I am so sick of not being able to follow stories correctly because I get confused by who is a BFF, or a BBF, a DH, DC, a DSiL, a DMiL, DFiL, DC2R (dear cousin twice removed) or whatever - where did this trend start and why are we perpetuating it? It's been going on for years, and I've had enough of it ;)

Its when people put Dmum, Ddad, Dsis. What on earth is there any need to put a D before Mum? Isn't the whole point to shorten it, not make it longer??

I don't like it either. I don't so much mind generic internet abbreviations but no other forum or website I've seen uses topic-specific terms with such gay abandon. There's one parenting/family website I use which doesn't use them at all and discourages their use from posters too. However it's unlikely to change round here so I skim past it and try not to use them myself.

But you do get used to it, and now it's just second nature when I write or read a post..
If I could go back in time when MN first started I'd ban it, but it's now so prevalent, we can't go back.
You can still post without the abbreviations, no one will care, but if you stay you will be drawn in, like I was
