"So Morrison's Fishmingers have prepared a a 3 Fish Roast."

What the actual feck?

Hmm

Morrisons response to complaints on their facebook page:

"We've looked into this for you and can confirm that this advert was for 'non meat eaters' rather than vegetarians. We apologise for any confusion and have passed your feedback on to our Advertising Team for future reference."

I haven't seen/heard the advert so I don't know if it uses the word vegetarian specifically or not. But if it does, and thats the response (which seems to be the suggestion from facebook) then they are utterly stupid. And as a fervent bacon butty muncher, who has plenty of very exciting tasting vegetables and veggie meals, they are stupid anyway and obviously think their customers are incapable of good imaginative cooking.

Incidently, instead of passing feedback to the advertising team, how about just sacking them since they've also run an advert this year showing the dog being fed christmas pudding and vets have been warning people not to do this as it dried fruit can cause acute renal failure and death in dogs.

Nice work.

SolidGold, my own 'logically consistent' justification case for eating fish not meat is that I'm happy to eat anything I would kill myself, but not something I wouldn't. Works for me! Grin

I call myself a 'pescetarian' to anyone who'll understand, but find it's easier for most people to understand 'vegetarian', which is useful, since "I don't eat meat" doesn't always work (people often seem to assume that's something temporary and/or optional). Confused

StrawberryTot · 17/12/2012 11:08

Sounds gross!! Although as a vegetarian I don't think my Xmas dinner will be boring - I bloody love gravy laden vegetables (veggie friendly obviously) Grin

JugglingMeYorkiesAndNutRoast · 17/12/2012 11:09

Yeh, I feel the trouble with the word pescatarian is it can easily sound like you eat fish all the time/ a lot rather than occasionally which is probably more likely for most.
I appreciate your thinking flow and feel slightly the same. I have been fishing myself for example but wouldn't want to work in an abattoir. It can be an ethical choice for several reasons.

WelshMaenad · 17/12/2012 11:11

Fish-are-friends-not-food!

My mum makes a cracking peanut roast. I always cadge some even though I eat turkey as well. Definitely not boring.

Three fish roast sounds vile.

ivanapoo · 17/12/2012 11:23

WTAF? Are they really that clueless?!

And the usual reason Xmas dinner is dull for vegetarians is because some bore at the table decides to quiz them on why they don't eat meat...

Turkey also has to be one of the dullest meats going. I'm making savoury veg pies (with lots of booze and cream in).

I do miss the Christmas hams though...

ChestnutsRoastingonaWitchesTit · 17/12/2012 11:26

Always thought that the compulsory xmas turkey is the most boring thing about christmas. Why don't they market a 3fish roast (wtaf?) for everyone but vegetarians...they're the one who have the most imaginative alternatives to eat.

Beaverfeaver · 17/12/2012 11:33

I'm not a veggie but I don't like turkey .

However I love potatoes, stuffing, veg and salmon etc so still love it x

FivesGoldNorks · 17/12/2012 11:34

Pmsl at fishmingers
I also read the op as a 3 foot fish roast...which made me think of subway

DameMargotFountain · 17/12/2012 11:36

i'm a pesky pescatarian and am shuddering at a 3 fish roast...fucking minging indeed

mind you though, morrisons have recently shown ads where they are feeding dogs with dried fruit - apparently this can be fatal - and despite being contacted by animal welfare groups, i understand they have not accepted that this is the case, merely retracted the ads...

Theicingontop · 17/12/2012 11:36

I am more than happy with a massive pile of roasted sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots, stuffing, yorkshire puddings...

NumericalMum · 17/12/2012 12:35

Tried to book a Christmas lunch for 12 with one vegetarian. Every single one of the restaurants I emailed told me they had fish as one of their vegetarian options.

SantaWearsGreen · 17/12/2012 12:35

That sounds gross.

I used to be pescetarian but not many people know what that means so its easier to just say you are vegetarian- it is often followed by the question 'do you eat fish' anyway Hmm

Now full on vegetarian. There's like 20 vegetables on our plates and stuffing.. No space for meat anyway, meat eaters must have MASSIVE plates.

fatlazymummy · 17/12/2012 12:59

I used to be a pescatarian, like others I just used to say I didn't eat meat. I didn't have any rmoral reasons, I just didn't like the taste. I may well eat fish again if I fancy it, though not this particular product.
I think a lot of confusion arises because a lot of people just can't seem to get their heads around the idea of people not eating meat. I have been offered the classic 'wafer thin ham' and chicken even though identified myself as a vegetarian. Choosing to eat fish but not meat just muddies the water even more for some people.
Anyway, as a vegetarian I do find it harder to get excited by Christmas dinner than many meateaters seem to do, though I don'tfind it boring as such. I also find it harder to answer the question 'what would your last meal as a condemmed man be'. Nothing really stands out, though I generally enjoy my food, so I suppose there may be something to it .

sashh · 17/12/2012 13:03

Is it cooked with eggs? If so you ANBU because then people with dairy intolerance can't have it.

ConfusedPixieThinksSheIsAnElf · 17/12/2012 13:54

I heard that advert this morning and did wonder if I'd heard it right! Roast dinner is my favourite meal! It's be boring if I were a boring veggie, but most veggies I know have a more interested palate than the meat-eaters I know!

sashh: People with a dairy intolerance can have eggs... Wink

MikeOxardInTheSnow · 17/12/2012 15:19

Haha, fishmingers is right, this sounds gross, and a bit crap. Xmas dinner is fab with or without turkey. Some posh fish finger will not improve it at all, it'd just make it wierd.

FreshGoosedandStuffedLetticia · 17/12/2012 16:28

I heard the advert and did do a double-take, but Morrisons did not use the word 'vegetarians', they used the phrase 'non meat-eaters', which is perfectly acceptable.
To be honest, a three-fish roast of factory-farmed salmon and and over-fished cod is way less sustainable than a free-range bird.

"It's ok to eat fish cos they don't have any feeeeel-ingssss" sang Kurt Cobain in Nirvana's Something in the Way from the seminal 1991 album Nevermind.

Hmmmm. Fish DO have feelings, Kurt. I saw how they all flapped about on the deck of a trawler after a fisherman had hauled them out of the sea, on Rick Stein.

DH is a vegetarian and we went to a pub in South Wales for some sunday lunch. "Vegetarian pasta" was the only option available to him so that's what he had. When it came out, it was a plate of tagliatelle with a whole trout dumped on top. DH's face was a picture! He is a vegetarian but he is most offended by sealife. The landlord couldn't get his head around why we weren't impressed. Hmm

Changeforthrday · 17/12/2012 17:31

Sounds revolting. Glad I actually am a vegetarian!

How can it be boring? Loads of roast veggies, Christmas pud, Christmas cake, mince pies... Yummy.

12ylnon · 17/12/2012 17:53

First of all, christmas dinner is NOT boring for veggies... i have hardcore meat-eating friends who love coming to ours for a roast on xmas. All depends what you have!
Second, as others have said, vegetarians don't eat fish. Ever.

ivanapoo · 17/12/2012 17:56

Baubles that's classic. Did it have its face on? I was once served pea and ham soup by a friend's mother who thought vegetarians were just high maintenance lefties as "it only has a little bit of ham in it".

Yeah fish get the worst deal of all as they are out of sight underwater and not cuddly or cute. What other farming method involves killing loads of other types of animal while you're at it and then throwing them in a heap never to be consumed (i.e. bycatch)?

I used to be a pescie on the same reasoning that I could fairly happily catch, kill and eat a fish myself. But so so few fish are actually caught that way that that argument is sort of meaningless to me now.

Morrisons have changed the wording of their ad now, hence what you heard Letticia, but I would argue that fish is still a type of meat anyway.

HolofernesesHead · 17/12/2012 18:02

Why on earth should a veggie Christmas dinner be dull, anyway? Turkey is way duller than this or this.

trueblood1fan · 17/12/2012 18:04

im a veggie & have onion tart yum :-) fish eugh....
