AIBU or is my Grandmother?

My Grandmother was over my house and I made us sandwiches. As I picked one up to eat it she looked at me and said "YOU CAN'T EAT A SANDWICH LIKE THAT PEOPLE WILL THINK YOU'RE STUPID" Shock It's because (something I hadn't noticed before) I hold my sandwich with my thumb on top and my fingers underneath instead of the other way around. Was my Grandmother overreacting or will people think i'm stupid by the way I hold a sandwich? Confused

My wrists hurt :(

ChippingInLovesAutumn My Gran has always been, uh..., 'eccentric' Grin

I can't work out how you do that comfortably?! You must double jointed!

I wouldn't think you were stupid if I saw you but I would probably head tilt a bit Grin

snowtunesgirl · 29/11/2012 00:23

I'm currently imaging MNetters all going huh and flipping their hands round in imitation. Grin

flow4 · 29/11/2012 00:23

I often eat my sandwiches like that too, and hold my tea by the mug not the handle. :) I do have hyper-mobile joints, but it had never occurred to me before that it might be unusual. Do we get prizes?! Grin

BalthierBunansa · 29/11/2012 00:26

flow4 Maybe we should all start some kind of alliance? Grin

Do you eat your sandwiches one handed?

The only way I can get it to work is to reach over the top of the sandwich with one hand, put my fingers under the back of the sandwich, put my thumb on the top and then sort of scoop it towards my mouth with my elbow up and out. It means that my hand is coming straight towards my mouth fingertips first, instead my usual sideways on/thumb on the bottom technique.

The moment I try to use both hands at once it all goes wrong.

Not stupid - but I might boggle a little if I saw you.

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/11/2012 00:31

Unless they are really small sandwiches but still fiddley and now my elbow hurts

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 29/11/2012 00:44

I eat a sandwich like that now and again. Especially when I'm MNetting Grin

But the crust has to be facing the right. I think that's pretty weird

MrsRhettButler · 29/11/2012 00:44

I've done something to my wrist now and it hurts. I'm holding you fully responsible op for making me try to bend my wrist in a weird fashion.

Did you upload a pic because I really really need to see how its done.

flow4 · 29/11/2012 00:45

You might be onto something there pip! Now I think about it, I reckon it is a one-handed style I developed so that I could carry on reading while I ate my sandwiches! I can use two hands, but I'm more likely to just use one.

How about you, Balthier? Grin

Bogeyface · 29/11/2012 00:48

YABU

That comes under "Its a fork, not a shovel!" to me! thumb must be lower than fingers when eating a sandwich!

Bogeyface · 29/11/2012 00:56

To clarify, a fork should be rested on the index finger and held in place by the thumb if eating salad, fish or or eggs, so tines upwards. It should NEVER be held like one is about to dig a hole, so all of the fingers over the handle and the thumb underneath.

Now you know, be told :o

Charleymouse · 29/11/2012 01:01

No YANBU.

I also eat sandwiches this way, especially the ones which are liable to fall apart, ie blt or prawn etc. not necessary for the common jam butty or sliced cheese but handy for grated cheese without pickle or mayo for gluing together purposes.

Makes perfect sense to me. FIL once saw me eating one this way and declared me to be weird. Maybe it is just old folk being blardy rude. In his case definitely just rude, in your Nans maybe just eccentric.

Pennybubbly · 29/11/2012 01:05

Surely the only way you could comfortably hold a sarnie like that would be to simultaneously stick your elbows out to the side?
Otherwise, it just looks.......odd

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 30/11/2012 11:32

Ok, not stupid then. Just a bit simple Wink. Is that better?

Like some else said, I can imagine doing it with one hand but not two. Although knock yourself out Grin.

WhoeverHeardOfAWormskinRug · 30/11/2012 11:36

Not just me thinking about "t-rexxing" then?

Just tried it and I can't without sticking my elbow right up in the air!

OhFentonDUDE · 30/11/2012 11:37

Your Granny is right, that is NOT the way to eat a sandwich Shock

next you'll be telling me you leave the crusts on...

::tut::

::mutters something about going to the dawgs::

weegiemum · 30/11/2012 11:45

All of my dc are off school today (bloody fluey tummy bug thing!) and none of them can figure out how this would happen and are cross cos I took them away from watching Lord Of The Rings in between voms .

I'm going to try it at lunchtime!

Coralanne · 30/11/2012 11:47

I always cut my sandwiches into 4 triangles. Can't really imagine how I would eat them with my fingers underneath and thump on top.

At least you were at home when Granny berated you for your tble manners.

My DM is probably the same age group as your Granny and we had a family outing at a tourist resort.

At the top of her voice she said CORALANNE in a very loud voice. Everyone else at the table stopped talking and eating to see what DM was going to say.

DIDN'T I TEACH YOU TABLE MANNERS WHEN YOU WERE GROWING UP? DON'T YOU KNOW THAT'S NOT HOW YOU PLACE YOUR FORK WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED EATING.

Everyone who had finished eating quickly looked down at their cutlery to make sure that they had put it in the correct position.Grin

Coralanne · 30/11/2012 11:48

I really don't understand how you eat them Confused

As long as you don't continuously drop them, or their contents, there's no problem. So YANBU.

GhostShip · 30/11/2012 13:26

It does look stupid, the flintstones comes to mind

OhFentonDUDE · 30/11/2012 14:00

I have in mind that what you're talking about is similar to when one is holding a frizbee ready to throw, and you tuck it inwards before flinging it - is that about right?

In which case it is a bit odd Confused
