A warning for you all.

My card was declined on Tuesday night in Tesco, which I was puzzled about, as I knew I had the funds. Luckily my partner was with me to pay whole I stood red-faced at the till.

Once I got home, I discovered that they had actually taken the money from my account, to the tune of almost £100.

I called the store within half an hour of getting home, and nobody would help me. I tweeted their customer care team, who were great on Twitter, but 2 days later, and they still have not returned my money.

My bank have told me all the details that Tesco need to fax them to get the money released - I have told the various people that I've spoken to, all of this information, yet still, they will not help me. They have refused to provide the information required, promise me calls back that I don't receive, and are completely useless.

I've spent more than £20 on phone calls to them trying to sort this out, and still my money has not been returned to me.

Good luck sorting it out OP.
I haven't shopped with them for 10 years since they failed to deliver my shopping 3 times (the first time the van broke down, then they rescheduled, then rescheduled again, and their system clearly couldn't cope with the reschedules) and charged my card twice for shopping that never arrived. So I was £200 down and they said it would take a fortnight for the money to come back to my account Hmm
I was lucky because I had no kids at that point and plenty in my account to cover it, but I don't like to think of what a nightmare it must be for people for whom things are tighter (ie nearly everyone).

DinosaursOnAnAdventCalender · 22/11/2012 20:46

This has happened to me before too. My card was declined and I went outside to the cash point to try there and saw that they had actually taken the money. I printed off the mini statement and went back in to show them.

Getting them to do anything about it was like getting blood out of a stone. I called the bank from there customer services desk, spoke to the manager at Tesco, kept getting passed between Tesco and the bank. Nightmare. No one would admit to having the money, the bank insisted Tesco had it, Tesco denied it and said it was a ghost payment (whatever that is)

Two weeks of calls and emails later I gave up. I never got my money back.

SweetSeraphim · 22/11/2012 20:58

Honestly, the bank have been really good, but their hands are tied until Tesco tell them to release the money as its been taken in error.

The customer service centre call me, I have to speak to someone different every time, nobody takes ownership.

I even listed all the details that the bank require, including the auth code. When they faxed the bank today, ALL of that information was wrong. My card number, that I have given to at least 3 different people, the authorisation code that they read back to me over the phone - all wrong. It feels like I'm in some hidden camera show where they're filming me slowly having a breakdown.

They pay me all the lip service in the world. And do NOTHING.

How do I tweet the thread please?

No there hands are not tied - you have an unauthorised payment - it's the banks problem. They may be telling you their hands are tied, but they are not!

starkadder · 22/11/2012 21:08

Oh poor you, how frustrating. Bastards. To tweet it I think you just post the link into your twitter feed and hash tag it %23tesco plus put @tesco in there.

Viviennemary · 22/11/2012 21:11

They are the most unhelpful and the most awkward of any Supermarket but unfortunately they are my nearest. Report them to your local Trading Standards Office.

SweetSeraphim · 22/11/2012 21:15

It's not an unauthorised payment though, Fred - it is a holding payment that was falsely declined. I can try my bank again tomorrow, but I do trust them far more than I trust Tesco at this point.

Try emailing the CEO as well -

[email protected]

I hope you get it sorted.

SweetSeraphim · 22/11/2012 21:32

Thanks Tiredmum - I shall do that too, but tomorrow. I have had Wine and can't trust myself not to shout Wink

I hate Tescos- refuse to shop there, Their food's shit too!

Teabagtights · 22/11/2012 21:36

You should automatically get the money back in ten days that's how a holding payment works if not taken you get back in ten days

SweetSeraphim · 22/11/2012 21:38

I will never shop there again. It has been a catalogue of errors, and they have been almost stroppy with me.

They've now tweeted to say that someone will be in touch over the weekend. The weekend?? I want MY money back now!

But we, the plebs, are not worth bothering about, as long as we keep feeding our money into their big greedy pockets. Anyone who has a hoole and holie coffee shop nearby, know that they are also owned by tesco!

SweetSeraphim · 22/11/2012 21:49

That's exactly right Princess. It's us against The Man, and we are over a barrel

Ring their head office and ask to speak to the operations manager. I used to work in the HO of a large retailer and this always worked.

AppleCrumples · 22/11/2012 21:54

I hate tesco! Happy to take your money not so happy to give you what you are due! Dh works there and everything is such a struggle it once took them 3 months to pay him properly whilst still happy to make him work extra hours! Rant over!

Really hope you get it sorted sweetseraphin

bruffin · 22/11/2012 22:03

It's not rescission fault the bank is lying to you.
When a credit card is declined they put a hold on the money for a few days but don't credit tesco.
I work for a retailer and it has happened to one of our customers. The bank held the money but it did not come to us.
Happened to friend, card declined 3 times and money taken 3 times. The do give it back after a few days, but the money is held in limbo until then.

bruffin · 22/11/2012 22:04

Tesco not rescission.

3littlefrogs · 22/11/2012 22:04

I never, never shop at Tesco on principle.

When you consider who owns the company and their dubious, dishonest and corrupt behaviour over the selling of council houses for votes, the hiding of assets and refusal to pay fines for said dubious and corrupt behaviour.

The sad thing is, they are taking over the world.

stargirl1701 · 22/11/2012 22:08

I had a problem with NEXT. I highly recommend emailing the CEO. My issue was sorted out within 3 hours of the email being read. I was also compensated for my trouble.

SweetSeraphim · 22/11/2012 22:16

I will definitely email the CEO in the morning. I don't even care if he doesn't help me immediately, I just want him to understand how much this has pissed me off.

OP posts:
reddaisy · 22/11/2012 22:25

Tweet it and we can all retweet and they will start doing something then.

SchroSawMummyRidingSantaClaus · 22/11/2012 22:54

This happened to us in Asda last night, card was declined so went to check the machine as we had checked it as we went in and there was enough, sure enough the money came off. Staff were really unhelpful, saying they know that the money had come off but we still need to pay again if we want to take the goods. Ended up having to do that and that was every penny we had, they told us that it was in a "limbo account" and would be back in the right account in 2 days.

I'm worrying now.

hiddenhome · 22/11/2012 23:03

Remember that all this 'in limbo' money will be earning a good rate of interest for these people Sad
