AIBU?

To be incensed by Knorr Stock Pots?

The amount of packaging (plastic, foil and paper) is shocking. It costs very little to boil some bones up with some old carrots and onions to make your own stock, so why do people buy them?

Stock pots are FAR less salty than bullion powder or even stock cubes IMO.

We make stock when we have a whole chicken but that's not nearly often enough for all of our risotto, soup and other stock needs.

I've never known a home made stock not to be virtually tasteless

Chandon I'm incensed by stock pots as they are the worst example of over-packaging. And am probably a nutter Grin but wasn't joking

bought stock is very concentrated - homemade stock you have a great big pan of water with a bit of onion and carrot and seasoning and some old bones if you happen to have some lying around. but it tastes like water, or very very weak veg soup

stock cubes/pots, you have to be a bit careful your final dish does not end up too salty, but yes you can use just half if thats all you need to get the flavour. they keep fine - cubes just rewrapped, stock pot jelly ones go in the fridge. no trouble.

I like them. And we make stock too when we have the time.

Tried them because they were on special offer and they are advertised by some famous chef who apparently knows what he's doing but found them so salty, they ruined my stew !

I can't add much salt to my cooking (DH, sodium sensitive high BP)....most things taste fine without any stock at all so long as you've got good tasty stuff in there. I do have a tub of low-sodium Marigold powder but it gets a bit samey so recently I've started using a bit of umami paste (glass jar, lots of teaspoonfulls therein, recycle bin)

I love the stock pots, although Bisto ones are nicer. They make super lush gravy Grin

socharlotte the cost of gas used to boil up some bones and veg is nothing compared to the cost of producing plastic, foil and paper packaging (and recycling it)

Kallo low salt stock cubes for me, or home made stock when I can be arsed.

op why dont you wind ye olde beak in and find something more worthy to worry about

Seriously? I think they are appropriately packaged. I don't think you could put solidfied stock in a paper bag. The box can be recycled. In fact I'm not sure but maybe the plastic pots could be too with my local authority, they do recycle some plastic. I'm sure a lot of packaging can be improved environmentally speaking but it's far from the worst culprit.

I love them. Don't find them too salty at all.

OP, are you also incensed that they sell ready made sliced bread? Baking bread is about as hard and time consuming as making stock, plus you barely need any ingredients.

I've tried making home made chicken stock three times, it was one of the most disgusting things I've ever made. I certainly wouldn't cook with it.

me too and am huge food snob

home made stock tastes shit

Plus the fact I often just buy chicken breasts as the rest of my family will only eat breast meat.

Sometimes I just want a small amount of gravy and I want it to be just like the gravy you get in a Carvery.

I havent yet used stock pots but they are in the shopping list . Should I give them a miss then. It looks so easy on the advert.

I get Knorr stock cubes more frequently though I have to say as they are better value for money.
