in expecting my dc to eat brussle sprouts

I made up a fantastic (imo) bubble and squeek, but added yesterday's brussle sprouts. They refused to eat any of it.

I am not a restaurant, I only cook once, they eat it or go hungary.

Brussels you come to love with age
Also cheese, decent wine and olives, IMHO.

corinthian · 17/12/2012 20:20

As mentioned just now, there's a gene that is fairly common I believe that if you have it means that sprouts taste absolutely vile.

I think with new foods or food you know your kids have disliked in the past, it's not at all unreasonable to serve them, but it is unreasonable to serve them as an all-pervading part of the meal, especially with foods that may not be easily likeable. I'd certainly go hungry rather than eat sprouts! Even with new tastes generally, you usually have to try them about a dozen times before you like them so it's a bit unfair to make children starve while they go through that process.

KellyEllyChristmasBelly · 17/12/2012 20:43

You are yes considering most kids don't like them. I hated them as a child and never understood why adults were always trying to force them on me in December when they knew how much I hated them. Resulted me me actually puking up a meal once. I love them now though!

aaaaagh · 17/12/2012 21:04

Sprouts make DH fart really badly, so his intake is strictly limited. Made a veggy slop thing that contained sprout tops and a few baby sprouts snuck in. I spotted one on DH's plate and said 'Oh no! Daddy's got a sprout!' DS (aged 5) yelled 'Look out! He's gonna blow!' Xmas Grin

pingu2209 · 17/12/2012 21:05

Well I cooked up a fantastic bubble and squeek with chopped up bacon and reminants of a cooked ham, threw in yesterday's roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips and onions, plus a few boiled peas, sweetcorn and broad beans - there were about 20 brussle sprouts in total and I cut them into quarters. They smothered the bubble and squeek in ketchup but still hardly touched it. They are in bed, hungary.

That's interesting about the gene as people do either love them or hate them. Wonder if marmite has it in too?

BernieTheBolt · 17/12/2012 21:11

DD1 aged 3.5 brussel sprouts 'fairy cabbages' therefore eats them quite happily. I find the smaller the brussel sprout the better as they taste nicer

Violetroses · 17/12/2012 21:19

YABU! Brussels sprouts are one of those things you inherit a taste for. It's a genetics thing - some people inherit the ability to detect the bitter flavour in sprouts and some don't.

Looks like your DCs might take after their dad?

ArbitraryUsername · 17/12/2012 21:22

One year all DS1 ate for Christmas dinner was sprouts. He was a toddler and he refused the sausages, stuffing, turkey, everything else and tucked into the sprouts. It was hilarious. I'd never get him to eat them now. Not that I'll bother trying. Everyone but me hates sprouts so I'm not cooking them.

Ghostsgowoooh · 17/12/2012 22:30

Yabvvu, sprouts are vile. I eat any veg except sprouts. My mum used to make me eat them and they used to make me heave.

Kytti · 17/12/2012 22:32

My dd1 said "Christmas?! We get to eat SPROUTS! YAAAAAAAAY!"

lol Xmas Smile

ElenorRigby · 17/12/2012 22:35

YABVU!

I told the kids long ago that Sprouts are EVIL and they would NEVER EVER be made to eat them.

Fakebook · 17/12/2012 22:36

I love Brussel Sprouts. Fried in a knob of butter with onions and garlic. Yum yum.

CatchingMockingbirds · 17/12/2012 22:47

Yabu, yuck!

Oh god I want a big steaming bowl of sprouts now. I could happily live on them. I also stock up on frozen ones and eat them all year round. IMO it's not even a Sunday Roast without.
salivates (just imagine Homer Simpson lol)

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug · 17/12/2012 23:08

YANBU. Sprouts are the loveliest veg. I insist mine eat them, I figure if they really didn't like them they'd totally refuse to even touch them. DS2 and DS5 love them, so I'm getting there.

bubble and squeak is what people ate during rationing so they didn't starve. So you are b vvvu to serve it up in 2012.

MildredIsMyAlterEgo · 17/12/2012 23:23

That's not bubble, that's Sunday Lunch in a pan Grin I could wolf that down right now

They are in bed, hungary Bit harsh to banish them across Europe but if they won't eat their greens... Smile Joking aside, quite right they should go to bed with rumbly tummies for missing out on that smorgasbord.

simplesusan · 17/12/2012 23:39

YABU.
Fresh sprouts are awful, old ones taste like devils spew.

Yuck! I'm glad you don't do my cooking, sorry.

redexpat · 18/12/2012 07:06

YABU. Sprouts are disgusting.

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 18/12/2012 07:26

Yes, yes YABU. They are the devil's bogeys, and you can dress them up in any way you want, as bubble and squeak, or with bacon, or anything, but they will still be sprouts and therefore disgusting and boakworthy!

CouthyMowEatingBraiiiiinz · 18/12/2012 07:27

Annoyingly, all my DC's seem to live the vile green things. I think my attempts to get them to eat things even I don't like went a little too well.

4 DC's, and they all love sprouts. Weirdo's.

exoticfruits · 18/12/2012 07:44

I think that brussel sprouts are an exception. I love them now but hated them as a child and was made to eat a couple if they were served and used to hold my nose to do it! Therefore I couldn't have eaten your bubble and squeak.
I am all for disguise for DCs and used to do it all the time but you have to be very careful about the strong flavours e.g. I used to put parsnip into soup but only a little or it took over the flavour.
My mother's worst was tapioca pudding which we refused to eat- she coloured it pink and served it cold the next day- we were not fooled and refused to touch it.
The moral of the story is - don't serve up something that you know they hate without there being something on the plate that they can eat.
