To not want meat every single night .

Shinyshoes1 · 28/11/2012 21:55

I work 3 or 4 nights a week DP is at home the nights I'm at work but he's full time . Not relevant but don't want to drip feed .
Anyway
I do the majority of the cooking , sometimes I even slow cooker stuff so when he's home with the DC's there is decent food cooking whilst I'm at work .

This week I've been unable to pre cook so he's fed them Basically shit food every night , however , I figure when home I'll cook some good food .

Tonight we had fish , there was a little gripe as to " where's the steak " but I said that " there's no harm having fish once in a while "

I've told him tomorrow is going to be meat free too . He straight away blamed Mumsnet for some "ridiculous idea they've put in your head " or something I've read etc , and why can't we have meat .

I'm sick and tired of fucking meat every fucking night and would love some fish or meat free meals now and again . it's not often but to continuously eat meat pisses me off

He's called me selfish cos we have 3 DC's , and he says " what about them " tbh they couldn't give a shiny shite if we had a couple of meat fee meals now and again ,

AIBU

I don't really want to cook for all of us and cook a meat meal for him . We have always had the same meals I refuse to cook different meals

He will leave the house at 8.00 am and come home at 6.20pm and will be quite horrified to not see half a dead animal on a plate

I thought you were referring to ahem....never mind.

noisytoys · 28/11/2012 21:58

YANBU

EverythingsDozy · 28/11/2012 21:59

Of course YANBU. I certainly wouldn't cook two meals! DH, DD and I eat the same or don't eat at all.

Tell him if he wants meat, get up at 5.30am to slow cook it all.

OpheliaPayneAgain · 28/11/2012 22:00

I dont understand the issue with grilling a couple of chops or steaks as to laboriously making a nut roast.

Provided your meat free meals are high in protien, noi a problem

But, fish, well, they are flesh too Grin

Mintyy · 28/11/2012 22:01

Yanbu, but I am certain you know it.

CailinDana · 28/11/2012 22:02

Complaining about a meal someone else has cooked you from scratch is incredibly rude. If you don't like it, you don't eat it, but you certainly don't insult the person or insist they cook something else. In your shoes I would tell DP that seeing as your cooking skills aren't up to standard he can just get his own food from now on. See how he likes them apples.

StuntGirl · 28/11/2012 22:03

Unless he's going to share the cooking I would say he should eat what you cook. And that is clearly mostly meat with occassional fish/non meat meal so it seems pretty fair to me. It's not like you're cooking tofu every night is it Hmm

giveitago · 28/11/2012 22:03

Agree but it must be hard with your timetables.

Similar position. When dh cooks it's only pasta or just a plate of chicken wings followed by cheesecake or another dessert. No veg whatsoever. I do worry. But this is his culture of food and if I'm not there to cook then there's nothing I can do.

Just ensure when you're there they get the balanced meals. It can be balanced if you're doing the majority of the cooking.

But one question - why do you only cook the same meals?

Imsosorryalan · 28/11/2012 22:03

Maybe you could tell him it isn't actually healthy to eat meat every night?
Gov. Guidelines suggest meat free meals 4 out of 7 mealsSmile

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 28/11/2012 22:04

Yanbu.

I don't do meat more than 3 times a week. Chicken and fish other nights or psta with vegetable sauce.

EverythingsDozy · 28/11/2012 22:15

Is chicken not meat?? Genuine question.

exoticfruits · 28/11/2012 22:20

Just tell him that when you are cooking you choose the meal and he can take it or leave it. When he cooks he can choose.

bedmonster · 28/11/2012 22:20

Everlong >?? Chicken IS meat Confused

OP, you know YANBU if you don't want to eat meat every night. DP and I are big meat eaters but once or twice a week we'll eat veggie. Does your body good to have a little break and also much cheaper I find!! Lamb chops for example are about £6 for 2 good sized chops in our butchers, so £18 if DP and I were to have 2 each and DC to have 1 each. It's very expensive!!

Fakebook · 28/11/2012 22:25

Yanbu. I try not to have meat every night because it just gets so heavy and boring. We mix up the week with lentil curries and vegetable dishes. Dh would make meaty dishes every night if he could but luckily I'm there to stop him.

CoolaSchmoola · 28/11/2012 22:40

YANBU - my DH is very much a "where's the meat" kind of chap, although he does like fish.

As I do all the cooking and shopping I decide what we eat. I don't feed him things he doesn't like. We have quite a lot of fish (more than he'd like) and at least one vegetarian meal a week. I was vegetarian for eight years and really enjoy vegetarian food. He's in the Army and when he is away I can go days/weeks without eating meat/fish.

He doesn't complain as such, just occasionally grumbles. At these times he gets told that when he shops and cooks he can choose what we have. That usually makes him forget all about his meat fixation Grin.

squeakytoy · 28/11/2012 23:33

Grin at everlongs vegetarian chicken.. Wink

handsandknees · 28/11/2012 23:48

YANBU.

It's not healthy to eat too much meat. We eat chicken or fish once a week and beef/mince once a week, and the other 5 nights vegetarian. You can make delicious vegetarian meals and if your DH doesn't like them he can buy and cook his own food.

Off the top of my head - spanish omelette and salad, roasted veg and tomato pasta, vegetarian chilli, peppers stuffed with rice or cous cous, lentil moussaka, lentil/chickpea and veg curry, homemade pizza.

There are also lots of meat subsitutes (quorn/soya) although we can't buy them where we live, but I don't think my family would realise it's not meat if you make a nice sauce and use herbs and spices.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/11/2012 23:55

YANBU and I love meat!

Rudolphstolemycarrots · 29/11/2012 00:01

We have 2 fish days, 1 red meat day, 2 or 1 white meat day, 1 or 2 veggie day each week.

I'd hate meat each day too, it isn't balanced. Just cook a mixture and don't pass comment. He can cook/buy something else for himself if he wants.

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 29/11/2012 00:03

I came here for the same reason McPhee did Grin

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/11/2012 00:29

Yanbu I don't want to eat meat every day either

whois · 29/11/2012 00:42

Eating meat every day is actually not v good for you.

I love meat, but I also love veggie and fish. Although I find if I've eaten veggie for 6 or 7 days in a row I'll get a meat craving even if I've eaten lots of protein.

As far as I'm concerned people who think 'it's not a meal without meat' are quite uncouth and ignorant.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 29/11/2012 00:59

YANBU, of course.

Has he always been like this?

ErikNorseman · 29/11/2012 06:54

Why can't he make his own dinner? He's out 8 til 6 not 7 til 10, he can cook himself something when he gets home if he doesn't like what you have made.

FamiliesShareGerms · 29/11/2012 06:58

YANBU

DH came to his own conclusion that meat (including fish and chicken!) is not necessary every day a couple of months ago, so now we only eat it about 2-3 times a week. We eat much more interesting vegetable dishes than otherwise, and it is definitely cheaper and it feels healthier.
