To feel very smug about this Christmas bargain?!

I was looking around John Lewis the other day for gifts and say a SodaStream. I remembered my dp saying he had one as a kid and thought it would be a 'fun' gift as I've already got him grown up stuff.

Anyway, it was £149.99 and thought I would look about first before coming back.

Went to Currys and exactly the same one was.....£34.99!!

I'm think

When I was at the till, another lady came up with another box and said that it had been advertised at that price so it had to be sold under the "sale of Goods Act" so the manager had no choice.

No idea if that's right but it sounded good and the manager sold us the Lego so he must have been convinced too .

TheBuskersDog · 20/12/2012 22:52

Thanks, have just reserved one.

kid · 20/12/2012 22:56

When I worked in a shop (many years ago), the law was that you either sold it at the advertised price or removed it from sale for 24 hours. That was over 10 years ago though so could have changed since then.
Well done on your bargain finds though, its always great to get a good deal.

jennywren123 · 20/12/2012 23:10

I've ordered one too. Thank you !!!!!

MmmnoodlesoupIsDueXmasEve · 20/12/2012 23:15

Ooh glad to have helped! Xmas Smile

I read about tescos glitch selling a mountain bike for £1 but they wouldn't honour it, bastards!

Ooh poncyettia I think that woman did you a big favour, but the manager was an idiot to believe her! I think that the price on an item is an "invitation to treat" (legal speak) ie it is encouraging you to make an offer to the seller to buy at that price. The seller then has right to refuse to sell to you ie it is not a legally binding price.

Sorry, that is unspeakably dull and I'm going to take myself outside and have a word.

But well done!

poncyettia · 20/12/2012 23:23

I don't know anything re the legalities of selling anything but this lady sounded really convincing!

Glad she did though cos I was fully expecting to be told sorry thats priced wrong and you can't have it.........

All I know is I am going to have a very happy ds on Christmas morning Xmas Grin

foreverondiet · 20/12/2012 23:26

LikeAVirginMary yes you are right - under the sale of goods act, the price is an invitation to treat and the staff can decide when you get to the till if they want to sell you the item at that price or not - they can decide that no, they don't want to. I have taken stuff to the till before with bargain price on it and they have refused - after all whats to say that a member of the public didn't swap the stickers around.

makemineapinot · 20/12/2012 23:31

Thanks for link!! We will be sodastreaming on Xmas day Xmas Smile

minsmum · 20/12/2012 23:34

You lot are a bad influence. Ive just ordered one too

BigBugs · 20/12/2012 23:37

Thanks op! I had bought DH the cheaper genesis soda stream from Robert dyas (£59.99) which I am now returning tomorrow as I have just reserved the 'source' in black from currys!... Much appreciated Smile

wigglybeezer · 20/12/2012 23:40

Same as Bigbugs, only snag is that it is MIL who bought it and she will have to unwrap it and take it back to John Lewis, she was a wee bit worried about the robustness of the cheaper one so I'm sure she won't mind.

MarcelineTheVampireQueen · 20/12/2012 23:48

McCgristmas do you know if that 5pound shop delivers to Ireland? i cant see it on their site?

McChristmasPants2012 · 20/12/2012 23:49

I don't know

pigletpower · 21/12/2012 01:01

I once got a bag of 100 plastic balls, the coloured ball pit type ones for 35p at Tesco. The lady at the till ran it through again and it still came up at this mad price! Get in!

jennywren123 · 21/12/2012 13:20

OK, collected my Sodastream this morning and couldn't find the bottle (the one which you carbonate the water in) in the box. Assumed it was missing, so took it back to Currys. The sales assistant agreed it wasn't there and should have been, so we looked at the other two Sodastreams on the shelf and the bottle appeared to be missing from those too. Just agreeing with her that it must have been a faulty batch when I realised that there would be a space inside the machine where the gas cylinder would go (that was in the box). Took a look and sure enough, there it was!!! Xmas Blush. Anyway just got back now and enjoying my drink of Cherryade!

poncy
"Sorry guys - it was in our local department store about 3 weeks ago - member of staff had stuck a special offer sticker on it at £17.50 - manager was not a happy bunny but had to sell it to me! "

not true - they can refuse to sell you the item.
they don't have to sell it if it has been mispriced.

nickelbabylyinginamanger · 21/12/2012 15:49

ah, should have read all the posts.

Thank you very much Mmmnoodle, I picked up my Sodastream this afternoon and am just having my first home-made fizzy drink! It is great!

I have wanted one since I was a child, and I got £30 from a relative for Christmas, so I have spent it on this. I feel like I am 9 years old! Xmas Grin

MmmnoodlesoupIsDueXmasEve · 21/12/2012 17:23

Xmas Smile lovely! I've never used one before, can't wait to try it when DP opens it! I'm guessing you just put water and flavour in? Or could you put anything in like wine?

OP posts:
BiscuitNibbler · 21/12/2012 18:43

It says to just put water in and add the flavour afterwards. It came with 9 sample flavours, but I have just used normal squash in my drink and it is lovely.

I have heard rumours about wine, I might give it a go one day!

MmmnoodlesoupIsDueXmasEve · 21/12/2012 18:45

Just had a look on amazon and there's some lovely flavours, like blueberry and pomegranate :) wonder if there's any natural/additive free stuff to use
