dd used her own money in a charity shop on a tombola clearly aimed at children. prizes were toys and games and a few wrapped items. dd won a wrapped. parcel and was really pleased until she found a half used bottle of roll on deodorant. even then instead of getting upset she tried to give it to me. I asked for it to be changed and instead of just saying she couldn't lady volunteer launched in to lecture about how children of today should be grateful for what they get.

I got dd a small toy in another shop.

aibu to think no one would want this prize let alone a seven year old girl

Thats disgusting, gross. I'd write and complain. Ewww.

BluelightsAndSirens · 15/12/2012 18:24

Eww that is really really gross, charity or no charity that is just not on!

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 15/12/2012 18:29

Grim.

Maybe it was intended as a 'dud' win - but those are mostly in blind auctions not tombolas.

Is it a chain or indepedent?

seeker · 15/12/2012 18:33

"SledsImOn

Who said that the woman volunteer was old?"

On mums net, anyone who does something horrible is always old- didn't you know?

OP- I would have asks for it tonbe changed, and because I'm a natural born complainer, I would have banged off an email to th charity's Head Office when I got home. And I would have bought dd a consolation prize.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 15/12/2012 18:39

Grin at seeker re the 'old' thing. You are so, so right.
Op, I'd have marched back to the stall and have asked 'Are you serious'?
Sounds like somebody put it in as a joke.

SledsImOn · 16/12/2012 06:06

I did explain why I said old Sad

Sorry if it offended anyone. It's just the sort of thing someone old would normally say. I have no problem with old people in general, not unless they are horrible.

Schmoozer · 16/12/2012 08:52

Unbeleveable that some dozy sod went to the trouble of wrapping up a filthy old deodrant and sticking a raffle number on it !!!
In the old days, it could have been posted off to Thats Life !

halcyondays · 16/12/2012 09:56

I was expecting to say Yabu, as If she just isn't like the prize, tough luck. But what were they thinking putting out a half used deodorant as a tombola prize? So Yanbu.

whois · 16/12/2012 09:59

YANBU

stormforce10 · 17/12/2012 22:21

to settle the dispute she was probably in her late 60s

peaceandlovebunny · 17/12/2012 22:33

tombola is a lucky dip - you get what comes.

seeker · 17/12/2012 23:02

Oh, don't be silly, peace- yes, you get what comes, but not if it's a half used roll on deodorant!

SantaWearsGreen · 18/12/2012 00:52

That is grim..

Why would you even put a full bottle in a CHILDRENS tombola?? .. Confused

Hegsy · 18/12/2012 00:58

YASOOONBU! that's just rank!

MurderOfGoths · 18/12/2012 01:51

That is truly grim

ChristmasInTheSnowsBest · 18/12/2012 01:59

tombolas really are lucky dip so you can't pick and choose but thats disgusting and shouldn't have been anywhere other than a bin!

Iheartpasties · 18/12/2012 05:59

grim!

whatsforyou · 18/12/2012 06:13

I work for a charity and donations we have been given include many bottles of used toiletries, used make up,a used hair brush with hairs still matted to the barrel, jigsaws with missing pieces helpfully labelled 'only 3 pieces missing' and my personal favourite a doll without a head!

All handed over with a smile and a patronising comment about how they want them to go to someone who appreciates them Angry

So no OP, you were not BU but she probably thought you were!

Rosa · 18/12/2012 06:29

YANBU at all, I would have done the same. Charity shops are bloody lucky to exist thanks to volunteers and people who donate and buy. They could have easily replaced the deodrant with a small book or soft toy and made a child happy. After all she bought a ticket its not as if it was free anyway. Even if it was a general tombola with mixed prizes I still would have found it disgusting.

a) No it isn't: name your sources Grin, but seriously, stop stereotyping (and see [b]] bleow)
b) yes you have explained but I have come across the 'this didn't happen when we were young' routine many a time and oft on these very boards and it sometimes turns out that the old dears are into their 30s or Shock EVEN OLDER
c) OP has now said she was probably in her late 60s...not a teenager it's true, but scarcely in her dotage, and probably still capable of rational thought.

That said, OP, of course YANBU
