WIBU to wear a tux to the work Christmas party

Because the dress code said:

Men - Tuxedo

Ladies - Must wear a cocktail dress (and then specified the acceptable colours)

And for some reason it annoyed me.

Ladies "must"

Feck off

I probably am being unseasonable but still.............plus I can't be arsed buying a new dress. A tux would be easier

Yes actually I must know- what are the acceptable colours for an office Christmas party?

Bella88 · 06/12/2012 17:56

That sounds fab, catgirl. Good for you!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 06/12/2012 17:58

wait, a tuxedo is American for dinner jacket? Isn't a tuxedo a tuxedo? Fancy outfit you rent and wear to a wedding? Some men own one, George Clooney types own several, that sort of thing? (American here, I'd not heard there was a difference in our tuxedos to yours, so it's an honest question) Like these?

Those are dinner jackets?

Pandemoniaa · 06/12/2012 18:03

I'd go in a dinner jacket or full tailcoat too. Probably with steampunk accessories just to be fucking awkward. Either that or I'd refuse to go because actually, nobody tells me to wear a cocktail dress. Let alone in an "acceptable" colour.

UterusUterusGhaLaLaLaLaLi · 06/12/2012 18:08

Please post pics! Tgat outfit sounds fab.

I need to know what colours are asseptable too!

PackItInNow · 06/12/2012 18:12

Wear a tux and say you've had a sex changeWink.

ScarletLady02 · 06/12/2012 18:12

YANBU...it would piss me off too. I'd probably wear a dress but I'd wear it with my big DMs and a narky sneer Grin

My Mum used to sing in a band and wear a tux (along with the other female singer)

LaCiccolina · 06/12/2012 18:14

Got ur point but I suspect they meant 'smart' rather than casual/office wear. Specifying colours is grim and daft. I'd def wear alternate colour therefore!

I'd also go for tux, just expect 'funny' comments all night.... Try not to kill someone...

alarkaspree · 06/12/2012 18:15

GreenEggs, yes, those are dinner jackets in British English.

OP I also HAVE to know

  1. what are the acceptable colours?
  2. WHY are there acceptable colours? Are they company colours? E.g. you work for Harrods so must wear green and/or gold; or cadbury's and you have to wear purple?
  3. is it all worth it? I once went to a work Christmas party which featured dogems and a helter-skelter, and it made having to buy a new dress much more worthwhile.
FelicityWasSanta · 06/12/2012 18:17

I go for a dress in a different length and colour, but that's probably because I'm a wuss. I would also email management about the tone of the invitation.

Oh and do tell what colours they deem acceptable?

catgirl1976geesealaying · 06/12/2012 18:32

It is going to be a Steampunk :)

The acceptable colours were black, white or silver

OP posts:
catgirl1976geesealaying · 06/12/2012 18:32

They are not the company colours

OP posts:
catgirl1976geesealaying · 06/12/2012 18:32

a bit Steampunk that should read

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 06/12/2012 18:34

I can see why that would irritate.

PessaryPam · 06/12/2012 18:42

Steampunk is fun!

EuphemiaInExcelsis · 06/12/2012 20:17

Wtf is Steampunk?

Pandemoniaa · 06/12/2012 20:22

Steampunk is fucking brilliant! So glad to hear this, OP. I mean it isn't as if you won't be making a proper effort, is it?

And for anyone wanting an explanation, I particularly like this one:
?It?s sort of Victorian-industrial, but with more whimsy and fewer orphans.?

Here's a fuller explanation.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk

catgirl1976geesealaying · 06/12/2012 20:23

it's a kid of victorian, industrial, punk, goth look

Grin

It's fab...I'm not describing it well

OP posts:
EuphemiaInExcelsis · 06/12/2012 20:26

More whimsy and fewer orphans is good. Xmas Hmm Xmas Grin

SantyClaws · 06/12/2012 20:27

MUST wear a dress - and then tell you what colour? WTAF?

Your outfit sounds fab - deffo wear anything OTHER than a dress.

HanSolo · 06/12/2012 20:28

Specified colours????? Shock

black, white, silver doesn;t scream steampunk to me!

browns, creams, greens, lots of leather....
