To be annoyed that I think I've got flu?

Spookey80 · 21/12/2012 16:38

...anyone else feeling rubbish? I have so much to do,, I have no time for this.
Anyone else coming down with something or recovering?
How long is it likely to last? I feel achey, shivery, no appetite, no energy. Headache, chesty, bit of a cough.
Any advice, tips or just sympathy much appreciated.

Well, whether you have the dreadful cold virus that's knocking about or flu. You have my sincere sympathies.
I have woke,up this morning after a night of cramps and nausea with a headache and am coughing gunk up.
Not flu, but not nice :(

GobblersSparklyExplodingKnob · 22/12/2012 10:06

The cold virus doing the rounds atm is horrible, I have had it for over a week and it's still not gone.

shuffleballchange · 22/12/2012 11:09

Can't remember who asked but yes, I've had flu, my children have had flu. My one year old was ill for three weeks with it last year. My point was that there appear to be a lot of amateur doctors on this thread.

poozlepants · 22/12/2012 11:45

There is a horrible virus doing the rounds here- really nasty but only lasts 3 days. DH has it now and his parents are expecting us still to drive 2 hours to theirs in torrential rain and flooding for dinner. He has gone back to bed so I think we won't be going - there is always an upside to everything.

QueenStromba · 22/12/2012 11:53

For all of the people saying that that unless you physically can't get out of bed you don't have the flu - just how rare do you think flu is? Most cases of flu do not make you that ill. Flu is constantly mutating to produce new strains so each strain will have many other strains that are similar to it. If you've been infected with one strain then you will likely be resistant to many strains and get a mild case of the flu if you are infected with one of them. You only get a severe case of the flu if you haven't been exposed to anything like it before or if you are immunocompromised in some way.

Yes it's bloody annoying when people say the have the flu when they've got a mild case of the sniffles but I find it just as annoying when people say that you can't possibly have the flu unless you actually think you are about to die.

loflo · 22/12/2012 12:34

Can I join you all? Started with sniffles on Monday, shivery, bad headaches, completely exhausted, achy muscles, coughing, sniffing and no appetite at all. And I always have an appetite. I am back on bed today cos DH told menu looked like shite - cue more floods of tears (he was trying to be nice - poor bloke).

Any chance I might feel human by Monday?

ebersneezer · 22/12/2012 13:11

Agree QueenStromba

NHS direct don't paint it as necessarily being so dire

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 22/12/2012 13:22

I don't have flu, just a nasty cold. I am still ucked off about it, though

Spookey80 · 22/12/2012 13:24

Thankyou for all the sympathy and advice. But to be honest I don't rally care what it's called,,I just feel so rubbish. Everything hurts, aches and temp taking ages to come down, headache, snot, chesty, cough. Sinus blocked. Off food, restless, just bloody inconvienent when I have so much to do for Christmas.
....and that was the point I was making, not asking for an assessment of whether I have flu or not. But thanks for all he opinions.

Mia4 · 22/12/2012 13:52

It's shit being ill any time OP, and there's lots of viruses going around. My other half is currently laid up with the delightful norovirus-vomiting and the other all day, poor thing.

Get yourself some vit C with Zinc (pref dissolvable), echinachae, eat some garlic and hot food/bath to sweat it out. Difflam for a bad throat, beechams for virus.

Spookey80 · 22/12/2012 13:57

Yes, horrible taste too.

just woken up after three hours or so...feel no better at all! this is grim. Chest pains a bit worrying :(

flaggybannel · 22/12/2012 15:53

Another infected here
Started on thursday, cough, cant get warm, aching everywhere, headache, off my food.

Have been run down last few weeks with a tooth abcess from hell that was very painful and took strong antibiotics a week to clear up, so must be very run down at the moment.

Can anyone give me some hope i will be well for tuesday? Will be back in work tmorro wearing my thermals and a double uniform doped up on painkillers and lemsip, am so pleased my food shop is finished and sat in my cupboards.

SarahBumBarer · 22/12/2012 20:48

I have it too - whatever it may be.

:-/ at all the doctor google's on here.

Nhs says flu onsets quicker, often passes faster but you feel worse while you have it. so those of you bedridden for weeks probably just had colds! Grin only real way to tell is swab.

Either way, hope everyone is feeling better soon. DH is working C bristles day so very real chance of Christmas being postponed here :-(

SarahBumBarer · 22/12/2012 20:50

Oh yeah and the whole bedridden thing does not account for different strains/immune systems etc

SarahBumBarer · 22/12/2012 20:51

C bristles? Whaaaa?

BoneyBackJefferson · 22/12/2012 20:57

lljkk
Isn't that what men do about flu?

maybe if you stopped mothering him Wink

BehindLockNumberNine · 23/12/2012 13:20

Mine came on very quickly, developed a bit of a sore throat on Tuesday afternoon, by 6pm I was shivering, felt faint, sweating buckets and had to go to bed. Was pretty much unable to get out of bed for the next 3 days. Yesterday and today I have been dressed and sort of able to function but the slightest thing leaves me completely wiped out. I still struggle to breathe and have a cough so everything is a huge effort. Did Sainsbury this morning then came home and had to sit for half an hour with my eyes closed before I could tackle unpacking it....Urgh....

Lily15 · 23/12/2012 16:34

Can I join you? Avoided all winter bugs until yesterday afternoon.. Felt really tired and my glands had swollen. Today I'm bed ridden with aches, headache, chills. Felt nauseous half an hour ago and finished with projectile vomiting. Merry Bloody Christmas. Had a good cry this morning as I was supposed to be taking dd to London to see the nutcracker. Being ill sucks.

allthatglittersisnotgold · 23/12/2012 16:40

Just had confirmed flu! Fyi, went to my private gp, who did full assesment and blood tests. I was bed ridden for about 6 days. Fever for 5. Night sweats with weird dreams. Aching, cough (which is still here) no sore throat, no runny nose! Crying all the time all day. Which gave me a chronic headache- never had one like it! Am on road to recovery now but was very very bad and still get tired quickly. Also still have the blues which is common after a virus i've been told. Got given an antibiotic 3 day course (begins with a was an unsual one) tamiflu (which made me vomit) and ibuprofen. Keep drinking fluids like flat coke and lucozade!

Moiraine · 23/12/2012 17:40

Can I join in the commiserating? 21 weeks pg, still feeling + being sick (which i'm little fed up of now in any case), came down with some achey, chesty, snotty bug at work on thurs + had to come home sick. Been in bed pretty much ever since, coughing so hard it really hurts + struggling not to throw up each time.
Wish I could take lemsip or night nurse etc, am only taking paracetamol to keep my temp reasonable, but feel worried even doing that :(
