I am under occupying my house (its what I was housed in when I needed a home) as its a 3 bed and its just me and ds. I'm well aware of the changes to benefits because of this, and have looked at down sizing (i would find a swap v.easily) but I physically couldn't afford to do it if I wanted to.
I don't know if its different with other councils but ours off no support, yet to move it will cost you a huge amount- removals, changing of details for everything, bills etc, reflooring (in some cases- many I have seen have no flooring and I've spent ££££ on this house, flooring, repairing and decorating) etc. Surely if they need the houses enough then they're going to have to aid those moving?

Running water?????

Your fucking joking.

I'm writing to my mp after I have a massive tantrum. my house took 500 years to get running water.

Next you will be telling me they have electric and that people who live in them are allowed to buy carpets and have furniture and do things like go to work.

DeepPurple · 15/12/2012 21:19

The op isn't asking for running water, electric or a roof over her head Hmm she wants the council to pay her moving costs and to pay her or someone else to change her utilities over for her.

Everyone has to pay moving costs. You can either pay to move or do it yourself for far less. Why should the council pay to move the op?

As for decorating, that's part and parcel of moving. Beyond it being safe, it's not up to anyone else to pay to decorate your house. If they did then surely it would be easier to move every 5 years than pay to decorate?

I have no problem with people who need help getting help but this op is taking the piss.

council houses shouldn't be for life because circumstances change.

They should be a leg up - not a life-long perk

No, I'm not jealous. And it is a perk.

Jingleallthejay · 15/12/2012 21:38

a perk a bloody perk Angry what do you people want people on the streets or maybe up to their eyeballs in debt or perhaps just to not exist some people will never own a house some dont want too, it isn't a frigging leg up to something better ,

The op isn't asking for a roof over her head. She wants someone else to pay for her moving costs. Not really the same is it?

Nancy66 · 15/12/2012 21:40

what world do you like in to think that being given a home you would never normally be able to afford is not?

There are many many countries where there is no such thing as social housing. I doubt any of the homeless people there, or those living in shanty towns (no running water there) would be chucking a tantrum over not getting their moving costs paid for. Social housing is a benefit to those that use it. It's not a case of saying that the op shouldn't have a home, just that she is being incredibly entitled to think someone else should pay for her carpets and curtains!

Jingleallthejay · 15/12/2012 21:43

well the thread went onto the council house debate purple it always does, and nancy where do you expect people to live, fwiw i paid rent for my house not that it matters

Nancy66 · 15/12/2012 21:44

I'm not saying they shouldn't be housed, I'm glad they are. I just don't think the people that are housed should expect to keep their homes for the rest of their lives.

There are too many people in social housing who started off in need but whose fortunes have changed - yet they stay put, enjoying the PERK of affordable housing.

Jingleallthejay · 15/12/2012 21:44

I agree with you Deep if you get a move or a downsize pay for it but some people think social housing is emergency temp housing it isn't

DeepPurple · 15/12/2012 21:45

Have you being sniffing something usual? Where has anyone said that anyone should be living in a cardboard box?

My parents are in a council house should they move my mum has always worked part time and they could never afford a mortgage deposit what should they do

DeepPurple · 15/12/2012 21:47

Plus, the op will save money by moving. Overall, the move will pay for itself if she's willing to put some effort in to moving. Before complaining it would be worth actually getting some quotes.

If I'm understanding right, she'll now have to pay extra for the spare room or she can move and not pay for it?

DeepPurple · 15/12/2012 21:47

Not pay the extra that is.
