I've just come across this on Facebook.
RapeX anti-rape device

Never ever heard of it in my life until now, but apparently it's been around for a few years. In a nutshell, it's an anti-rape device for women called Rapaxe. It's like a condom that women insert in their vagina. Inside the condom there are tooth-like picks that act as a Venus flytrap for a penis. When the penis goes in, the teeth embed themselves to it and they can only be removed surgically. random news article about it from 2007.

I've searched around a bit and have come across this article that claims the product has never gone into production or been sold.

My initial feelings about this product were positive. But thinking about it, isn't it more dangerous? Angry men could turn to murder in a fit of rage. I don't know. On one hand I think it's the perfect quick revenge for an attack but then again, not.

And angry women could do it to an unsuspecting and innocent man too... so yes, very bloody dangerous.

Fakebook · 17/12/2012 21:55

Yes that too squeaky. Forgot to write that in OP.

Squeaky beat me to it.

Not a good idea all round.

PinkWinePixie · 17/12/2012 21:55

I'd imagine it would end up causing more injuries/deaths if women used this with angry men retaliating.

Newshoesplease · 17/12/2012 21:56

It's a hoax though, isn't it? It would have to be worn all the time- you can't predict a rape.

McChristmasPants2012 · 17/12/2012 21:56

The women would still get raped, however the man would get caught.

or it could be used for revenge.

BOFingSanta · 17/12/2012 21:56

There have been a few threads about this in the past, if you use search. I think the consensus was that it looked like an awful idea, and was a terrible indictment of the world we live in that it was ever considered necessary. Given that it wasn't put into mass production though, I think it's a bit of a non-issue.

Valpolliandtheivy · 17/12/2012 21:57

I think this has been in development for a good few years now (2005 or so? Could be wrong) But nothing has happened as yet in terms of production.

plantsitter · 17/12/2012 21:57

But you would still have been raped, wouldn't you? Just raped and exposed yourself to a criminal conviction yourself, as well.

Fakebook · 17/12/2012 21:57

I don't know if its a hoax. I thought that too.

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 17/12/2012 21:59

I could see it massively backfiring onto an innocent woman too who gets raped and ends up on an assault charge.

No way would this device ever work. Legalising pepper spray would be more effective in my opinion. Even if only sold on licence via womens aid / dv units and every can registered.

AnyaKnowIt · 17/12/2012 22:03

But its not anti-rape is it? The woman would still have to be raped for it to work

ErikNorseman · 17/12/2012 22:04

So women are expected to walk around 24/7 with sharp thingies wedged up their fanjos? Yeah, that will work.

soontobeburns · 17/12/2012 22:05

Plus it would make men just rape anally instead.

Fakebook · 17/12/2012 22:05

But why would the woman be charged with assault? It's her body and she can do what she likes with it. It would be the man's fault for violating her. Its also a bit like a chastity belt isn't it? A new age version.

OP posts:
hiviolet · 17/12/2012 22:07

It's not quite a hoax, but a prototype/conceptual thing that never went into production. It's on Snopes.com

FeckOffCup · 17/12/2012 22:35

If it was real I can't see it being effective for very long, surely once it becomes commonly used rapists will quickly learn to check if a woman if wearing one before raping her and remove it if she is? It relies on the element of surprise which won't be there anymore.

MrsKeithRichards · 17/12/2012 22:37

It's ridiculous

Lottikins · 17/12/2012 22:49

Firstly It would not prove rape , it would just prove that sex had taken place.
Secondly if rape can't be proven, the woman could quite likely face an assault charge.
Thirdly women could use it against men they didn't like.
Fourthly couldn't a rapist check for it's presence first

catgirl1976geesealaying · 17/12/2012 22:50

It's a hoax

And a fairly insulting one somehow

hiviolet · 17/12/2012 23:17

ladyfirenze · 17/12/2012 23:24

it was invented by a woman who was treating rape victims in africa, where the problem is endemic and terrifying.

PumpkinPositive · 17/12/2012 23:33

For that to work he would have already have to have penetrated the victim. Imagine he uses his fingers or an object to penetrate you and that thing goes off on it. I think the rapist would probably proceed to beat the victim to death. I'd rather not risk it.

CuttedUpPear · 17/12/2012 23:35

As ladyfirenze says it was invented to deal with the problem of rape in Africa. It would be nice to think that the knowledge of the existence of this device would be enough to deter rapists.

fenix · 18/12/2012 01:23

The idea has many flaws - anal rape, penetration with another object first. I hate the idea that similar products are even necessary. Or that it could be seen as the onus being on the woman to punish the rapist, rather than on men to, you know, not go around assaulting women.
