What I can't understand is why these amazing igagets don't have an option to put one word definitions on easily confusable words.

My old dedicated spell checker could.

MamaMumra · 23/11/2012 21:11

Thanks for that OP

MummysHappyPills · 23/11/2012 21:13

Yabu. "Loose" is in fact the most common mistake on mn. As in, "I need to loose the baby weight." Gah! AngryWink

MamaMumra · 23/11/2012 21:13

YABU btw

Ps no, didn't look like Kate Adie. Her ex husband was rather newsworthy though.

LibrarianByDay · 23/11/2012 23:28

YA Definitely NBU!

I've noticed the confusion with past and passed quite a bit recently.

Seperate is another annoyance - se-PAR-ate!

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/11/2012 23:31

I am well educated, but I still mix up practise and practice.

Councillor (or counceller) is acommon mistake on MN

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 23/11/2012 23:32

... for counsellor

LibrarianByDay · 24/11/2012 00:07

Affect/effect is another one that bugs me.

Cahooots · 24/11/2012 00:14

Definitly is what my iPad spellchecker comes up with when I make a crap attempt to spell Definitely. Stupid iPad.

I am innocent I tell you.

Thank you for sharing the tip, I think it might help

bonnieslilsister · 24/11/2012 00:18

I just did a search for posts I have written with definately in and I have loads Blush another thing I didn't know

Cahooots · 24/11/2012 00:19

Aha! I have just added definitely as a new shortcut on my iPad. I will never spell it incorrectly again.

shattereddreams please accept my apologies for my former crappy spelling of definitely but I have learnt my lesson Grin.

OnwardBound · 24/11/2012 00:28

Yes yes psycho I also hate how "gawjuss" has entered MN common parlance.

It was mildly amusing the first time someone used it but everyone else just stop it already.

Along with "stylee". Please, give it a rest.

Grin
katykuns · 24/11/2012 00:30

It annoys me greatly, but I avoid picking people up on it... as there is nothing worse than a spelling/grammar Nazi. Also, it invites everyone to scour what you write and pick out any mistakes.

Also, I have a lot of dyslexic friends, and think it's unkind to make them feel bad for something they can't really help.

However, I have removed people from my news feed on Facebook for writing in 'text speak'. Makes my blood boil.

HildaOgden · 24/11/2012 00:37

I always find myself imagining that people who post on chat forums correcting other peoples' grammar/spelling/punctuation must be stuck-up pedantic control freaks who would be better advised spending their time developing compassion or empathy for those who may have learning difficulties/untrained typing skills/sub-standard educations (through no fault of their own).

I'm sure I'm wrong though .

I too have spotted a great many instances of 'definately' on MN. I think it's probably the most common spelling mistake on here. It doesn't bug me as much as the incorrect use of apostrophes does though!

Moominsarescary · 24/11/2012 01:41

I was thinking about this yesterday. I noticed my phone keeps changing it to defiantly, I'm dyslexic though and don't always notice.
