Yes. Did you not do history and geography at school?

notMarlene · 12/12/2012 12:46

Hardly unreasonable, more like unworldly.

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 12/12/2012 12:46

Yes, but not ancient Greek history.

I haven't heard of it. So in my eyes YANBU, but then maybe we Abu

RSVPforChristmaslunch · 12/12/2012 12:48

you live you learn

EverythingsDozy · 12/12/2012 12:49

Yes I've heard of it but thought it was Egyptian, not Greek.
Was Cleopatras father called Ptolemy?

BabysPointlessPocket · 12/12/2012 12:49

No I hadn't either. Or my ds2's name til I saw and fell in love with it here. How are you supposed to pronounce Ptolemy?

EdithWeston · 12/12/2012 12:50

It's an Egyptian name, held by Cleopatra's father, two brothers (husbands) and son.

notMarlene · 12/12/2012 12:50

It's tolemy with a hard T.

FriendlyLadybird · 12/12/2012 12:50

Well I had, but that is one of the benefits of a Classical Education darling. My DH told me wanted to call our DS (before we knew that he would be an S) Ptolemy Exuperius. I was never quite sure how serious he was.

And we didn't, by the way.

FriendlyLadybird · 12/12/2012 12:51

The Ptolemies did indeed rule Egypt but they were Greek.

Nooneelseisallowedafergus · 12/12/2012 12:53

My general knowledge is fair to good as well. I'm basing this on the fact I once got to the final of the weakest link. And am q good at family Christmas games.

I knew it was a name, but not one that is used in this day and age. Poor children.

catgirl1976geesealaying · 12/12/2012 12:57

Yes I'd heard it

I think it's a nice name

notMarlene · 12/12/2012 12:57

I know twins called Ptolemy en Tansy. Tolly and Tansy. Very nice.

MaryBS · 12/12/2012 12:58

Yes, I remember reading about the original Ptolemy, but I was also at a park once where a mother was calling loudly for her son with the same name (poor kid).

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 12/12/2012 12:58

I'd heard it because the architect on that BBC programme about saving run down historical buildings was called Ptolemy.

nannyl · 12/12/2012 12:59

not sure you are being unreasonable...

i had never herd of the name Rubaab until last night

CajaDeLaMemoria · 12/12/2012 12:59

It reminds me of phlebotomy. Not that it is at all relevant.

SugarplumMary · 12/12/2012 13:01

Yes - Cleopatra's ancestors. She was the last Queen of Egypt though her younger half-sister ruled somewhere else and some of Cleopatra's DC survived her.

Dynasty started by one of Alexander the Greats general and possible relation - who grabbed Egypt after his king?s death. They carried on practise of accident Pharaohs and married their sisters to consolidate power.

YANBU. I've heard of it, not got a clue who/what/where it is.

stargirl1701 · 12/12/2012 13:03

YABU. It's fairly widely known as part of history.

degutastic · 12/12/2012 13:03

I had, as I did Latin (lots of Greek refs!) and Classics at school. However, it also has always reminded me of phlebotomy too, caja Xmas Blush

SugarplumMary · 12/12/2012 13:04

Never heard it used as a modern name - I mean its incest contestations I would have though would have put people off let alone it pretension.
