OH is adamant he's having sweetcorn with his roast on Tuesday.

There's no sweetcorn in the freezer and I'm not buying any.

It's just wrong.

AIBU?

I do corn on the cob with a roast. I baste with butter and sprinkle chilli flakes, seasalt and black pepper on them. They go like hot cakes.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/12/2012 14:32

... and how many Good Housekeeping-spouting types will be eating yorkshire puddings with Christmas dinner? Or have it with roasts other than beef? Just saying... Wink

GambasAndCava · 23/12/2012 14:32

We're having sweetcorn with our christmas dinner, tinned green giant at that, cos we like it and its easy - also having roast pots, sprouts and cauliflower cheese, both cooked fresh/from scratch

DowntonSprouts · 23/12/2012 14:33

Ah but we have both turkey and beef- so yorkshires are acceptable.

Still, I'd buy it for him anyway.

MadamFolly · 23/12/2012 17:31

Baby sweetcorn most certainly belongs in a roast, especially roast beef!

If it were the other way round and he refused you sweetcorn, there'd be hordes of posts calling him a controlling bastard. For god sake is it going to hurt you to put a bit of sweetcorn on his dinner. Grow up.

Floggingmolly · 23/12/2012 17:37

Who makes the rules? As a child, we always dutifully had Brussel sprouts with Christmas dinner, even though nobody ever ate any.
Now I'm in charge of catering, I'll have whatever the family actually like to eat.

CiderwithBuda · 23/12/2012 17:38

Is he my DS?

Doubt it as my DS is only 11. But he will be having sweetcorn and ketchup with his Xmas dinner. And yorkshires. Sigh.

financialwizard · 23/12/2012 17:40

I love sweet corn so I would happily have it with Christmas dinner. I also make Yorkshire Puddings with every roast.

Ketchup or Brown Sauce on roast dinner is morally wrong though, and just yeurgh.

drjohnsonscat · 23/12/2012 17:48

Puzzled at people who think there aren't any rules. Of course there are rules, laid down by the Queen, baby Jesus, the Good Housekeeping Institute ( of which Laurie is clearly a founder member) and me.

Sweet corn is wrong. As are Yorkshires. Love both but not in Christmas dinner.

notnagging · 23/12/2012 18:06

Yanbu. I have the same argument over rice. Rice is not a Christmas meal!

LeeCoakley · 23/12/2012 18:09

I hate peas with Christmas dinner. My db(52) has never eaten any other vegetable in his life so while we are tucking into green beans, cauliflower cheese, carrots, sprouts and parsnips (along with chicken, duck, pulled pork and roast potatoes), he will sit there with chicken (only breast), heaps of potatoes and peas all covered in pepper. I wish he had a wife to take him in hand and show him the delights of vegetables!

Oh, and sweetcorn is perfectly ok with any meal. Prefer cob but tinned will do in an emergency.

IslaValargeone · 23/12/2012 18:15

I was going to say as it's Christmas, turn a blind eye, but ketchup on roasties!

Time to take a stand.

SantasLittleElfycat · 23/12/2012 18:48

Of course it goes! Along with the main bird served on the day and the most commonly served roastie (spuds) they come from the American continenent.

It's bread sauce that has no place!

We're having it as I added another veg type (and extra handful of sprouts) for each time MIL made sure to remind me to make sure I don't do too much veg. It was added after cauliflower, broccoli and butternut squash (another american). If she says anything Xmas morning I'll have to add baked beans as I don't have anything else.

crunchbag · 23/12/2012 18:54

YABU, as long as it gets eaten who cares.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 23/12/2012 19:04

Butternut squash is South African!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 23/12/2012 19:04

(And I am sticking with that!)

ItsALongWayToPickAWilly · 23/12/2012 19:07

It's so very wrong.

DP is also insisting on it. He's cooking the dinner so he can have it if he wants :)

PickledInAPearTree · 23/12/2012 19:08

That's wrongitty wrong wrong!

All shades of wrong.

AmberLeaf · 23/12/2012 19:13

Creamed sweetcorn is a christmas dinner essential! waaay better than horrible bread sauce, which is what it replaces in my house.

I would eat normal sweetcorn with a roast, but not christmas dinner purely because I have it in the creamed form though.

Frozen sweetcorn is nasty, tinned is best. freshly picked corn on the cob is tops though.

PurpleTinsel · 23/12/2012 19:16

YABU.

It's not like everyone has to eat the exact same meal up and down the country just because it's Christmas. If he wants to eat sweetcorn, let him.
