...DH is currently grumping and sweating over a flat pack mini kitchen for DD2 from ikea. It's her main present and has been top of her Xmas list forever. She does have loads of other gifts under the tree from us and family but this was her main thing.

DH was planning to show her the box and then "have fun putting it together tomorrow"

I contend that you cannot show a picture of a 4 year old a flat pack assembly instruction book on Christmas morning and expect that to be an amazing experience for them no matter how much "fun" it is putting it together.

He is angry at me for asking him that we do this tonight as he wanted to go to bed. I said I would do it myself if he didn't want to but really think it has to be made for her to see when she wakes in the mornings. He is now insisting on doing it grumpily jand refuses help. So AIBU?

We never put anything together, its part of the fun putting things together

MrsFlibble · 24/12/2012 23:58

Nor i, i got a Hello Kitty thing to put up in the morning.

twooter · 24/12/2012 23:59

We put it together, so you get the big wow effect

Wandawingsthe2nd · 24/12/2012 23:59

At 4 I'd be putting together. YNBU.

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 24/12/2012 23:59

Made up

Monty27 · 24/12/2012 23:59

Sausage I'd want it assembled. But then is it worth it if dp's going to get angry??

AgentZigzagHasABigYuleLog · 24/12/2012 23:59

I've just had a buzz about on the scooter DH put together for DD2 Grin

Putting it together, even if it's with the Dad she loves very much, isn't fun.

It'll be worth the effort to see her face Smile

In this instance, no YANBU. The Ikea kitchen is a bitch to put together, however, for a lot of other things, it's loads of fun having the child help, so you would be BU.

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/12/2012 00:00

YANBU. I remember christmas as a child and all toys should be easily accessible and in full working order when opened.

sleeplessinsuburbia · 25/12/2012 00:00

I'd want it assembled, imagine doing all that shit assembled tomorrow with a full house of excitement and action?!

I even remove wire tags that hold the toys in the box if there are too many, much nicer to launch straight into play. I think most people just like a neat box to wrap.

ninjinglebells · 25/12/2012 00:01

I made DD2's kitchen last year - was great seeing her climb all over it play with it straight away.

Playmobile I could see that you could put up together, not a flat pack kitchen!

sausagerolemodel · 25/12/2012 00:02

But it's an ikea flat pack. Work of the devil. Looks like a few bits of wood and no nice colour pics on the packaging to show the promise of what is inside. She is only four? Isn't the eyes lighting up thing meant to be a magical moment? Even my eyes didn't light up when my full size ikea kitchen arrived in flat pack boxes....

YANBU, had to be put together to get the full effect!

stella1w · 25/12/2012 00:04

I assembled my 4 yo,s kitchn in advance and wrapped it! Mainly because assembling it toghererg with her on xmas day wd be a pain and partluy to get the wow factor...

AgentZigzagHasABigYuleLog · 25/12/2012 00:04

Just go and show blokey how it's done sausage Wink

sausagerolemodel · 25/12/2012 00:04

Sorry posted with lots of replies. Under other circumstances we do out stuff together with her and expect her to help and understand. But I did suspect it might be a PITA to assemble. Anyway, I am having a glass of Wine ;-)

Anything from ikea pre assemble unless you fancy spending Christmas Day sat on the floor crying and mumbling

They said it was easy

AgentZigzagHasABigYuleLog · 25/12/2012 00:05

And how it's done with good grace

sausagerolemodel · 25/12/2012 00:05

By the way, merry Xmas and thanks for the responses Smile

It'll be easier to understand after a few bevvies.

FestiveElement · 25/12/2012 00:10

YANBU, it should be assembled by elves in Santas workshop, not by Daddy on Christmas morning.

HairyGrotter · 25/12/2012 00:12

I put DD's drum kit together whilst supping wine...do it now, relax tomorrow

Idocrazythings · 25/12/2012 00:14

Those toy kitchens are really hard to put together- maybe you should keep the bugger for her birthday instead Grin

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 25/12/2012 00:14

Just put it together yourself and save the huffing. You'll do a better job too, having actually read the instructions

MaryChristmaZEverybody · 25/12/2012 00:16

I remember the year we decided to assemble ds's bunk bed on Christmas Eve. Not to mention the fucking garage that had (we discovered at midnight) over 150 stickers to make it look like the picture on the box.

And I'm usually pissed doing it.

Nowadays, thank goodness those days are behind me. And I can get drunk while waiting for the kids to appear from the pub Hmm
