Will make backstory as quick as possible.

Yesterday a natwest cashpoint swallowed my card. I rang up to order another, which was frustrating as it wouldn't arrive until after Christmas and I haven't started my shopping yet (I knooow!)

I went into my branch with my birth certificate, driving licence, a current household bill and my tenancy agreement. Manager refuses to give me more than twenty pissing quid, as my licence has my old address on it. He gave me a number to ring so I could get a special code to type into a cash point and get emergency funds of up to sixty pounds a day.

Man on end of phone says no - you can only request emergency funds from a cashpoint ONCE while waiting for a new card, max £60, and it MUST be done at the same time as you report your card lost!!!! GAAAAH!

Went back into bank and by some divine piece of good luck got served by someone reasonable and kind (ie not the manager who misinformed me the day before) and I was able to get £250 out with the same ID to last until my new card arrives (which I foresee being a whole new thread of its own!)

So, if you've waded through the blether, my advice is - BE EXTRA CAREFUL WITH YOUR CARD OVER CHRISTMAS AND IF YOU DO NEED TO REPORT IT MISSING, ENSURE YOU REQUEST A NUMBER FOR EMERGENCY FUNDS.

Lloyds.

The only time they have ever (in 15 years!) asked for two pieces of ID was when I moved across the country and then they did ask for one photo ID and one with my address on, but they did say a correct driving license (which obv. has both) would have done, I just didn't drive at the time.

I don't go to school much, the good thing with cheques was the ability to put them in the book bag and it didnt matter if the kids lost them. I have to send in £100 to pay for afterschool club, cant give it to them when i actually pick up from the club as office (with safe) is locked by then and school has no facilities to pay by card or bank tranfer.

Why did the machine swallow your card?! If my card got swallowed I'd be in trouble, I only have one bank account! Do they randomly do that?!

I don't know why it did but when I get to work and told people what had happened, one colleague said, "Oh I NEVER use that one - it's notorious." Apparently it's happened to her husband twice and refuses to even accept her daughter's card. Which made me a little bit pissed off.
Other than this, I've never had my card swallowed.

How can banks get away with refusing to issue chequebooks? They are still used for a lot of things, small businesses and services around me are normally paid by cheque, as are club dues and things like that.

I know they are going to get rid, but they haven't even started proposing the alternatives for some channels yet.

From a Guiding perspective I like and dislike cheques. They are needed by us to be able to pay for things as we require 2 signatures for security but would much prefer parents to pay us by bank transfer to avoid having to keep going to the bank to pay in cheques.

I had this the other week.

I was sent to another town one evening to see a Dr, as maternity daycare here was full. Somehow I dropped or misplaced my card while i nthe hospital or car park, as I couldn't find it the next morning.

I rang Natwest actionline, to report it missing and ask for another. The person did NOT offer me a number to access emergency cash though I asked whether there was any way I could find out my old credit card PIN< as it was the only card I had.

Instead he put me through to credit card services, on the same call. They said they could only send a reminder out and this would take 3-4 working days.

I asked to be put back through to someone in debit cards, and was, without hanging up at all - I asked them about the emergency cash service, they checked the system, saw my card had already been reported missing (roughly 4 minutes prior to this, on the same call) and said no can do!

You have to requst the service AT THE SAME TIME as you report the card missing a nd because I'd been put through to another dept, and back again, it wasn't possible to override.

She apologised for the crapness of this. Anyway I took loads of ID to the branch, and thankfully yhey were willing to give me £100 to last till the next week. In fact my new card arrived within a couple of days, may even have been the next day, which was helpful. But they'd told me it could take up to a week.

So the OP is right - you do need to ask for the number at the same time as reporting the card lost. Immediately, not 4 minutes later. Or they can't help you. But your branch may be Ok to help out, if it's in opening hours obvs.
