AIBU?

To be incensed by Knorr Stock Pots?

The amount of packaging (plastic, foil and paper) is shocking. It costs very little to boil some bones up with some old carrots and onions to make your own stock, so why do people buy them?

Our local supermarket don't stock it Sad (note the unintentional pun!) I thought I had seen one brand some time ago - might need to ask them to get them back in!
Struggling to cope with the idea of being on mumsnet at 5am, discussing stock cubes while holidaying in Kenya! Grin too hot to sleep

The Bisto ones are lovely. Another converted tester here. And no, I don't have the time, effort or physical ability (mobility problems) to stand and make my own stock as well as cook dinner. One or the other.

Knorr stock pots, on the other hand, are ridiculously salty and yuk in comparison.

The only thing that incenses me about them is that they've got sodding milk in them like pretty much every other stock cube out there, apart from the ones that are more chemical than stock

I'm having to make my own stock now, or avoid using it altogether.

sodding allergies

VViola I noticed the other day that popping candy contains milk! What's that about?

It's a conspiracy to make my life a misery and prevent my DD2 eating anything nice ever

or probably something to do with creaminess or taste enhancement or something

There's dairy in the strangest things. Including strawberry flavouring, that chopped cooked chicken you can buy, and salt and vinegar crisps.

If you need to make stock and find it a smelly hassle I recommend a pressure cooker. Much shorter, the smell is contained and it tastes better too. I only really make chicken stock, stick spare bones in the deep freeze and then when I have lots it takes about an hour in the pressure cooker. Very little effort.

My best friend got an electronic combi pressure cooker/slow cooker/rice cooker/steamer from QVC and it's changed her life. I'm very tempted.

I do make my own stock but even doing that isn't enough for everything I want to make - should I be buying chickens etc expressly for stock? A silly idea, these things are for convenience at a time when most people have to work. I'll bear in mind the high salt in the Knorr ones though.

If you've got a local butchers I expect he'd be happy for you to take some carcasses and bones off his hands.

I don't use them but do use stock cubes etc. I have made my own stock - but finding the time to let it simmer for hours without leaving the gas on whilst I go out/to bed etc, then finding room in our small fridge to let it settle overnight before taking the fat layer out etc are quite a lot of work. If I had loads of spare time and a big fridge I might feel differently.

I don't buy them because I think they're shit, but I do think YABU.

Kallo stock cubes here usually.

Occasionally I boil down a chicken (did yesterday), but it does take an age.

I never buy beef on the bone, so not sure how I'd go about making beef stock as I'm disinclined to beg bones off the butcher. Plus, you need to make the stock at the weekend (or I do if I'm working) and then I need to bloody store it - bloody faff! Kallo cubes - nice and easy Grin

Thanks flatpack you may be right, the local butchers is heaving on a Saturday when I am able to go but I might ask him next time. Time is a factor too I'm afraid, when I make stock it tends to be weekends I have no work on (so not every weekend) same time I batch cook. I honestly wouldn't have time to make stock for every instance that I use it.

I do make it, but it isn't something I have the time or inclination for as frequently as I'd need it.

I think the chicken one is good. I have tried to make chicken stock, twice and it was absolutely awful and had to be thrown out. I don't add any extra salt, and between 4 people (plus extra portions for freezing) it isn't very much salt. Plus the fact I have low blood pressure and run/gym 4 times a week. I could do with a bit of salt.

Mostly I use the regular Knorr or Oxo cubes. I don't have the space to store litres of different home made stock all the time.

Jeez, I think I deserve a bloody medal for cooking a variety of healthy meals for four people from scratch nearly all the time that my 8 and 4 year old will eat (who are exactly the right weight they ought to be, concentrate and are well-behaved at school, sleep well and don't have dental problems) and on two days a week making separate things for me as well for the Fast Diet.

Incensed? I think I ought to be for being berated for nothing at all. Life is not a competition to see who can knit the most lentils. I love lentils by the way. FUCK OFF.

Jeez. I consider myself a cook but I draw the line at making stock, and when people say "oh I just bung some old bones and carrot and onion and a bay leaf in a pot" I assume that they are smug/lying.
