Not much to this post, just that if you feel that being a teacher is such hard work and so unrewarding and how the children and their parents are so awful to them, then stop moaning and don't be a teacher!!!!

And a Xmas Biscuit to you too!
The first of many, I'm sure. Xmas Smile

happystory · 07/12/2012 15:18

Teaching is hard work, though no harder than lots of others jobs, it IS rewarding and parents and children are (mostly) delightful and supportive....

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 07/12/2012 15:23

I know lots of teachers, never hear the

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 07/12/2012 15:23

Them whine much. Just a bit, like with any job.

legojunkie · 07/12/2012 15:24

Yawn, yes it's all the teachers fault.

Have a big Biscuit

YANBU if they really are whining. Agree there's nothing to whine about. I love every second of my job, can't believe I get paid to have so much fun. Yeah, so the hours are long. Big deal, the holidays are great too! And I don't mind long hours if they're enjoyable. The pay's pretty good too in my opinion.

But YABU (I think) to think that we do whine. Most of my teacher friends love it too. I have one who finds it relentless (her words) but she is quitting as soon as she can fidn something else to do.

AyeOopMoose · 07/12/2012 15:28

I love being a teacher. All those lovely holidays, leaving at 3.30, maternity pay, sick pay, pension......

oh yeah and the bloody rewarding fact that I am helping to nuture and develop young adults.

Sod off OP!

AyeOopMoose · 07/12/2012 15:29

nurture of course, not a teacher who cannot spell just fat fingers!

threesocksfullofchocs · 07/12/2012 15:29

everyone moans about their job
even parents moan about being parents.
why should Teachers not moan

Tincletoes · 07/12/2012 15:29

Yes, universally they all do

Just like women drive badly and men love football

bigkidsdidit · 07/12/2012 15:29

How ridiculous!!

So, when we are having a moment and whinging about being a parent, whinging about our kids.......should we just give em away an not have em then?

Everyone moans about their jobs, not just teachers. I love my job usually but I still like to have a whine about it sometimes.

I actually admire teachers........I couldn't do it!

hoobledoo · 07/12/2012 15:31

one would never moan, one would never get stressed and one will enjoy your biscuits dipped in a fine cup of judgemental tea. Thank you very kindly :)

Yes, or we could just pay them properly and not give rise to a whole generation of illiterate adults? Just another idea.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/12/2012 15:38

I think we whinge an appropriate amount. Mostly.

larrygrylls · 07/12/2012 15:39

I think that the majority of teachers are good and admirable and do one of the most important jobs there is.

However, the one big issue I have with the profession is the way teachers believe that they should be treated as serious professionals, yet do not want to be judged the way other serious professionals are. They do not like the idea of performance related pay or the idea of sacking bad teachers (if I am wrong here, I would love some teachers to come on and tell me that they are in favour of either of the above). If teachers feel that what they do is critical (and I do feel that) then surely they would not want incompetent teachers to remain in the profession. Equally, they would want really good teachers to be suitably rewarded for doing a fantastic job (and not just by assuming a greater management role, which I know is an option).

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/12/2012 15:39

I would never be a teacher because if you think they complain, you would be astounded how much I would. They do a great job, for not great wages, conditions or praise. Thanks Teachers.

We have performance related pay. DH is an engineer (private sector) and laughed when he saw my appraisal booklet. My appraisal process is certainly more rigorous than his. We also have capability procedures for poor performance. We are completely judged on our results. In my school, two lessons judged as satisfactory (now requires improvement) is enough to trigger a short "support" period with targets, followed by formal capability.

larrygrylls · 07/12/2012 15:48

Sovery,

I think that performance related pay is being brought in but certainly the teaching unions are whinging big time about it. I think the criteria would have to be a combination of subjective and objective metrics, clearly not just results because, as you said, you cannot choose your pupils.

Are schools not already judged on a variety of metrics plus a subjective inspection? Surely if it can be done for schools, it can be done for teachers. The problem, as I see it, is that superb teachers will always be superb, the really bad should be out but aren't and the mediocre are not really incentivised to improve.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/12/2012 15:50

The mediocre in my school are incentivised to improve by the threat of capability.

Whether that is an effective driver is debatable.
