to not always put 10 week old DS in a vest?

Aworryingtrend · 18/12/2012 20:34

DS is 10 weeks old and happy and healthy, no health considerations etc. I know the 'rule' is that baby should be wearing one more layer than me. Up to now I've always dressed him in a vest and then long sleeved baby gro or little trousers and top. But do I always have to put a vest underneath? Is there a reason babieshave to wear them? Could I for example put him in a baby gro and then a cardigan on top to make the two layers? I have lots of hand-knitted cardigans we got given when he was born and he's not getting to wear them at the moment.

TIA

what bizarre rule is this??? Confused

UKSky · 18/12/2012 20:36

No reason to have to wear a vest. My DD just wore babygros and cardigans.

sausagesandwich34 · 18/12/2012 20:37

vests keep nappies in place and don't ride up the back

I would have them in vest, sleepsuit and cardigan at this time of year

but it's your baby -there are no laws Grin

shuffleballchange · 18/12/2012 20:37

Mine always had vests, helps to contain exploding poo.

LemonBreeland · 18/12/2012 20:37

At this time of the year I would always have a baby in a vest. Particularly one that young.

Unless your house is very warm I should think he would definitely need at least two layers, possibly more. I'm not one to overdress babies but it is pretty chilly at the moment.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 18/12/2012 20:37

I used popper vests because often the clothing at the baby's back would ride up, but that might have been because both of mine were gurt fat babies with torsos like sausages

There is no have-to about it, do whatever suits you

AmberSocks · 18/12/2012 20:37

my ds is 10 weeks to and just wears babygrow in the house,i put a cardi and snowsuit and hat on outside.i always have heating on inside so its always warm.

Bingdweller · 18/12/2012 20:38

Vests are poo-catchers. YABU for that reason!

Katienana · 18/12/2012 20:38

I think vests make the nappy extra secure. I know what you mean though, mine is either indoors or in a snowsuit. Little jackets etc not being worn.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 18/12/2012 20:38

I put my babies in vests because they kept the nappies in place, not for warmth, so I didn't bother with them when they were wearing baby grows.

minibmw2010 · 18/12/2012 20:38

We still use vests and DS is 19 months old! Helps contain exploding poos and also I know he's cosy as I feel the cold and would hate to think he might. Will be upset when he's too big for them Smile

Sirzy · 18/12/2012 20:42

As long as he isn't to hot or to cold it doesn't matter what he is wearing.

However, I do agree that they are very useful for holding vests in place, its amazing how much they droop otherwise!

Fakebook · 18/12/2012 20:42

Vests keep the nappy in place. I couldn't imagine not putting one on DS. Dd used to wear them up until she was potty trained, age 3- even in the summer. Now she wears infant vests under Eveything. Isn't it good dressing etiquette to make children wear vests under clothes? I always thought it was.

Revelsarethebest · 18/12/2012 20:46

My 9 week old always has a vest on whether its under normal clothes or nightwear.

I think its just wrong for them not to have a vest on - but i cant give a reason for this Grin

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 18/12/2012 20:46

Another weird MN anomaly. I had never heard about this and DD has never worn a vest. Yet everyone but me knows about this?!?!?!

twizzlestix · 18/12/2012 20:48

My DD is 13wks and I ve been putting her in a long sleeved vest under her babygrows. I agree with 'poo catcher' usage as nappies do not seem to fit her very well round the thigh. As long as they feel a good temp if you put hand down back of neck, I think it's ok. I worry about her legs on having one layer instead :) can you tell she's a pfb :)

Loislane78 · 18/12/2012 20:48

bing vests should be rebranded to poop catchers Grin

twizzlestix · 18/12/2012 20:49

Oh and the back of the poppers on the babygrows might irritate their delicate skin.

SantaWearsGreen · 18/12/2012 20:51

Never heard of them being used to keep nappies in place Confused Maybe that's a disposable thing..

I used to put DC1 in one with babygrow over always, I don't know why- it was just habit. He lived in just a vest between 2 and 6 months anyway (we had some niiice weather in 2010..). DC2&3 only wear them under a dress or whatever but not just under a babygrow in the house. We have a warm house, don't need two layers.

MrsKeithRichards · 18/12/2012 20:51

Oh I'm cold imagining bare wee backs when a jumper rides up when you pick the baby up.

It is a law, yabu

SantaFlashesHisBoobsALot · 18/12/2012 20:52

Well... Little clothes ride up, and baby grows have gaps in between the poppers. Vests are also handy for stopping nappies from slipping / as damage control if there is a leaky nappy.

DS is three and still in vests this winter. Thought to be fair that's because he's quite diddy, and his 18-24 month ones still fit!

BarceyDussell · 18/12/2012 20:52

I still put vests on my 4 and 2yos (all potty trained) and i have no idea why! Obv not poppered vests

patchesmcp · 18/12/2012 20:55

I always use popper vests and DS is 22 months old. They keep the nappy in place and stop the waistband of trousers rubbing on the tummy.

However, your child, your rules so do whatever keeps you (and him) happy Xmas Smile

Bluefrogs · 18/12/2012 20:58

Vests just keep them warm,I always have mine in vests, cannot stand to think of their clothes riding up and having cold backs, tummies etc
My mum was the same with me when I was small and always remember being tucked in all the time!but it did keep me warm

ninani · 18/12/2012 21:03

It's very cold even with the heating on! 3 layers sounds much better.
