To think that I should be able to eat sugary foods or drink a glass of wine without thrush coming back.

This thrush is really taking the edge off my festive mood. Every time I eat something sweet or drink more than a thimble of wine it comes back again. Doctor says use pessaries and cream but do people think the oral capsule works better? Anyone got any other useful tips? This is really pissing me off now!

Tea tree pessaries and a mega dose of gut flora from a reputable homeopathic store, coupled with a week off sugar. That'll nail it.

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 17/12/2012 13:05

I have a 'cooking without' book and the previous owner clearly had this problem judging by the notes. Candida or something?

Do you have to forever avoid booze and cake? What a ball ache.

Festivelyfedup · 17/12/2012 13:08

I bought some caprylic acid from Holland and Barrett but I'm a bit scared to try it!

WeWilsonAMerryChristmas · 17/12/2012 13:12

What's caprylic acid? that sounds a bit scary Grin

try this

But I would go into a proper herbalist rather than H&B for advice

monkeyfacegrace · 17/12/2012 13:16
Shock

Wine causes thrush??!

And sugar??!

Fuck, that'll be why I suffer every month then....

littleladyindoors · 17/12/2012 13:17

oh been there I have all the sympathy in the world for you- mine was because of the pill though but sugar made it worse. Still I got fed up with paying so much for the cream so took the tablet and it works really well IME. You can also get the generic version rather than paying Canesten any more money!!

valiumredhead · 17/12/2012 13:19

You need acidpholous powder - works like those expensive yoghurt drinks but tons cheaper and a jar will last you months and months.

DozyDuck · 17/12/2012 13:19

What really? [shocked] that's the reason then!!!

Still not giving up wine though Xmas Grin

bluecarrot · 17/12/2012 13:21

I had candida - 6 months on reduced sugar and yeast diet (was supposed to exclude but it was too hard!) plus taking these cured it - mostly!

Also eat unsweetened natural yogurt and if desperate, soak a tampon in some and um...use it. it will feel weird but it helps shift the thrush.

KindleMum · 17/12/2012 13:25

agree with valiumredhead, I'd go with acidophilus tablets/capsules powder and take them as a maintenance measure for some time til you figure you're really clear of it.

Festivelyfedup · 17/12/2012 13:28

Thanks everyone - nice to have some sympathy. DH just says, you've still got it in an incredulous way! Caprylic acid is in coconut oil and is supposed to help but I have heard that it can cause anxiety and I have that all on my own already!

Festivelyfedup · 17/12/2012 13:29

Would people agree that thrush can be hard to get rid of or have I been unlucky? Never had it before but it's a bitch!

OP posts:
KindleMum · 17/12/2012 13:33

I think it's one of those things that is particularly hard to get rid of if you're a bit run down and at the moment with christmas, forthcoming school hols and the many bugs doing the rounds, it's quite likely you're stressed and run-down?

Are you careful what you wash with? I'd be very cautious til you're clear of it - stick with very gentle soaps etc til then, beware of bubble bath etc. Things you're normally fine with might not be ok just at the moment.

littleladyindoors · 17/12/2012 13:37

Thrush really can be a git to get rid of. It is one of the most awful things, i hate it, I am touching wood right now that I dont get it. I am def not going back on the pill, and literally since I stopped taking that It has gone and not come back (Hooray cos Im 29wks pregnant) I used the yoghurt drinks too and that did help a bit, but of course they are full of sugar and that doesnt help!!!
arent DHs lovely as well? Mine did however also take a tablet on the drs advice just in case.

HoFlippinHo · 17/12/2012 13:39

DH needs to be treated as well. There's no point treating yourself if he doesn't get treated too. He may not have any symptoms but he's probably reinfecting you.

Idocrazythings · 17/12/2012 13:41

I had a shocking case for a whole month, I ended up getting a 7day supply of the oral tablets (fluconazole) prescribed by the GP which cleared it up. I also take zinc which is good for tissue healing and health. Also DH had to use the cream too or he was never allowed near me again?

dotty2 · 17/12/2012 13:44

I sympathise. I used to have thrush every month - would go away with my period. I have been low-carbing and been v. good about sugar for most of this year and it went away completely. No bother. Have fallen off the wagon with Christmas, eaten a shedload of chocolate etc and - bingo - here it is again.

Festivelyfedup · 17/12/2012 13:47

People who took the oral capsule - did you have any side effects? The NHS website makes it sound like it can kill you in an instant! I think I should have just gone with my instinct and used it first time rather than faff about with pessaries falling out etc.

OP posts:
Idocrazythings · 17/12/2012 14:54

Can't write at the moment but I'll post later about the tablet if u like

BartletForTeamGB · 17/12/2012 14:59

I've used the tablet before and that got rid of it nicely.

Is DH using the canestan as well? Sometimes couples can transfer it back and forth so it can never be properly cleared.

Idocrazythings · 17/12/2012 21:52

I had to take the tablet a few times (under my gps guidance) the first one did give me stomach cramps which were quite painful and terrible smelly wind Shock for about a day. The next times I took it I had no side effects and it cleared up. Canestan doesn't work for me and I must have had a really bad case because I've never had to take that many tablets before- and I've never had the stomach pains before either. You poor thing hope it gets better soon

Festivelyfedup · 17/12/2012 23:47

Thank you everyone. You are all very kind. I've taken a tablet and so far no side effects and I think I'm starting to feel better already.

OP posts:
littleladyindoors · 19/12/2012 18:13

Yay for feeling better!!! I bever gad any side effects from the tablet Hope it goes away for good now especially over christmas!

AllSnowballsAndNoKnickers · 19/12/2012 18:17

I had thrush for a year till I gave up sugar - it went almost overnight. Just worth considering......and maybe it's not the wine but you won't know that until you've given up sugar and then try the wine. Good luck - there's nothing much funny about an itchy fanjeeta!

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 19/12/2012 18:18

I have never had any side effects from the oral tablet. Give your partner one too, if you have chronic problems. He is probably reinfecting you.
