To think Marcus Wareing really needs to get his priorities right

He was on Masterchef last night saying that he has sacrificed family and friends for cooking; if he had to take off his chef's coat right now he would be absolutely nothing; cooking is his life etc etc etc.

AIBU to think he just prepares fancy food, he is not saving lives or undertaking ground breaking research or writing great literary novels... he is just preparing fancy food?

Getorf we save all year so we can go on our wedding anniversary and not have to sob worry too much about the prices. We couldn't get a table this year :(

And if you've seen Marcus on any other programmes he comes over as extremely pleasant and personable.

When people are paying £100+ per head for their dinner you have to be serious about it. You can't just sling the stuff on the plate any-old-how, people are paying for perfection.

Trazzle, I know that all his chefs respect him hugely and it is a real accolade to work there. I think he has a reputation as a fair boss and a decent chef to work for. However he doesn't suffer fools gladly and having met him a couple of times he has the air of someone very lovely who could cut you to pieces with a couple of withering comments

Lunch is usually quite busy as it's popular with city businessmen. You're more likely to get a table on Saturdays or Friday evening

They only let you book 3 months in advance normally. We tried booking 3 months in advance and the date we wanted was full, or near enough - they still had a 9pm sitting. I would commit murder waiting that long to eat. But our anniversary is a Thursday and close to Christmas this year. We had no issues booking for Tuesday/Wednesday dinner, or any weekday for lunch.

Food is going to be eaten in a few minutes, however beautiful it looks or amazing it tastes. A great novel will live on for centuries and provide a record of how people lived/thought at a certain time in history

Lunch is truly great value, £50 for 3 courses, coffee, wine, water, and the quality is superb.

A friend of mine used to work at the Berkeley and she said that the 'diners' on last nights programme were all staff and management!

I was totally Shock cus I thought it was all real!

Surely most top chefs have to sacrifice a lot of their family life? The hours they work are not exactly family friendly. I was impressed to hear that Michel Roux's daughter is having to go through the hardships of training in France without parental influence easing the way.

2cats, that doesn't surprise me as it's hardly likely that a 2 star restaurant was ever going to risk letting 2 completely untested chefs loose on their actual paying guests

I still think there's something sad about sacrificing your family and friends to be a good cook. Obviously if you want to do well in your career you will have to make compromises and give up certain things. But to sacrifice your family and then boast about it on tv?? Sorry, but I still think he needs to sort out his priorities.

And to all of you making such a fuss about Marcus's poor abandoned, sacrificed family - he is married with 3 children - to someone he met working in a hotel in Sussex. They've been together for 20 years.

I think Monica's a bit of a cow actually. The way she says "what we're you thinking??!" when presented with a plate of blood, sweat and tears makes me want to smack her.
Although there's every likelihood that she's hamming it up (naive)
