to not always put 10 week old DS in a vest?

Aworryingtrend · 18/12/2012 20:34

DS is 10 weeks old and happy and healthy, no health considerations etc. I know the 'rule' is that baby should be wearing one more layer than me. Up to now I've always dressed him in a vest and then long sleeved baby gro or little trousers and top. But do I always have to put a vest underneath? Is there a reason babieshave to wear them? Could I for example put him in a baby gro and then a cardigan on top to make the two layers? I have lots of hand-knitted cardigans we got given when he was born and he's not getting to wear them at the moment.

TIA

I would never go without a vest on either of my DC's its just not right. DD 17m wears popper vests and a babygrow to bed. I don't like the thought of a babygrow with no vest as the poppers would rub against her little belly.

DS 3.9 wears a vest always under his T-Shirt. to bed he wears a vest and long sleeve jammies. It has to be scoarching before mine lose their vests.

A pet hate of mine is children with nappies and trousers/skirts/shorts on with no vests. If they have a nappy the shoud have a popper vest.

Yanbu

Babies only need one extra layer for the first month, and even then if they are in arms all the time or in sling then they may not.

4dcs here and no real vest usage. Babies never chilly Smile

Even in summer?

Softlysoftly · 18/12/2012 21:18

Mrsterrys your DD never wears a vest? Xmas Shock

I'd quite like to still wear poppered bodysuits as I hate a cold back but think it might put DH off.

apostrophethesnowman · 18/12/2012 21:19

I think they need vests, particularly in the winter. As other's have said, they also keep their nappies in place. It's just so much cosier.

You don't want them getting cold kidneys! (This must be true, because my granny and mother said it Xmas Smile )

hippoherostandinghere · 18/12/2012 21:20

Yes even in summer unless its over about 25 degrees.

WinkyWinkola · 18/12/2012 21:21

I love a vest.

Lucie99 · 18/12/2012 21:21

Softly Softly I wear the M&S long sleeved poppered body for precisely that reason couldn't give a flying fig what DH thinks . Perfect for layering & always have a toasty back Smile

apostrophethesnowman · 18/12/2012 21:22

softlysoftly we used to have adult poppered bodysuits years ago. They were very fashionable actually! They were worn as outerwear though. I think that was in the eighties.

I have to say they were a bugger to do up, especially in confined places like a public loo.

PopMusicShoobyDoobyDoA · 18/12/2012 21:22

I am firmly in the wearing bodysuits/vests camp. DS always wears vests, even in the summer. In a hot summer, it's all he wore! Keeps poop in and makes them cosy when rest of clothes ride up and poppers on sleep suits ,must feel uncomfortable.

hippoherostandinghere · 18/12/2012 21:23

Yes pop I would rather them just wear a vest in summer than wear clothes with no vest.

Don't they call them baggies now?

VisualiseAHorse · 18/12/2012 21:24

Mine always wears a vest. Short-sleeve one under a babygro during the day, but he might wear a long-sleeve one with dungarees, and then a knit on top.
Plus, we live in Scotland, so it can get pretty cold.

ChristmasKnackers · 18/12/2012 21:28

OMG there's a vest rule!?

My 14 week old lives in onsies. The house is warm though and obviously I dress him up when outside. If its below 18 in the house at night, I will put him in a vest then.

apostrophethesnowman · 18/12/2012 21:28

popmusicshoobydoonydoa I haven't heard of baggies, but perhaps they do!

Bodysuits were skin tight though, rather than baggy. Confused

Aworryingtrend · 18/12/2012 21:30

Thank you all. Good point about the gap between the poppers on the baby gro and also the poppers potentially irritating skin, so will definitely stick with the vests. Maybe I'll just turn the heating down so he can wear the cardigans as well!

my baby always wore a little vest under her grobags. and her tiny pink tummy was as pretty as can be. 1982. xxx to baby's tummy!

i'd go for the vest option. but its your choice - you're the mum so you get to decide!

Doh! Baggies are sleep suits for adults I think. Yes, I remember the bodysuits with poppers. Bloody nightmare when trying to do them up in a dark cramped toilet when falling over drunk. Not my idea of fun. It took me ten minutes to pop the poppers back in the one time.

Glitterspy · 18/12/2012 21:46

Inexperienced first timer here - I'm due in Feb and live in a drafty old flat, so am worried about baby getting cold!

When you say 'vest', you mean anything with poppers between the legs, right?

PopMusicShoobyDoobyDoA · 18/12/2012 21:48

Yup

PopMusicShoobyDoobyDoA · 18/12/2012 21:48

Also called bodysuits

Startail · 18/12/2012 21:50

The rule is DD1, from birth, wears one layer less than me.

Jan baby and always too warm, I put in a best she grizzled, I put her in a snow suit she screamed!

She's 14 and floating about in a vest top with shoestring straps.

I'm wearing a long sleeved Tshirt with a short sleeved tunic over the top!

shellshock7 · 18/12/2012 21:53

hippo my DS was born in March and has only been wearing a vest for the last few weeks, he wore baby grows for abt 3 months then t-shirt and vests.

He is the hottest person I have ever met and gets so upset if he is too hot, a vest would have been a nightmare for him until it got properly cold Smile

shellshock7 · 18/12/2012 21:54

star sounds like my DS, I so want to see him in all cute in a snowsuit but i know he would scream!

VisualiseAHorse · 18/12/2012 21:55

Or called 'onesies' in the States.
