To think piercing babies ears is horrible?

sparklypuddles · 22/12/2012 20:30

2 acquaintances have recently had their under 1 dd's ears pierced.
I can't see why someone would do this, not just due to being needlessly painful for a baby who doesn't understand, but also the likelyhood of a little girl catching earrings while playing, or pulling them out and them being a choking risk.

Unless theres some reason i've missed behind doing it so young?

Slow AIBU day?

LookingForwardToMarch · 22/12/2012 20:45

Yes agreed no one can stop the parents having it done

But lets face it, a one year old baby isn't going to be looking in the mirror thinking 'oooh this looks nice' Hmm

So it's basically mums 'pimping' up their little fashion accessory.

AlienRefucksLooksLikeSnow · 22/12/2012 20:45

Really? alright then, it looks shit.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 22/12/2012 20:45

Nah D0G, I'm waiting for the A word and I have my bingo dabber at the ready.

BluelightsAndSirens · 22/12/2012 20:45

Dog Peter Andre?

Oh and it is abuse.

LookingForwardToMarch · 22/12/2012 20:46

lol sorry relatively new to mumsnet....

What's the 'p' and 'A' word?

sausagesandwich34 · 22/12/2012 20:47

it can be a cultural thing

certainly Italian's get them done as young as possible -their logic is it creates the least distress in a small baby and they will have no memory of it

Starfishkiss · 22/12/2012 20:47
Biscuit
Ummofumbridge · 22/12/2012 20:47

YANBU -
I had Chardonnays nose pierced at 6 months. I wanted her to be a bit youneeeeq.
Ear piercing is common

VelvetSpoon · 22/12/2012 20:48

I actually don't think babies can be chavvy, in the same way as they can't be ugly.

CurrentBun · 22/12/2012 20:48

YANBU to dislike it, you're entitled to your opinion. I happen to agree with you.

foxy6 · 22/12/2012 20:48

whats the p word?

and i dont like it i waited until dd was old enough to want them done herself.

uptheamp · 22/12/2012 20:49

don't like it either, it's a bit crackers imo, and i would be worried that the child would pull it out

don't worry about people saying they always do on here when something has been discussed alot.

it's easy to ignore a thread rather then post on it though

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 22/12/2012 20:49

Sorry VelvetSpoon, but I've seen babies that look like badly mashed potatoes, so I have to disagree about the not ugly thing.

LookingForwardToMarch · 22/12/2012 20:49

Nah wasn't clling the babies chavvy....

VelvetSpoon · 22/12/2012 20:51

Sausagesandwich true - in my family the norm was within the first 6 weeks.

VelvetSpoon · 22/12/2012 20:53

No, all babies are beautiful :) Well ok, some are interesting. But they're not ugly!

happierwithgin · 23/12/2012 07:39

I thought only Chavs and Gypsys did that.

Strawhatpirate · 23/12/2012 07:46

I personaly wouldn't do it. I'm not paticularly shocked by it either. It's a bit of a non issue really.

cjbk1 · 23/12/2012 08:08

YANBU

iloveshortshorts · 23/12/2012 08:20

Is it really your business?
I had my ears pierced when i was a baby, i don't hate my mum for it, im actually glad
It was done when i was young.

iloveshortshorts · 23/12/2012 08:22

Oh and im not a chav or a Gypsy.

doublemuvver · 23/12/2012 08:27

I don't like it but in many cultures it is preferred. MY DH's Arab family have been hovering at DD's ear with a needle for years but I won't give in! She can have it done when she asks me and give me a good reason ("my friend has had it done" will not qualify!)

Theicingontop · 23/12/2012 08:27

Had mine done as a baby too. One got ripped out while I was playing under a crochet blanket when I was 2. Got a nice little scar there that for some reason gets really itchy...

Yeah I wouldn't do it, but each to their own. It's hardly grade A child abuse.

Tailtwister · 23/12/2012 08:27

I wouldn't do it personally, but don't really care what other people do.
