To consider taking poorly DS2 to a sling meet tomorrow?

MrsHelsBels74 · 28/11/2012 22:34

DS2 has bronchiolitis but I think is getting over it. There's a sling meet tomorrow which I really want to get to, having had 2 sling failures already & a baby who hates being out down anywhere.

WIBU to take him & risk infecting other babies?

Yes that WBU in my opinion.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 28/11/2012 22:36

What's a sling meet?

Yes, YABU to risk infecting other babies. Obviously.

goralka · 28/11/2012 22:36

yes apart from possibly risking her health further, she might infect another baby and on top of that your name will be mud with the other mums.

MumsKnitter · 28/11/2012 22:37

Yes

MrsHelsBels74 · 28/11/2012 22:38

A sling meet is where you get to try out lots of slings & possibly borrow one to see how you get on with it before you buy one. I really need to get a sling that DS2 gets on with, we've already bought 2 that haven't worked out & I just can't afford another failure.

goralka · 28/11/2012 22:39

you can buy a sling and take it back to the shop surely?

hiddenhome · 28/11/2012 22:40

You shouldn't take a sick child out. You wouldn't like it if someone dragged you out when you were trying to recover from illness. The colder air might exacerbate his chest too Sad

BertieBotts · 28/11/2012 22:40

Don't take him - it's not like it's a little cold.

Do they have a facebook page? It might be worth sending a message or otherwise trying to contact the people who run it explaining that you haven't been able to attend because you didn't want to pass on your DS's illness but that you're desperately in need of some help with your slings, they might be happy to arrange to meet up another time or suggest another group which a few sling-wearing people are likely to be at (in our area you're almost certain to come across a few at the La Leche League group!)

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/11/2012 22:40

Bronchiolitus is awful and for a newborn they can end up on a ventilator in bad cases. Please don't pass it on

CSIJanner · 28/11/2012 22:43

I attend a weekly group with a sling library attached - it's a friendly group with a lot of young babies and quite a few newborns. A lot of pregnant mums attend to get a feel for how they would like to wear their babies, sometimes borrowing other newborns to see how it will feel. I know you're having difficulty finding a sling that works for you but waiting a week not worth avoiding the risk? If the meet is less frequent, could you contact the sling leaders and ask if they can come to you as a one off?

And once LO has recovered, is there a sling library near you that you could try? "slings and things FSOT" on Facebook might be able to advise the closest to you.

mrskeithrichards · 28/11/2012 22:46

My oldest spent his first Christmas in hospital with bronchiolitis, was great.

He was only 12 weeks old, tube fed, the lot. So go, your sling is important and I'm sure there are other babies out there looking forward to a week in hospital.

Sirzy · 28/11/2012 22:46

You would be very unreasonable to go.

Think logically about it - would you want to feel responsible for another mother going through what you have while your little one has been poorly?

mrskeithrichards · 28/11/2012 22:49

Hospitals have special wards just for this over the winter. It is rife and pretty shit so don't add to the problem.

livingfortoday · 28/11/2012 22:51

Hmm a bit, would it be possible to ask someone to come to yours in a day or two, or do you not know them? Hope your little ones better soon.

Yes it's caused by RSV virus which is easily spread. It's a virus that is pretty common but in young children causes bronchiolitis which can in serious cases be awful.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/11/2012 23:00

Can u not email
And ask if there r any others in an area u could get to. Please don't take him out. My three week old dd2 spent new years in hospital thanks to this nasty virus. It was pretty damn serious she was very close to complete respiratory distress. U don't wanna share the love trust me. It's horrendous :(

bedmonster · 28/11/2012 23:02

I didn't realise it was contagious, but if so, then I would say no. Not nice knowing that he could infect other babies, especially close to Xmas (obviously not at any time but docs etc all close for a few days and appts are hard to come by at our surgery at the best of times but esp now).
Sorry you will miss the sling meet but if you are going to risk him infecting others it's not on.
I hope he gets better soon and you can get out and about as presumably you have an older one too.

Pleasesleep · 28/11/2012 23:03

Yes sorry yabvu. Its not fair to run the risk of passing it on. Bronchiolitus is nasty.

Softlysoftly · 28/11/2012 23:09

DD1 had this repeatedly and still needs an inhalo. YABVU as its not as if baby will even be sat in a pushchair away from others, she will be infecting every sling you try.

It's hard when they won't be out down but they do grow out of it and you just need to be proficient at one handedness for another couple of weeks.

Alonglongway · 28/11/2012 23:11

Yes - one of my DCs had bronchiolitis and it was horrible experience. If I have it right, it's just a cold virus but the issue is that it produces a very thick mucus that their nasal and bronchial tubes can't manage so they gasp and choke. So yes it's infectious and not worth the risk. It was this time of year when DD2 got it - we were staying on the Kent coast for a few days when she got really sick and I ended up in hospital with her.

Posting this whilst sat in hospital watching my baby dd struggling with bronchiolitis. RSV is very contagious, please don't take him.

When we finally get out of here I am finding so cotton wool and wrapping dd in it til March

NiceOneCenturion · 28/11/2012 23:22

WIBU to take him & risk infecting other babies?

^ You must know the answer to this, surely? Of course you shouldn't take him. Apart from anything else, bronchiolitis can recur so for your own baby's sake I would make sure he is well recovered. My DS had a second bout a month after the first and it was worse second time around.

Can't you order online and return slings? Or ebay, they keep their value pretty well if you need to resell.
