You're right Maryz.
And I do report, and like you, I have a radar, where threads just don't ring true.
But the rools say report, which I do, I don't want to risk a ban on MN, because I love it here, but it seems to have happened to other posters who were a bit outspoken.
And because I like it here I'm very careful what I say these days.
Which IMO gives the trolls free range, because if you ever doubt, you will be deleted.
MN needs to look at their guidelines again in the NY.
Until then I'm dumbed down.
Our 'no trollhunting' rule is there for very good reason, LadyBeagleBaublesandBells.
First, those who cry troll are quite often wrong. We can tell you that quite categorically. And we can also tell you how horrible and hurtful it is for an OP who's finally plucked up the courage to ask for help with a tricky, sensitive issue to be met with endless "bugger off, you trucker" type posts.
Second, posting "troll" won't get the troll (if it is a troll) banned. We can only ban trolls if you let us know about them. MN is a post-moderated boards: at MNHQ, we can't possibly read every one of the 40,000 posts a day, so we rely on you folks to let us know when you think there is someone hairy-handed about. We are usually pretty quick to ban when a troll's been reported (and it is indeed a troll) and we always reply to reports to let you know what we're doing.
And finally, trollhunting actually slows us down in terms of catching and banning trolls. If we have to spend time deleting trollhunting posts, that cuts down time we could be spending delving about behind the scenes, finding out what the suspected troll's been up to - and banning if necessary.
So please do report, if ever you think you've spotted a troll. We'd really really appreciate it.
