in expecting my dc to eat brussle sprouts

pingu2209 · 17/12/2012 19:33

I made up a fantastic (imo) bubble and squeek, but added yesterday's brussle sprouts. They refused to eat any of it.

I am not a restaurant, I only cook once, they eat it or go hungary.

My kids eat. ALOT. Most things.
But you can't make thenm eat something they don't like.

Dh doesn't like tuna and anchovies.
I don't like frankfurters, olives.
Ds1 doesn't like mushrooms, or salad.
Ds2 doesn't like mango, or something else I can't remember.
None of us like brussels.

RubyGates · 18/12/2012 08:19

Ah yes, all the meals my mother ruined by trying to hide sprouts in them.

I hate them, she knew I hated them, they made me physically sick if I tasted them, and yet she still continued to put them on my plate.

Thre are hundreds of other vegetables. Bubble and squeak is one of my favourite things ever, and yet had she squirreled away those sprouts in it I would have been able to detect them before the first fork-full reached my mouth.

And yet my mother still tries to make me eat them. WHY? I assume it's some kind of power and control thing. I never understood why she kept on buying them when there were only the two of us in the household.

valiumredhead · 18/12/2012 08:28

I love sprouts but hated them when I was younger, they are very strong flavoured.

I wouldn't waste my time making a meal I knew the family wouldn't like and then declare I wasn't a restaurant so YABU.

JakeBullet · 18/12/2012 08:30

My DS utterly loves them.....don't know where he got it from as I used to hate them. I remember them as better whereas now they taste sweet to me. I guess it's in the age and cooking of them.

valiumredhead · 18/12/2012 08:31

They are SO good for you, if you like them it's great!

valiumredhead · 18/12/2012 08:32

I prefer frozen sprouts to fresh ones.

CaHoHoHootz · 18/12/2012 08:36

My DM Brussels sprouts = disgusting ugggghhhh yuk yuk, soggy, squelchy.

My DMIL Brussel sprouts = yum yum delicious, can I have some more please

Groovee · 18/12/2012 08:38

Brussel Sprouts are the devils work but dh and ds love them. But I don't force myself or dd to eat them x

MrsHoarder · 18/12/2012 08:38

YABU to hide something strongly flavoured that they don't like in a mixed-up dish so they couldn't easily avoid it. Hidden veg only works if it can't be tasted.

Theas18 · 18/12/2012 08:41

Dolly cabbages are the best!

pingpongmerrilyonhigh · 18/12/2012 09:09

I love vegetables but loathe sprouts. They stink taste horrible and I cant see how you can disguise them in anything.

As a child I hated cabbage but now as an adult can eat it, especially since discovering it doesn't need to be boiled to mush, a quick zap with fresh grated ginger is sublime.
But I have tried sprouts, prepared different ways, and just cant bring myself to like them.

KellyEllyChristmasBelly · 18/12/2012 09:14

Bit harsh to banish them across Europe but if they won't eat their greens. Hahahahahaha Xmas Grin

ArbitraryUsername · 18/12/2012 09:29

I used to like sprouts as a child, but now I'm not so keen. I'd eat them if someone served them to me, but they do taste bitter.

And overlooked sprouts are beyond vile (I think we can all agree on that). My granny used to put her sprouts on to boil at the same time as she put the potatoes in the oven for Christmas dinner. The result was truly hideous and the smell . Her sprouts were a family joke, but that didn't stop her doing them that way.

She was not a good cook in general. It was all runny mince (or tinned ham) and plain, boiled floury potatoes at her house. Eurgh. The thought of those potatoes still makes me feel a bit sick.

PickledInAPearTree · 18/12/2012 09:50

Dirty evil baby cabbages.

EnjoyResponsibly · 18/12/2012 09:51

I hate them. I have always hated them. I also hate bananas. I can detect either in any food.

If anyone tried to make me eat sprouts or bananas I would go to bed in Hungary quite happily.

Xmas Grin
MaryChristmaZEverybody · 18/12/2012 09:57

The only thing worse than brussels sprouts is yesterday's brussels sprouts reheated.

Your poor children Xmas Sad

MERLYPUSS · 18/12/2012 12:03

When I cook Christmas dinner it's the law that everyone eats one sprout at least. Even if it's covered in mustard they have to eat it. If I've cooked and slaved and shopped and planned they will eat a freaking sprout. My kids like them anyway but it is my evil pleasure watching my BIL turn his nose up.

Narked · 18/12/2012 12:10

AMillionYears is right. There's a big difference between generally fussy eating or refusing food they eat sometimes because they'd rather have something else and not eating something they truly dislike.

I love vegetables. There are two I don't eat. Out of every veg on the planet, I can't stand two. That's not so bad is it? One of them is sprouts Grin

flowerytaleofNewYork · 18/12/2012 12:12

Hang on a minute, hold the phone.

Forget about the sprouts, you had leftover roast potatoes?! Xmas ShockXmas ShockXmas Grin

AmberLeaf · 18/12/2012 12:18

bubble and squeak is what people ate during rationing so they didn't starve. So you are b vvvu to serve it up in 2012

Bubble definitely pre dates WW2

I love sprouts, but they made me heave as a child.

They do however make toxic bum burps.

RyleDup · 18/12/2012 12:22

I love brussel sprouts, one dc does, one doesn't, dh hates them. I'd never serve them up to someone who hates them, they make my dh physically sick. If you knew that your dc hated them then thats pretty mean of you.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 18/12/2012 12:38

DD hates peas, radishes and celery. Like me, she can detect celery in any sauce or stock instantly and refuses to eat any dish made using that stock.

DS1 eats EVERYTHING except rhubarb and fresh tomatoes.

DS2 hates 99% of fruit except apples, bananas and oranges, but will happily eat any vegetable and any dish as long as it has no spice - his tastes are very, um, beige! (ASD)

DS3 has tons of allergies and lives off fruit, veg, rice potatoes and pasta. The only thing he doesn't really like is pork.

I couldn't make any of them eat one of the few things they turn their nose up at, but as it's so few things each, I don't mind, I just meal plan around it!

Muminwestlondon · 18/12/2012 12:41

I loathed sprouts as a child, they make me physically sick. I think children have a much more sensitive sense of taste and smell, so I have every sympathy.

I still dislike them and make DH cook them himself if he wants them at Xmas.

PickledInAPearTree · 18/12/2012 12:43

Bubble & Squeak is lush.

No when the devil food is in it though.

peeriebear · 18/12/2012 12:44

They taste like farts dipped in earwax. However I will tolerate them buried in Bubble and squeak. DD1 has inherited my utter disdain for them and I never make her eat them.
