AIBU to worry about my 2 month old baby sleeping through the night?

I am getting worried about my EBF DS sleeping through the night. He is 10 weeks now and he has been sleeping for 5 hours during the night for two weeks but now it has been two nights since he sleeps for 7 to 8 hours... goes to bed at midnight and wakes up at about 8am.

I am aware that sleeping through the night is like the holy grail for some, but I was expecting to be sleep deprived for at least 6 months and not worrying about him sleeping 'too much'
If it makes any difference, his weight and lenght are 12 lbs 5oz/ 5.600 kg and 63cm lenght / about 2 foot I think.

Mine went through a small phase of sleeping through the night like that (at which I was also slightly concerned). It didn't last long though. Wink

I'd enjoy it!

Thank you for your reply, I will enjoy it Smile
I was actually thinking of waking him up during the night to feed him Blush

YANBU - you are being smug!! How many parents will read this and be green with envy Smile.

In all seriousness, my EBF DD2 started sleeping from 8pm-7am at 9 weeks and I was totally Shock (especially after DD1 who was a hellcat at night for months )

Keep an eye on his weight gain and try topping him up in the daytime if you get worried (but check with health professional first, of course Wink )

Ifyoulike · 18/12/2012 16:38

It worried me too. I kept getting up and hovering to make sure he was breathing, not too cold/not too warm, etc. Smile

Then came several months of waking up 3x a night. I couldn't help but feel I'd wished it upon myself, heh!

Enjoy it :). Both my DDs started sleeping through 10 till 6 at 8 weeks, was bliss! They are now 6 and 3 and can regularly be found migrating to our bed at night, also need to check DD1s blood sugar at around 2am. I got more sleep when they were little :(.

So long as he is feeding regularly during the day, is pooing and weeing fine, and thriving, then you need to do nothing other than enjoy it.

If he is not feeding well during the day, and does not seem content then I would speak to your hv.

SarahWarahWoo · 18/12/2012 16:54

My LO is eight weeks and sleeps between 5-8 hours at night, I love it and hope, pray and beg that it continues, she is healthy and I get to enjoy her more for being rested.

I havent spoke about it as I am scared to jinx it and also don't want to upset friend and relatives whims LO's dint sleep so well!

SarahWarahWoo · 18/12/2012 16:55

Sorry for the typo's. Autocorrect on iPad annoying and I am feeding LO currently.....

enjoy it - it probably won't last! My DS was sleeping 8/9 hours at about 10/12 weeks - then at 4 months he started waking constantly through the night - from the other babies I know that seems a very normal pattern - 4 month sleep regression - or 6 months or whatever - I think it's common to start sleeping through briefly then stop...

hope it lasts for you ...- but don't wake him! at 10 weeks they are fine to sleep like that - I am certain you will have many sleepless nights to come - as others said, I wish I had relaxed more when my ds slept through! I didnt make the most of it....

Tigresswoods · 18/12/2012 17:14

Enjoy. EBF DS started doing that from 7/8w much to the confusion & disgust of my NCT crowd. He was enormous & a milk monster by day but my nights were peaceful.

Be warned, it may not last.....

YoSaffBridge · 18/12/2012 17:16

Just enjoy it! Some babies get the hang of sleeping deeply quicker than others. DD slept well from a very young age and hasn't really relapsed yet. Some babies are just sleepers!

MrsFlibble · 18/12/2012 17:17

My daughter went through the night from 3 weeks old, about 7 hours i got now, she wakes me up to get in my bed, cheeky git.

DozyDuck · 18/12/2012 17:19

Enjoy!!! DS slept through at that age. Doesn't sleep at all now Grin

seoladair · 18/12/2012 17:23

My little girl slept for 6-hour stretches from her very first night. There have been odd nights here and there when she hasn't slept well (mainly when she's teething) but in general, 19 months later she's still a great sleeper.
Some babies sleep well from the beginning - I know quite a few people whose babies have been good sleepers. You just tend not to hear about the good sleepers so much!

sarahtigh · 18/12/2012 17:25

my DD started sleeping 7 hours at about that age too and she was much smaller and was sleeping 8-7 by 4 months, she has slept through apart from when ill since, except a small wobble at age 2.7 when got temporarily scared of dark and shadows and started coming to my bed which was fine, but now that's seems over, he may start waking again on the other hand he might well continue to sleep all night , if he is continuing to grow and put on weight in proportion it is absolutely fine;

unless a child is premature or ill or failing to thrive, I personally do not believe in waking sleeping babies at night, however if my child had slept all day and not at night, I would have woken her or tried to keep awake during day so she slept at night

I did learn not to mention it often though as some other mothers are not pleased to hear your baby sleeps all night every night

SantaWearsGreen · 18/12/2012 18:14

My DC3 slept for AGES at night for the first 3 months and i'm talking 8 hours a night, she is also ebf. I read online that I apparently should wake her for a feed because she was too young to sleep that long. She was gaining weight at a steady pace and wasn't ill. The whole idea of bfing ON DEMAND is that you do it when they want it, not to wake them so they feed at set times so I just left her too it. I thought I'd just got lucky.. Past three weeks she has been awake every hour- I am shattered. So I say make the most of it, it might not last!!

My DC2 did sleep through from 2 months though.

Illustrated · 18/12/2012 18:22

My almost 5 month old has always slept through. I used to wake her to feed but have just left her to it since 2 months.
Do you find he doesn't nap for long in the day? My dd feeds every 1-2 hours and doesn't nap much.

susanann · 18/12/2012 18:27

My DD did the same. If he is hungry he will let you know! If your son is happy healthy and gaining weight I would go with the flow. Enjoy!

MrsKeithRichards · 18/12/2012 18:28

Both mine only ever woke up once and went right through from 8 weeks (10 hours to start) just relax, enjoy and don't worry!

peaceandlovebunny · 18/12/2012 18:30

it may not last!
if his skin tone is good, he's alert and healthy, i'd just get some sleep. actually, no, i'd put the baby to the breast in his sleep every couple of hours but i'm not saying you ought to.
certainly if you thought he wasn't thriving as much as usual, you'd step up the feeds. but for now....zzzz zzzzz zzzz

Kayano · 18/12/2012 18:51

Mine slept through from 8 weeks and she still does now at 10 months. She always drank (quite conveniently) the exact oz of milk that the aptimil tub recommended and was healthy and happy so I was never concerned about it

GailTheGoldfish · 18/12/2012 18:53

Stealth boast! Wink

foreverondiet · 18/12/2012 18:54

Enjoy it while it lasts, all mine EBF slept through at ranging between 8-12 weeks but by 20 weeks all waking in night starving, until I introduced solids. Do not worry or feel any need to wake him!

BertieBotts · 18/12/2012 18:57

I think this is quite common. Almost always comes undone at the 4 month sleep regression!

I co slept and DS slept 11-7 from 7 weeks until 4 months.
