appeal.

greenplastictrees · 27/12/2012 11:36

Hope you find somewhere. Holiday costs are crazy money nowadays...at least during the holidays anyway.

forevergreek · 27/12/2012 11:41

Holiday lettings. We rented a lovely 4 bed villa with pool in Bulgaria 2 years ago. £400 for the week. Flights were £120 each ( child might be cheaper depending on age)

Go on holiday lettings and type in date and max price ( allowing for flights/ driving costs) so say max £500 for accomadation

WinterWinds · 27/12/2012 11:42

We have always managed to get our holidays for under a grand, thats 2 adults and 3 kids.

These are just a few tips we follow when we are searching!!
We always book accomodation and flights seperately, never ever book a package deal. And usually Self cater, which works out cheaper as well

We dont book too far in advance, usually book villa accomodation as it works out cheaper as you dont pay PP. You can if you are lucky get a villa/large apartment for as little as £350 if you book directly with the owners.
Also look out for cancellations.

Always use ryanair, Not the best i know but still the cheapest even with all the add ons, and they do get you there in one piece!!!

We manged to get a week in spain last summer for £700 for all of us, that was staying in s/c appartments (third year running we have been here!).
As the accomodation was stated allocation on arrival but we managed to find out where it was before we booked the first time, the named accomodation for the same place was £100+ more!!!
Be flexible on your flights (ie travel midweek), and flight times (early morning/late night

Be prepared to spend time searching best prices as you may find flight prices can and do change on a regular basis.
Sites like holiday rentals and owners direct are really good for private accomodation.

Hope this helps and you find a holiday within your budget!!!

Sierra springs Spain, is less than £300 for a week villa for 5. Fly to almeria ( have to look up flights)

izzyhasanewchangeling · 27/12/2012 11:51

I take dcs out of school and will do until GCSE years start.

There is more to life than formal education.

forevergreek · 27/12/2012 11:54

Also try may half term as often cheaper than summer holidays

moogy1a · 27/12/2012 11:57

Me me me me me. Take my suggestion!!

This place in Normandy is possibly the best gite for families ever!
it's the only place I've ever been to twice and it's ridiculously cheap. And they'll babysit while you go out to dinner!!

Kowalski · 27/12/2012 12:20

Sun £9.50/£15 holidays! We went on one in July, was a Keycamp caravan in south of France, dcs (7 & 2) loved it! Was a very long drive (10 hrs), stayed for a week but we also booked a gite in cognac and stayed there for 4 nights. We did have to take ds out of school a week early though. Think it worked out around £300 inc ferry, plus cost of gite (bargain at £40 night!) plus petrol and spending (didn't really eat out so saved quite a bit there). We're hopefully doing it again this year!

nkf · 27/12/2012 12:23

WinterWinds, thanks for all those tips. When you say not to far in advance, do you look very close to the date? Days? Weeks?

I could go in May half term or at Easter but I am really really seeking heat this time. And even the Canary Islands seems to be only around 22 degrees in Spring.

nkf · 27/12/2012 12:27

Forevergreek, can't find the Spanish suggestion. There's a Sierra Springs in California. Now, that would be something.

ledkr · 27/12/2012 12:28

We went to Majorca two years ago for about 400 quid. Me dh my friend and two kids aged 7 and. 8. We could t believe it either. Booked it on ice lolly website

nkf · 27/12/2012 12:29

In the school holidays?

EweBrokeMyManger · 27/12/2012 12:34

Nkf it says that temp in the canaries but it feels way hotter than that, i have been severely burnt in feb there before.

We do the easyjet flights and villa from lettings websites ourselves as well. Have been to italy, canaries and morocco for around 1000 for 4.

Another one suggesting The Sun £9.50 holidays. You can book a week at a Eurocamp abroad then book your own cheap flights through a low cost airline.
