I mean the bloody shops are only shut for 24 hours these days? Why all the panic?

We stopped in our local Sainsbos at 5 this evening to get a few bits I'd forgotten, not even Xmas stuff. They had extra staff standing disconsolately in the rainy car park with 'spaces' signs and glow sticks. Which wad ironic really as there were loads of spaces and the store was no busier than a usual Saturday!

HollyBerryBush · 22/12/2012 20:22

5qm - ASDA was heaving - I only wanted sprouts and the long tin foil that the corner shop dopesnt sell .... what is up with these people? I thought 5am was plenty early to nip in and out

Shinyshoes1 · 22/12/2012 20:40

I stopped putting stuff in my trolley when it was literally falling off the top . The trolley was FULL .

I have just looked in the fridge and I am actually embarresed . Still , no shopping for me for at least 2 weeks :-)

I have got non-perishable in good time and an on line delivery today. This is because shopping with ds's (special needs/wheelchair user) is difficult at the best of times and absolute hell when the shops are busy; i don't intend to.go near a shop until he is back at school. I do this every school holiday and not just xmas.

threesocksfullofchocs · 22/12/2012 23:30

because I want to only pop in next week for stuff I have ot get.
I want a break from the "big'shop.

wildfig · 22/12/2012 23:46

There's also an element of going round the aisles wondering what you've forgotten, because you always get home and find you've forgotten something vital like tin foil/onions/milk, so everyone's peering at each other's trolleys for reminders, and then thinking, oh God, everyone's got the yard of Jaffa cakes, quick, Steve, go back and get that yard of Jaffa cakes...

LadyMaryChristmas · 22/12/2012 23:49

I'm planning on staying in the house and watching movies/playing games with ds/reading books for as long as I can, hence why I did a massive larger shop.

chocolatespiders · 22/12/2012 23:55

Marks and spencer closes at 5pm tomorrow and reopens again at midnight!!!

LadyMaryChristmas · 22/12/2012 23:55

Poor shop staff Sad

chocolatespiders · 22/12/2012 23:58

Then opens Boxing day at 7am- not fair

ouryve · 22/12/2012 23:58

I was in Sainsbobs at 8am and there were couples in there with a list each, plainly stocking up for spending the next year in a bunker.

LadyMaryChristmas · 23/12/2012 00:01

It's incredibly depressing how a religious festival has been turned into a mass consumerist frenzy. It's no longer about the birth of Jesus/pagan celebration of the middle of winter, just about how much money people spend. Sad.

Plomino · 23/12/2012 00:19

DS1 got back from work just now ( works at Waitrose) and said it was utter utter madness . Everywhere he stood , was as part of a queue , he put out about 50,000 carrier bags , and every shelf he filled with fresh stuff was emptied in 15 minutes. And he was incredulous at the amounts being spent . Apparently one bill was over £1000 , and there were several others of £500 plus . With no alcohol! Makes me feel like an amateur .

He's now gone for a lay down before going back into the fray tomorrow and Christmas Eve. Poor bugger.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 23/12/2012 00:25

Depressing LadyMary?
It's a festival whether religious or not.
A time to indulge in lovely food and to exchange gifts with family and have a bit of fun.
I've lost in the last 3 years a sister and a mum, they'll be in the uppermost of my thoughts this year.
But in that timeline my niece has had two children.
Life goes on, and in the depths of winter we need Christmas.
I still love it.

LadyMaryChristmas · 23/12/2012 00:38

The pagan tradition is that yule is a time for sharing food with loved ones, not for lining the pockets of the corporations. It's OK to love it and be sentimental though. Sounds like a stressful few years for you, LadyBeagle. Sad

I've been squirrelling (sp?) chocolatey treats/crisps etc for a few weeks, roast is in the freezer also, (lamb) bought spuds etc in the week. went today to get fresh cream and pigs in blankets, dates were 25th/26th December so I'll get them in the local tesco/co-op tomorrow or monday. If I'm stuck for bread or milk we'll have corner shops open on xmas day.

It's all a loada bollox imo. :)

VestaCurry · 23/12/2012 01:43

Haven't darkened the doors of a supermarket to do the pre Christmas food shop in about 8 years. Have always done it online, find it much less stressful. Got free delivery and another online voucher to use this year, which took £8 off the final bill so am happy.

TenPercenter · 23/12/2012 01:45

Because people like to have lots of nice things to eat at Christmas? We haven't had any kind of frenzy tbh, I got lots of frozen snacky things and a turkey the other day and we have just had a Sainsburys delivery, very little panic involved tbh.

It's quite nice for one week a year to do a shop where you can just add things you fancy, or wouldn't normally have. Meal planning and budgeting is good, but can get a bit wearing, although have still meal planned for the days other than xmas.

I did find sainsburys very blooming expensive for a lot of stuff though, you really feel the food price increase, our shop was a good £40 more expensive than last year with comparable amount. Still need to get a few things too grr.

TenPercenter · 23/12/2012 01:50

Managed to not order any potato's

saladcreamwitheverything · 23/12/2012 01:55

It's ridiculous! The think that makes me laugh though is that everyone who moans how busy it is...is them that are there!!

Today i was chatting to someone whilst waiting in opticians...ME "are you ready for Christmas then?" THEM "yes, just about, it was bedlam in ASDA today though, it's ridiculous, they're only shut for a day", ME "yes, we've got all ours" THEM "yes, just need to nip tomorrow for the fresh stuff" FFS. Just remind me why it's bedlam in ASDA???!!! AND IT'S ALWAYS FOLK WHO'VE GOT ALL BLOODY WEEK Hmm

ddubsgirl · 23/12/2012 03:37

*works for asda think of my Xmas eve & boxing as I'm working Shock

saladcreamwitheverything · 23/12/2012 03:40
