to make NatWest customers aware of this change...

Will make backstory as quick as possible.

Yesterday a natwest cashpoint swallowed my card. I rang up to order another, which was frustrating as it wouldn't arrive until after Christmas and I haven't started my shopping yet (I knooow!)

I went into my branch with my birth certificate, driving licence, a current household bill and my tenancy agreement. Manager refuses to give me more than twenty pissing quid, as my licence has my old address on it. He gave me a number to ring so I could get a special code to type into a cash point and get emergency funds of up to sixty pounds a day.

Man on end of phone says no - you can only request emergency funds from a cashpoint ONCE while waiting for a new card, max £60, and it MUST be done at the same time as you report your card lost!!!! GAAAAH!

Went back into bank and by some divine piece of good luck got served by someone reasonable and kind (ie not the manager who misinformed me the day before) and I was able to get £250 out with the same ID to last until my new card arrives (which I foresee being a whole new thread of its own!)

So, if you've waded through the blether, my advice is - BE EXTRA CAREFUL WITH YOUR CARD OVER CHRISTMAS AND IF YOU DO NEED TO REPORT IT MISSING, ENSURE YOU REQUEST A NUMBER FOR EMERGENCY FUNDS.

Do you have another account you could put the funds in to draw out?

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 21/12/2012 12:45

I would do as pp said and could have transferred the funds to my account with another bank and used that card instead

StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 12:45

Nope, I do all my banking with Natwest - probably an error!

OP posts:
StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 12:47

Do many people bank with multiple banks then?

OP posts:
Tabliope · 21/12/2012 12:48

I think it is an offence to not have your current address on your driving licence and it's often used fraudulently so you were probably lucky to get £20.

StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 12:49

You're probably right Tabliope and I have been here 5 months now so should have got it altered. Siiiiigh.

Indith · 21/12/2012 12:52

It isn't really unreasonable of Natwest that you have failed to update your ID though is it? Would you rather they leave themselves open to fraud and give all your money to the wrong person?

Tabliope · 21/12/2012 12:54

What a pain just before Christmas though. It's a great excuse to cut back on what you buy people Smile

EastHollyDaleStreet · 21/12/2012 12:54

don't people have chequebooks anymore??? to take cash out with?

wewereherefirst · 21/12/2012 12:55

I have three accounts with natwest, and when I lost a card years ago, they accessed the lost card account using another of my cards.

Can you do online banking transfers so you can access the cash in the meantime?

StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 12:56

Indith I'm not saying natwest were unreasonable. I am very pleased that I was able to at last get my money even though it was a frustrating experience. The point of the post was to advise people who (like me) might have previously thought that you could use the emergency cash service more than once while waiting for a new card.

Thought people might want to know, as £60 cash for a week to ten days won't go very far for many people.

StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 12:59

wewerehere I had plenty of funds in my account (for once) but couldn't get it out. My fault for having my previous address on my licence. It's just a weird situation to not physically be able to access your own cash.

EastHolly I don't think I've had a chequebook since I was about 20 - seeing as many places don't accept them any more I've never seen the need. Would have been helpful today though!

the T&C's says that you can access up to £300 if you are an online or phonebanking customer and £60 if you arent:

If your debit card is lost or stolen and find yourself short of money, we can provide you with emergency cash.

Just phone the bank report your card missing and get a six-digit code which you can use to access money from any RBS, NatWest or Ulster cash machine.

You can access up to £300 if you're an online or phone banking customer and up to £60 if you're not.

To use this service you must:

be a NatWest customer
have at least £25 available in your account
have enough money available to cover what you take out

Indith · 21/12/2012 13:00

No it isn't a lot of cash but it is only intended for a "fuck I lost my card I can't get to the bank until tomorrow". Then most people would manage to withdraw money at the counter no problem using the correct ID. It is an emergency cash service and not for use each and every time you need cash until your card arrives.

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 21/12/2012 13:01

p.s. chequebooks are rarely issued now and a lot of places no longer accept them as they are being phased out

StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 13:01

dishwasher does it also mention you can only do this ONCE and that it must be done at the same time as reporting card lost? That was the bit that I would have liked to have known.

OP posts:
littleducks · 21/12/2012 13:04

I think they had to tighten up the mergency cash machine code thingy after problems with fraud earlier in the year.

My bank wont issue more chequebooks, which is a PITA as school dont seem to realise this and always need money sent in.

MrsJREwing · 21/12/2012 13:04

Yes I have accounts with umbrella various places, some banks are under the same umbrella, different names same organisation.

Comes in handy if you loose a card or the banks IT systems are down. Halifax tranfers in an hour under faster payments.

Indith · 21/12/2012 13:05

On the cheque book thing- how do people pay school stuff without cheques? Or the coal man (though I realise now I've typed it that the coal man is not perhaps an issue for most people).

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 21/12/2012 13:05

it is emergency cash for when you cant get into a branch though and if you had been in with valid ID then you would have been able to withdraw however much you wanted.

It does say you get the code when you phone to report the card is lost/stolen and sounds to me like it would be a one off code.

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 21/12/2012 13:06

I pay school stuff with cash and have never given them a cheque. I cant actually remember the last time I wrote a cheque (have no coal man!)

QueenOfFarkingEverything · 21/12/2012 13:10

My bank have never needed to see more than one piece of ID (so long as it had an address on) and have in the past given me cash with no ID (I'd left my bag and cards at home, an hours bus ride away, and they took pity on me and asked me a zillion security questions first!).

I suspect you would have got more money with no problem had you not shown the driving license as the discrepancy will have set off some sort of be-careful-potential-fraud triggers with the manager,

StuffezLaBouche · 21/12/2012 13:15

queenof Can I ask what bank that is? I know I was at fault over the driving licence, but with birth certificate and current household bill I thought I'd be alright!

OP posts:
nickelbabylyinginamanger · 21/12/2012 13:17

and you can get a replacement driving licence free if it's for change of address - just get the photos done and send it off. (there's a form to fill in of course)

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 21/12/2012 13:22

you can change your address online as long as you have a current UK passport - I dont even think you need to do photos as they would have your current photo on file
