that cost about £20.00 and then burn right down through the middle leaving about a tenners worth clinging to the jar sides - I'm talking to you too, Yankee Candle!

You're supposed to push the sides in as the melt.

deleted203 · 14/12/2012 22:46

You are? With what and how? (Without burning ones fingers).

And you have to burn them long enough everytime to liquidfy the whole of the top. Not just for a hour to cause the 'hole' if you want a short burn use a melt or a tea light

ChiefOwl · 14/12/2012 22:48

I bought some yankee candles for the first time the other day and the sales lady told me you always need to let them burn for at least two hours each time, to allow the wax to pool then make sure you trim the wick each time..

Sorry may be too late for yours

50shadesofmeh · 14/12/2012 23:30

It's called tunnelling so you need to burn for a few hours each time so the wax is an even pool up to the edges each time.

deleted203 · 14/12/2012 23:32

Okey doke. I'll try it. But I usually let them burn for quite a while and still seem to have this problem, although I've never trimmed the wick. Many thanks.

As others have said you need to burnt them until the wax melts all the way to the sides and you shouldn't have to push the sides in. You can buy shades or illuma lids to help it burn more evenly

SPsFanjoIsSantasLittleHoHoHo · 14/12/2012 23:35

£20 for a candle? You can get about 20 tea lights for £1 Grin

deleted203 · 14/12/2012 23:39

lol...I know you can SP - it's what I usually do, because I smoke (in one room only) and it's my token effort at making the room smell better. I just thought I'd go 'posh' as they smelt fab and I thought they'd mask the fag smoke better.

Smoke menthol and make it minty Grin

AlreadyScone · 14/12/2012 23:45

Blimey that sounds like a lot of hard work for your £20.

I very rarely buy the Yankee Candle tealights from the garden centre when they are reduced to about 59p and they do smell bloody fantastic...

...but for £20 I would get an oil burner/joss stick holder and a box of Nag Champa :)

cantspel · 14/12/2012 23:45

I love Yankee Candles.

If you just want to mask ciggie smells try the tarts

AlreadyScone · 14/12/2012 23:48

Tarts! That's the word I was looking for. Tarts are good (and cheap)

TheOriginalNutcracker · 14/12/2012 23:51

Am I the only one that always hates the smell of all scented candles ?? They give me a headache, and smell vile.

cantspel · 14/12/2012 23:51

but they dont all smell the same so surely they cant all be vile

TheOriginalNutcracker · 14/12/2012 23:55

Ive never smelt any nice ones lol

cantspel · 14/12/2012 23:56

you are sniffing the wrong ones lol

deleted203 · 14/12/2012 23:58

Ha! I shall try the tarts! I was thinking that a huge candle in a jar would be longer lasting and therefore a 'budget' buy rather than hundreds of bloody tealights. Menthol cigs? Yucky yuck! They are just wrong! It shouldn't taste like you are cleaning your teeth when you're sucking a lungful of smoke it.

sucking smoke in...not it!

SPsFanjoIsSantasLittleHoHoHo · 15/12/2012 00:01

I agree about the menthols!

ViperInTheManger · 15/12/2012 00:01

I was told that each time you use a candle you should measure the diameter of it in inches and burn it for at least that many hours. If you burn it for too short a time and do not liquefy the whole top it will then just burn down at the width for the rest of the candle.

I wonder could you use that candle wax like a wax tart in a burner?

aderynlas · 15/12/2012 00:02

Only ever buy yankee candles when they are reduced to half price, always afew on offer.

deleted203 · 15/12/2012 00:03

Oh crikey Viper - I failed my Maths 'O' level 5 flaming times....that sounds too tricky for me! Am I measuring across the top in a straight line or round the circle?

OP posts:
cantspel · 15/12/2012 00:09

any left over wax can be used like a tart in a burner.

Tarts are good value as out of each one you should get at least 3 tea lights worth of scent.
The tea lights are pretty but if you want the scent you need to burn a box full to smell anything.
Might treat myself to a trip to the yankee candle shop tomorrow as i fancy something christmassy to burn.

deleted203 · 15/12/2012 00:12

Agree with you on the tea lights, cantspel - I've found them a waste of time because of the lack of smell. So what do I do with the left over wax? Mangle it all together? What do I use as a wick to light? I must be dumb but I'm looking at sad lumps of wax and wondering how I salvage it.
