to ask if anyone gave their DC a name and then realised it didn't go with your surname?

We have a given DD a name which we love but have just realised that the abrreviated version of her name sounds very short, twee and cartoonish with our surname. I don't want to give her name in full but it's along the lines of like Lucy Lamb or Milly Bull.

It's too late to change her name but I am really worried about this and potential teasing. Her full name sounds lovely but its very likely that her name will be shortened (we shorten it already). We didn't really think about how the nickname would sound with our surname.

Some might think I'm worrying about nothing but this is really bothering me. Has anyone else ever realised they made a mistake with their DCs name and has it caused any problems?

Fret not. My son was universally known as SamJam until he was about ten, or "the Samster"

I thought Samuel James was incorruptible, but no...

Glitterknickaz · 16/12/2012 23:20

Nup, not us.

The Peacock family calling their son Drew on the other hand....

Hey OP, could have been worse (like my example)

CollieEyeOfNewt · 16/12/2012 23:25

There used to be a reporter on southern ITV news (was it TVS?) that was called Chris Peacock. Said quickly in news reporter fashion...

The deputy head at my school was Phil Hiscock.

Glitterknickaz · 16/12/2012 23:26

Ohhhh I remember him... Meridian wasn't it?

goldenlula · 16/12/2012 23:31

I was very nearly named after a famous make of jeans as my parents chose a first name they liked and it wasn't until someone actually said it with their surname that my mum realised what it would sound like. Thankfully they opted for an extended version of the name.

COCKadoodledooo · 16/12/2012 23:51

We considered carefully and did discount a few names that didn't sound quite right. Have ended up with a Spud and a Duck anyway Hmm If that's the worst they get called throughout their school careers though I shall be happy!

CollieAndTheEyeV · 30/12/2012 01:00

Meridian! Yes, that's what the channel was called. Thanks Glitter, it had been bugging me. I knew TVS was wrong.

MaggieMcVitie · 30/12/2012 01:03

I went to school with a Richard Stiff, always Rich, never Dick, oh no! He changed it to his wife's surname when he married.

yousmell · 30/12/2012 08:58

very funny thread.

you can change a babies name at the registry office up to a year old. after that it's deed poll.

but if you really love the name and it suits the child, why change?

lightrain · 30/12/2012 09:02

What's wrong with Lucy lamb/ milly bull? Both fine to me anyway

LuluMai · 30/12/2012 09:16

Nothing goes with our surname! It's long, foreign and complicated! I just made sure I found a name that wasn't too long and was easy to spell and pronounce for poor ds! It's bad enough being lumbered with our surname without having a foremane that's hard work too.

BigShinyBaubles · 30/12/2012 09:22

My married surname is crap. I wish I'd got my oh to take my name.
I couldn't give any of my dss my favourite boys name because it sounds dreadful.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 30/12/2012 09:27

I know of someone named William Miller who gets Billy Miller (odd!)

we named dd and then realised a few days later her name is my nickname backwards so I put my full first name on stuff her name is also on so people dont realise!

NumericalMum · 30/12/2012 09:27

My dd has a similar name to the ones you are worried about and everyone loves it. I was also worried but as it was the only girl's name we all liked it seemed to make sense to use it!

SamuelWestsMistress · 30/12/2012 09:28

I knew a Philip Fish once. His middle name was ago liver so he was Plilip O Fish, which always made me laugh inwardly to myself.

Groovee · 30/12/2012 10:31

I know a Donald McDonald and an Alexander Alexander. Someone suggested to a friend who's last name was Carlyle that they named their son Kyle.

CoolaYuleA · 30/12/2012 10:36

We thought about this so managed to avoid by having to discount most of my favourite names any mishap - thanks to an unusual foreign surname.

One of my teachers at school was called Mr Dick Grin. I felt really sorry for his son though, who I liked a lot, because they called him Thomas. This then became Tom, so Tom Dick - so hard to refrain from shouting "Where's Harry?!" at him.

CollieAndTheEyeV · 30/12/2012 11:56

MaggieM Grin Portchy?

FreePeaceSweet · 30/12/2012 12:00

I don't know how true this is but my brother says he works with a bloke whose surname is Tate, his girlfriend has a son called Levi who will take his name when they wed...

GreatCongas · 30/12/2012 12:20

I went to school with a Christopher peacock
Didn't click until we had changed schools

My history teacher was Richard holder

ComposHat · 30/12/2012 15:38

I went to university with someone called A. C Hunt.

Actually his parents demonstrated extrodinary foresight as he was a Cunt of the highest order.

Inaflap · 30/12/2012 20:02

Have come across a josephine King. Parents called her by her full name but she was known at school as Jo. Went to schhol with Amanda Pond who had an older sister called Henrietta. Also know of a Charity Storr. Have a colleague who taught Albert Hall. I wouldn't worry too much.
