to want a tumble dryer?

littlestressy · 25/12/2012 22:15

My DH and I try really hard to be energy efficient, turning off lights, turn thermostat down etc. At the moment we dry the washing over airers including a heated one.
But my laundry drying pile is never ending, DH is a nurse so needs clean uniform each shift and we use cloth nappies....really starting to want a tumble dryer. AIBU to want one for a slightly easier life? Thinking about January sales...

I don't give a shit about the environment. Or the cost.

I hate studenty style wet clothes everywhere

Tee2072 · 26/12/2012 14:56

Exactly Mariah!

And if I had four children? I'd have 2 tumbler dryers. Xmas Grin

MariahScarey · 26/12/2012 15:01

Yes. We have a monster. In use all winter.

Men wouldn't think twice

PigletJohn · 26/12/2012 15:05

Although a full load of cotton will use about 60p worth of electricity, a more typical load, not so heavy and with synthetics, will use about 30p worth.

I like a washing line in dry weather, and a tumbler in wet.

At least it will not cause condensation, damp and mould. Draping wet washing around your home will.

snowtunesgirl · 26/12/2012 15:25

Get one! We finally bought one a few weeks ago and it has made a huge difference to our flat. It's tidier and the place feels warmer as there isn't so much condensation from drying washing.

freddiefrog · 26/12/2012 15:35

God no, I couldn't be without mine.

I can't stand having washing drying around the house. It goes outside when it can and then gets finished off in the dryer, or with weather like we have at the moment, it goes straight in the dryer. Ours is fairly efficient, no real increase on the electric bill

Saccrofolium · 26/12/2012 15:35

Put a child in a pram next to a tumble dryer = Instant sleep. Fact.

Chubfuddler · 26/12/2012 15:43

I haven't had one for four years, since our washer/dryer broke and we replaced it with just a washer because the dryer bit was shit.

I have two children and a dog and live in the country. I am buying a tumble dryer at the end of January even if we have to live on beans on toast for a month. I'm sick of laundry hanging around drying b also sick of not doing laundry, leading to massive piles mounting up, because I know I can't get it dry because there's still a load on the airer.

Saccrofolium · 26/12/2012 15:44

Chubfuddler I'm actually a bit excited for you for January! Life is about to get immeasurably better!

bamboobutton · 26/12/2012 15:47

Get one!

We are on a pre-pay elec meter and haven't had any shocks when checking the credit.

Give clothes an extra spin before tumbling and it reduces time it takes to dry. a fullish load takes to70mins on low heat with my indesit.

financialwizard · 26/12/2012 15:53

I could not be without ours with 2 dc and a husband who is a filthy Herbert when he gets home from work. Saves me untold stress, and I have lovely fluffy towels.

WankinginaWinterWonderland · 26/12/2012 16:01

YANBU I miss mine Sad

LineRunner · 26/12/2012 16:05

I have a tumble drier. I would struggle in wet weather like this to dry clothes otherwise. I don't want to have to put the heating on just to dry clothes all over the house - surely that defeats any environmental argument anyway?

SoleSource · 26/12/2012 16:11

Yanbu

What took ya so long?

Confused
foslady · 26/12/2012 16:16

Everyone goes on about dishwashers but I can't see the point unless you're a large family (all that seems to happen is instead of arguing about who's washing up it turns into who's stacking/not stacked correctly!).......but tumble dryers are another issue - they ARE a necessity, and re the enviroment I used to end up rewashing stuff because I couldn't dry it all out before it started smelling musty, so that's worse - electricity, water and chemical wastage!!!!

BarnYardCow · 26/12/2012 16:52

Treat yourself, best present my husband brought home, use it all the time now, hated the airers full of washing in the way.

hallamoo · 26/12/2012 16:52

Tumble driers are NOT a necessity, and I can't believe all the people saying 'stuff the environment' I have 4DC (as I said), I wash every day, and I don't have washing drying all over the house. I have one airer on the landing (heat rises), and I don't put the heating on just to dry the washing.

If you hang things properly to dry, they need minimal ironing. It's no extra work, and it doesn't take that long.

The only (small) issue is when I wash the bedding, but I do one or two beds at a time and use the bannister (galleried landing) to dry the duvet covers.

I'm really shocked that people are so short sighted about the environment! Washing might be dry a little more quickly but it doesn't save any work; you still need to load, unload, shake, fold, put away etc.

Tee2072 · 26/12/2012 16:56

The environment is something I never worry about. The earth has been around for millions of years. It will continue to be around for millions of years.

Life is too short to hang out washing. Especially with 4 DC. Do you enjoy martyrdom and smugness?

cocolepew · 26/12/2012 16:58

I use mine loads during the week, I haven't noticed it using that much electric tbh (we're on a payment meter). The radiator in the kitchen is broken so it warms it up too.

Tee2072 · 26/12/2012 16:59

Also, doing laundry every day is probably worse for the environment than running a tumble dryer. All that water and washing powder into the sewers.

Tsk tsk.

raspberryroop · 26/12/2012 17:04

And having 4 kids is very environmentally unfriendly o'smug one

hallamoo · 26/12/2012 17:06

No martyrdom, and with 4 DC, I have nothing to be smug about. I just can't see the point of having a tumble drier. The small pros don't outweigh the cons for me.

Whether I wash every day or not has no bearing, I still have the same amount of washing whether I wash every day or do several loads on one day - what an odd thing to say!

LineRunner · 26/12/2012 17:07

I do care about the environment.

Without a tumble drier I honestly could not possibly dry everything I need to dry (towels, bedding, clothes) in this weather in my very small house unless I had the heating on - and even then I don't think it would all dry properly.

I don't have a car or a dishwasher. I'm hardly a carbon criminal. I just don't want the house to smell of mould.

raspberryroop · 26/12/2012 17:09

The occasional use of a tumble dryer would have far less effect on the environment than having 4 children.

Tee2072 · 26/12/2012 17:09

Whatever.

Bored now.
