ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/12/2012 14:23

I have seen it written down, but have never heard it spoken aloud.

CoolaYuleA · 12/12/2012 14:25

I heard of it long before we studied the Egyptians at school.

When I was seven we watched a television series called Dark Towers at school bloody scary! it was one of the Television for Schools series with the orange letter covered puppet called "Wordy". The main character in that series was called Ptolemy (Tolly).

The next series was The Boy From Space. He was silver.

Going into the dining room to watch half an hour of tv was the highlight of the week (probably because there was nowhere near the amount of children's tv there is now, and we weren't allowed to watch much anyway as we had to play outside all the time).

Even the blue clock that counted down the time to the start was exciting hehehe!

I can't believe people have not heard of it. Ptolemey soter was one of the most influential people in king alexanders life.
His dynasty ended with Cleopatra 7th. It is he who oversaw the building of Alexandria which was one of the most enlightened places on the planet.
Cleopatra was one of the most educated people in her dynasty and in the known world at the time.

Alexanders story and the aftermath of his death is a very interesting story.

Horsemad · 12/12/2012 14:29

I love the names Ptolemy & Malachi, wish I'd have been brave enough to call my two DS those bames.

GreatCongas · 12/12/2012 14:29

I had heard of it but from a book not through having learned anything at school.
Classics? I wish

skratta · 12/12/2012 14:31

I obviously know the historical Ptomelies, but I hadn't even thought that anyone would use it for a modern baby. I think I once thought that it was quite a nice name, but so unusual that I wouldn't ever use it, but that was years ago.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 12/12/2012 14:37

I vaguely remember it from school, but school was a long, long time ago and I couldn't have put a history to it.
How horrid and utterly snobbish are some people on this thread.Shock
And I've never met one in my life, it's certainly not a popular name in Scotland.
And no, we didn't do classics either.

Wasn't there a Ptolemy somewhere in the Narnia books? that's what i associate the name with.

FireOverBethlehem · 12/12/2012 15:01

I'd heard of it, but not because of history / Greek lessons - it's the name of the tortoise in the Tale of Jeremy Fisher, the Beatrix Potter story.

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 12/12/2012 15:04

Reada it in the Meg and Mog books. Meg goes on a trip to Egypt Grin.

MummytoMog · 12/12/2012 15:08

Erm YABU. Did you not have a copy of the Usborne Guide to World History as a child? Or watch the Seven Cleopatras? I wouldn't call my child Ptolemy, but I do know a cat called Ptolemy. Mind you, I tried to persuade DH to call DS Corin. B@stard said no.

notMarlene · 12/12/2012 15:08

Lol, no. The parents of Ptolemy and Tansy are some of the least pretentious people I've ever met!

Heike is usually a German female name. I have a German friend called Heike. Its pronounced with an A at the end, except by BBC sports commentators, who pronounce it wrongly, with an E sound.

honeytea · 12/12/2012 15:15

I knew the name from the Jeremy Fisher book his friend was called alderman ptolemy tortoise Xmas Blush

Cozy9 · 12/12/2012 15:19

Never heard of it, how do you pronounce it? Puh-Toll-Emm-Ee?

Cozy9 · 12/12/2012 15:19

Sounds like something Malcolm & Cressida would call a child.
