To want people to stop fucking staring at me in the gym?

chinglebellsbatmansmells · 08/12/2012 22:12

It's hard enough to motivate myself to get off my lazy ass without feeling uncomfortable while I'm there, all sweaty and red faced.

Why do people have to stare anyway. I dint fucking stare at them while they're puffing and panting, it's just RUDE.

Can't I just sweat and MN in peace fgs!

It really puts me off. Sad

I don't think so, there's plenty of machines free. I think they're just rude. Xmas Sad

sorry OP but you are being excessively paranoid.

I get accused of staring at people - then I point out that I take my glasses off in the gym and cannot focus on anything more than about six feet away.

99.5 of people in gyms are far more worried about how THEY look than you

chinglebellsbatmansmells · 08/12/2012 22:38

It's a huge gym. 2 of each machine and the others are empty. I'm certainly not holding anyone up.

girlsyearsapart - 'at least they are trying to do something about it' patronising much???

chinglebellsbatmansmells · 08/12/2012 22:40

I hope so. It's just a pet hate of mine. I hate anyone looking at me, it makes me irrationally annoyed and paranoid.

OP posts:
girlsyearapart · 08/12/2012 22:42

Nope. Just saying what I think.
If I was bothering to think anything about it.

TidyDancer · 08/12/2012 22:43

I was thinking just that, ChippingIn.

Sleepwhenidie · 08/12/2012 22:43

Unless you are the large lady who goes to my gym and runs on the treadmill in capris and just her bra (which I'm pretty sure you can't be if you are typing) - tbf it is quite a sight... you are almost certainly being paranoid.

Otherwise, what damesaggar said Smile

AuntieMaggie · 08/12/2012 22:44

I'm with girlsyearapart. I go almost purple and sweat a lot more than most people when I exercise and until they're used to me they worry I'm about to keel over or just stare at me in disgust. I don't care - I'm enjoying myself and doing something that's good for me!

cafecito · 08/12/2012 22:44

so I started going to my gym. Then a guy started talking to me one evening. He gave me his email. I didn't use it. Then he kept timing his visits to coincide with when he knew I'd be there (very late evenings) and he was like.. so you never emailed... and so it continued for weeks and he'd come over and talk to me every time he saw me sweay and disgusting, I got so annoyed I stopped going. People interacting in the gym = not cool unless invited. I have spent ghastly sums of money on it since and I maybe go 3 times a month. ouch. I've vowed to start going again a lot (from monday)...reaches out to chocolate biscuits in the meantime...

girlsyearapart · 08/12/2012 22:45

Which I generally don't. Too busy wondering if people are wondering why I'm bright red- cant control my temperature..

girlsyearapart · 08/12/2012 22:46

Fairly sure you can't patronise somebody by having a fleeting thought in your own head...

girlsyearapart · 08/12/2012 22:48

cafecito you should ve reported him to the manager.
Ive worked in places where certain members have had to be barred for behaviour like that

cafecito · 08/12/2012 22:48

but OP, if they're just looking, I think we all do that. If they're on machines or whatever and you walk past it's natural to look completely absent mindedly. They won't even register you are there they're probably zoned out thinking about work or whatever. Honestly. I hate people lookng at me too because I have low self esteem and want to disappear half the time but really, nobody is looking.

cafecito · 08/12/2012 22:50

girlsyearapart I mentioned it to my trainer and he was like 'tell me who it is' but I felt bad. The guy is perfectly lovely but it really put me off going, it was my one place to zone out de stress, not have to see anyone and it became way too much effort to dodge him, ruined it totally.

TeaBrick · 08/12/2012 22:50

You know what you should do? Get your ipod on, concentrate on enjoying your exercise, and don't bother looking at anyone else, then you won't know if they're staring at you.

chinglebellsbatmansmells · 08/12/2012 22:52

Thanks cafecito, I think it is that really. I feel exactly like that.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 08/12/2012 22:55

So, from your op, you were there at 22.12 on a Saturday night. Do you think your gym might morph into a pick-up joint, like they say supermarkets do on weekend evenings?
I'd be uncomfortable with it, tbh - but thankfully my gym seems to be full of people ignoring each other me. Grin

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 08/12/2012 22:56

Grin well tell yourself that they only have eyes of jealousy and desire. It will make it all so much more palatable.

chinglebellsbatmansmells · 08/12/2012 22:58

Shotgun, mines 24 hr so it's all students at this time, and I'm no cougar. Xmas Grin

worra I have zero motivation at home. MN made me buy that Shred thingy and I used it once and now it's growing dust.

I discovered this lady recently - free workouts on Youtube, you can just do 10-15 mins or make an hour-long session by combining different workouts. I find it helps my achey back, and it's not dull or militaristic she's mad.
And no one can see you!

manicinsomniac · 08/12/2012 23:46

chances are it's paranoia but if not YANBU

I'm afraid I notice other people in the gym. Every single one. I'm not so bad with people on the gym floor but in classes I'm terrible. But it's about insecurity in myself, not any desire to judge anyone else. I notice them and their bodies because I have to work out exactly where I fit in terms of weight compared to the other women in the room. If I'm not the thinnest or at least among the thinnest then I'm likely to just leave Xmas Blush

So, if I've ever stared at you, I'm sorry, it will have been an issue with myself, not with you. Maybe other starers are like that too.

NotTodayThankYou · 09/12/2012 01:25

YANBU.

Next time you go to the gym, take some photos of yourself there with you. When the idiots start staring, hand them a photo and tell them that now they won't need to stare anymore.

Hopefully it will shame them out of it!
