WIBU to wear a tux to the work Christmas party

catgirl1976geesealaying · 06/12/2012 11:10

Because the dress code said:

Men - Tuxedo

Ladies - Must wear a cocktail dress (and then specified the acceptable colours)

And for some reason it annoyed me.

Ladies "must"

Feck off

I probably am being unseasonable but still.............plus I can't be arsed buying a new dress. A tux would be easier

YANBU. How rude of them. I would hate the word 'must' as well.

WilsonFrickett · 06/12/2012 11:17

Do it. I hate bossy dress codes.

DPotter · 06/12/2012 11:20

could you also persuade a fellow male colleague to wear a cocktail dress - colour of his choice! I def like the tux idea - go for it

WhereYouLeftIt · 06/12/2012 11:20

Bloody hell, where do you work that they feel they can dictate to everyone in this way? Xmas Shock

healstorturepeople · 06/12/2012 11:22

Haha DPotter. That would be great! Do it OP and take photos!

Pixieonthemoor · 06/12/2012 11:26

Easier....and infinitely more chic and on trend!! You will stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons!

ChaoticforlifenotjustChristmas · 06/12/2012 11:26

Xmas Grin DPotter

YANBU the must would annoy me too.

langho · 06/12/2012 11:27

I get what you are saying, and my DH's company ( multi national, based in America) insist on the same but a lot of the women ignore the colour code and even cocktail dress and wear something nice. However if you wear a tux you will look as if you are being a sulky teenager rebelling!

Why would a tux be easier? Have you already got one because if you haven't you may as well buy something that you can wear again and again.

FivesGoldNorks · 06/12/2012 11:30

Do it!

DaveMccave · 06/12/2012 11:31

There's no way I'd even bother going! but yanbu.

redexpat · 06/12/2012 11:32

langho How do you know the OP won't wear it again?

Themumsnotroastingonanopenfire · 06/12/2012 11:33

A colour code! The only time I have heard of this is when particularly deranged Bridezillas are obsessing about the tonal composition of the wedding photos. Why would you require a colour code for a work cocktail party for the love of Mike?

ClippedPhoenix · 06/12/2012 11:35

Absolutely!

langho · 06/12/2012 11:35

I don't know, but there can't be that many occasions where a tux is called for. It is a bold statement it would lose it's impact a second time especially if she was in the same company but a different outfit whether it is trousers or dress or whatever could be more cost effective.
However don't shoot me down, it was only a response to AIBU!!

redexpat · 06/12/2012 11:44

Fair point Xmas Wink

WilsonFrickett · 06/12/2012 11:44

I have a tux, wear the jacket all the time over party dresses to 'toughen them up' (I believes that is the fashion phrase). I've had a lot of wear out of the jacket. Not so much the trousers because I got them tailored just before I got pg and my shape changed so they don't fit so well.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 06/12/2012 11:45

I would be annoyed at being told I must wear something too. Although actually I would love to have a chance to wear a cocktail dress Smile

I wouldn't be buying one for a work party though.

If it was me I would just wear a nice dress, there is no way I would wear a tux though, I would feel daft. What are they going to do though, turn you away?

langho · 06/12/2012 11:46

Despite what I have said I have a tux style jacket that I too wear a lot but not the trousers. They look dreadful on me!

ConferencePear · 06/12/2012 11:53

They are showing their lack of class. A tuxedo is American for dinner jacket.
Perhaps they are trying to be helpful by letting you know that you don't have to turn up in ball gown, but they would like to dress up ? Wink

WiseKneeHair · 06/12/2012 11:57

I have a female friend who would always wear a DJ and trousers for any ball at university.
She always looked great and stood out from the crowd, so it's a YANBU from me.

whois · 06/12/2012 11:58

Oh I wouldn't. You'll look much nicer in a dress. The quite fat (think hockey goalie) lesbian PE teacher at my school always used to come to come in a tux to black tie events and she looks very silly making a point like that.

60sname · 06/12/2012 12:23

Hmm maybe she wasn't making a point and just wanted to wear something she felt comfortable in?

catgirl1976geesealaying · 06/12/2012 13:06

I'm doing it....or a version thereof. I have a nice black playsuit with very flowly legs and I'm going to wear that with a Victorian tail coat, a high neck white silk blouse and an undone bow tie

I'm wound up with work anyway but this just made me go nnnngggh

Thank you for all the comments ..... I did do a silent judgey sniff at thier use of tux not dh but then I've replicated myself so can't grumble too much :)

I might look like an eejit but honestly "ladies must wear"

No.

What kind of work party has rules about what colour you have to wear? Confused.

I probably wouldn't go. Though if you do, then YANBU to wear the tux.
