dd used her own money in a charity shop on a tombola clearly aimed at children. prizes were toys and games and a few wrapped items. dd won a wrapped. parcel and was really pleased until she found a half used bottle of roll on deodorant. even then instead of getting upset she tried to give it to me. I asked for it to be changed and instead of just saying she couldn't lady volunteer launched in to lecture about how children of today should be grateful for what they get.

I got dd a small toy in another shop.

aibu to think no one would want this prize let alone a seven year old girl

Dd (8) bought a tombola ticket and won a book about all the different whiskeys you can get Hmm luckily they allowed her to change it though :)

I've had this a few times, and have to say the charities involved have swooped the gift for something more suitable
They seemed pleased the a child had won at all
I think it would have been nice of them to swop, but not obligatory

Svrider - how can you be on the fence about a used deodorant?!!!

complexnumber · 14/12/2012 16:09

We would have laughed and walked away.

Pourquoimoi · 14/12/2012 16:09

Who said that the woman volunteer was old?

fuzzpig · 14/12/2012 16:13

Eeuuuwwww gross! How could you tell it was half used though? Are you sure it wasn't just a not-very-full bottle (in the same way that a large crisp bag has relatively few crisps in for the size of bag) - trying to play devil's advocate here...

Pandemoniaa · 14/12/2012 16:13

What a peculiar thing to put in the tombola! I'd have thought anyone would be underwhelmed to get a half-used deodorant but it is particularly inappropriate in a tombola aimed at children.

Beyond what you've already done and said there's little more you can do. But were you talking to the shop manager?

SledsImOn · 14/12/2012 16:14

No one. I assumed it because of the 'children of today' comment, implying that she was aware of children from another era who would have been more grateful.

KenLeeeeeeeInnaSantaHat · 14/12/2012 16:34

Completely unused deodorant would have been an unfortunate prize, but the lady wouldn't have been U to refuse to swap it. Half-used is just unhygienic and disgusting! I can't imagine children of any era being grateful for that.

CaliforniaSucksSnowballs · 14/12/2012 16:51

Ewww. My Dd won a set of four shot glasses, she was thrilled to bits I was a bit Confused

stormforce10 · 14/12/2012 17:06

In that case sod playing devil's advocate... that's vile :(

TinyDancingHoofer · 14/12/2012 18:36

I thought some tombolas had booby prizes? Could this be one?

CombineBananaFister · 14/12/2012 19:50

That's pretty grim. I know charity shops=second hand but surely anyone would draw the line at half used toilettres. Am about to have my tea, feel a bit bleurggh now. Your poor DD, she sounds lovely for not being upset about it.

Svrider · 15/12/2012 15:37

Coz tombollas are usually for charity , ran by volunteers
I'd have thrown away deodarant, and brought cd a small toy

Mrsrudolphduvall · 15/12/2012 15:40

I have the dubious hnour of sorting out the tombola prizes for school fair.
Mostly lovely items.
This year, we had a half full bottle of Parker ink and a diary for 2010 with entries.

treesntrees · 15/12/2012 18:10

what makes you think the volunteer was old. Most of the charity shops near me have mostly young/ish volunteers; But yes horrible.

NewFerry · 15/12/2012 18:18

If its a national charity then tbh I would contact the head office and just let them know. I can't think of any circumstance in which it would be appropriate to offer a half used roll on deodorant as a prize.
