that cost about £20.00 and then burn right down through the middle leaving about a tenners worth clinging to the jar sides - I'm talking to you too, Yankee Candle!

I usually hate scented candles but now you've got me wondering if there might be a pine one?
We abandoned our tatty artificial tree this year in favour of a real one as we are having people round and thought the smell would be lovely. We seem to have bought the only pine tree that doesn't smell of anything at all Confused.
(Looks very pretty though).

We always have a real tree, and I don't think they smell much (although we don't buy anything posh, like). We're fetching it tomorrow (and I'm wondering if it will last 10 days or will be a sad brown twig by Christmas Day with a huge pile of needles on the carpet). I never thought of a pine candle - but I bet you can get them. If not, gingerbread? Or mulled wine?

break chunks off and put it in a oil burner with a plain tea light under it to melt it.
I have several yankee burners so you can get a nice big lump in but if you only have a small oil burner it will still work but the scent might not be so strong.Yankee Candle!

Pixel there is a scent called mountain pine which might suit.

Icelollycraving · 15/12/2012 00:24

I sell beautiful candles. You need to allow the top of the candle to liquefy,if not you will get tunnelling. Burn a scented candle for around 2 hours, that should be enough to fragrance an average sized room. Trim the wick each time for a cleaner burn.
Many candles at the cheaper end of the market (& some cheeky expensive ones) purely dip the top of the candle so it smells great the first couple of times & then of nothing but wax afterwards. You need a candle with a high concentration of fragrance blended right through.

We did consider going down to Halfords for a load of those pine-scented air fresheners in the shape of a tree and using them to decorate the tree Xmas Grin.

cantspel · 15/12/2012 00:25

winter wonderland is along pine based

cantspel · 15/12/2012 00:26

winter wonderland is also pine based

Pixel · 15/12/2012 00:26

Mountain pine, ok thanks.
Bit concerned it might smell like toilet cleaner but hey, I'll give it a go!
We've got a lovely garden centre 10 mins walk away that has stacks of Yankee candles.

ThatBlokesANutter · 15/12/2012 00:28

Ugh - Yankee Candles. Carcinogenic.

Try something decent. Diptique or Neem.

Pixel · 15/12/2012 00:29

Winter Wonderland sounds much nicer.

Sorry have hijacked, will go away now Smile

Icelollycraving · 15/12/2012 00:30

Diptiqye have a pine candle for Christmas :)

cantspel · 15/12/2012 00:31

We have an actual yankee candle shop in worthing. Wall to wall yankees and it smells divine.

deleted203 · 15/12/2012 00:35

Thanks, cantspel. I'll try that. Ice many thanks - and I know what you mean about the lack of smell after a while (which is why I poshed up to Yankee Candles - too many cheap ones that didn't smell of anything).

Fucking hell ThatBloke - I'd not heard of Diptique but I googled it and they're £45. I could buy LOTS of fags for that amount Grin.

Impressed that no one's said YABU but has offered helpful advice, though. (Not unreasonable - just incompetent Xmas Grin)

You're not hijacking Pixel (humming 'walking in a winter wonderland' Smile). We're all things candle and smell related!

cantspel I went in once and it was lovely, all those jars beautifully lined up. Unfortunately I had to leave after about two minutes as I just could not stop sneezing. Lush does that to me too Sad

Icelollycraving · 15/12/2012 00:44

I have many many diptiqye candles. It's a beautiful way to watch your money go up in smoke!

deleted203 · 15/12/2012 00:50

Xmas Sad Scatter I LOVE Lush! Just walking past and sniffing!

OP posts:
cantspel · 15/12/2012 00:51

Scatter stick some cotton wool up your nose and take an antihistamine. It will be worth it just for the joy of seeing all the pretty candles and the tart burners with matching votive holders and the reed defusers and the plug ins and....... can you tell i am a bit of a yankee addict lol

Pixel · 15/12/2012 01:00

I'll come back then Xmas Smile.
Actually I really must go to bed! I'm multitasking atm. Have foolishly promised to knit new cardigans for my friend's two little boys for Christmas and have left it a bit late to start so am frantically knitting. Am also watching cheesy magical Christmas film on tv and Mumsnetting on laptop propped up on footstool.

I don't mind the candle part of the garden centre, the smell is quite pleasant and as Cantspel says some of the glass jars etc are beautiful. I only went in Lush once and that was more than enough. It was vile, I thought I'd be sick.

SomeTiggyPudding · 15/12/2012 09:49

"£20 for a candle? You can get about 20 tea lights for £1" - I think it cost me £1.49 for the packet of 100 that I just got from IKEA.

Question to all those experience wick trimmers out there. How short should I trim my wick?

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 15/12/2012 09:51

What are tarts?

ISawSantaKissingThePortlyPinUp · 15/12/2012 09:54

I love yankee candles, I use tarts though and only half of one at a time as I'm stingy and they smell just as good :) Kringle candle are made by the same people and are really cheap at the moment, I think it's about £14 for a tart burner and 16 tarts at the moment.

fuzzypicklehead · 15/12/2012 09:57

You can re-melt the leftover wax into a new candle (use cotton string for a wick or buy a wick at hobbycraft) or if you have a tart burner just chuck the leftover wax in there to use it up.

My token christmas effort this year was melting down all of the year's candle ends and pouring them into vintage teacups with wicks--nice pressie.

Icelollycraving · 15/12/2012 10:08

As short as poss,about 3mm.

SomeTiggyPudding · 15/12/2012 10:11

Thank you.
