oooh it riles me.

if you go out and you have to use your wipers, you should put on your lights, by law. It is in the hand book.

If it is grey and gloomy, you should put your lights on. It is not law, but it is common sense.

If you drive a black car, you even less see-able. For Gods sake, put your light on.

And if you see me flashing at you, if is not to make my car like a flashing pretty christmas tree, it is because you are driving dangerously and barely see-able. I can see you JUST because a car behind you has lights on and shows you up. PUT YOUR LIGHTS ON.

And Please don;t crash into me and then tell me you can;t see ME. I had my lights on and was less than 3mtrs away from you. I WAS SEE-ABLE.

it was dreich and dark here this morning and the number of cars on the road without lights on was unreal.

abitcoldupnorth · 21/11/2012 10:20

oooh me too, I get ranty. And silver cars too! I very nearly pulled out in front of a tiny silver thing on the motorway yesterday at about 5pm because it was raining and dark and they didn't have ANYTHING on!

Fakebook · 21/11/2012 10:20

Yanbu! Do you know what else pisses me off? When people who are driving facing the sun don't put their lights on for people who have the sun behind them. Does that make sense? They piss me off too.

Fakebook · 21/11/2012 10:21

Overuse of pissing off there.

psychomum5 · 21/11/2012 10:22

they are all idiots!!

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 21/11/2012 10:23

oh yes fakebook, that one too......also bloody annoying and dangerous

In fact, I think they should pass a law to ALWAYS have lights on. That way you always know when a car is moving towards you as you can see and judge lit cars better.

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 21/11/2012 10:24

I drive with mine on a lot of the time.

My old car was brilliant, you could set the lights to go on and off with the ignition. Somewhere (Sweden/Switzerland??) it is the law that you must have your lights on at all times. Brilliant.

Some people are just very very stupid and shouldn't be on the road at all :(

Berts · 21/11/2012 10:24

Totally! Your lights are not only to help you see in the dark, they are also so that other drivers can see you when visibility is poor (fog, heavy rain, etc).

I have a friend who has had her car written off twice by people just driving straight into her. Both times she was driving a grey car on a dull rainy day... with no lights on! Technically the other drivers' fault, but could have been easily avoided. Drives me nuts.

Fakebook · 21/11/2012 10:25

Yes, I agree. The weather changes here within minutes most days from sunny to gloomy.. Just because its daylight it doesn't mean you're clearly visible. Lights should be left on all the time.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 21/11/2012 10:29

YANBU... and can we add a biff to the bop for anyone driving around in heavy rain with their fog lights on? Fed up with being dazzled today. The clue is in the name people.... f-o-g.

psychomum5 · 21/11/2012 10:39

Mine is the other way around Berts.

I have just had car #4 written off :-(. I was driven into each time. I always drive with my lights on as I feel like I am seen, and feel that everyone should.

The people hitting me, each time, all claimed they didn;t see me.....they didn;t see me as they drove into the side of me and they didn;t have lights on showing me up in front of them!!!

well, bar the head on crash due to some idiot doing a u-turn around a bus straight into me. Lights or not he couldn;t see me as the bus hid me, and he was too thick to think a car might be on the other sideHmm

MonkeyRisotto · 21/11/2012 10:40

Dont get me started on fog lights, the number of people that put them on when it's just a bit misty! Grrrrr!!!

Highway code states you should only use them when visibility falls below 100 meters. That's the distance between the [///] [//] [/] markers before a motorway sliproad.

orangeandpumpkinlooking · 21/11/2012 10:41

Noooooooo, you do not need your lights on the whole flipping time. Grrrrr, I hate it when people do. If it is light enough to see, other drivers do not need dazzling with your lights.

When it is actually dark, or getting there, yes, lights are good. Or if it's foggy, heavy rain or snowing. But a slightly dull, British autumn day, then NO.

Sorry, personal rant. I am fed up of being blinded by people with bright lights on.

abitcoldupnorth · 21/11/2012 10:43

blimey that is bad luck psycho. Hope your insurance is sorting it out quickly.

stargirl1701 · 21/11/2012 10:51

It's a habit with me to have them on in rain as it is the law in New York State and I drove there for 6 months as a young driver.

whizmum · 21/11/2012 10:52

In this day and age, should we not have lights that come on when it is dull, and brighten as it darkens, thus solving the not on/dazzling all oncoming traffic problem.

I get fed up with the 4x4's with their dazzling halogens, high up and in my face, followed by the cyclist with the small flashy dynamo, or the lightless car, that is blacked out by the post-glare blindness

Devilforasideboard · 21/11/2012 10:54

Can we also bop people who fail to check their lights are both working and that they're not doing that irritating thing where one is normal and one is on full beam? And the ones driving on motorways with their lights on full beam?

TraineeBabyCatcher · 21/11/2012 10:55

Orange- I've only had a problem with bright lights in the day or night when they're new cars, and I'm guessing they have these new ultra bright light bulbs. Half of them look like they have their main beam on till you get right up to them. Very frustrating.

Mine are permenantly on as that's what my car is set up to do but mine aren't ultra brights, just standard bulbs.

MonkeyRisotto · 21/11/2012 10:55

I don't think it's the law to have them on here when it's raining, but you really should.

Alisvolatpropiis · 21/11/2012 10:56

YANBU. I was genuinely amazed how few people had their lights on yesterday when I was driving. It was quite dark despite it being early afternoon, visibility was poor and it was bucketing down with rain. Even on the dual carriage way not meant had their lights on.

I'm by no means a nervous driver but I'd rather have my lights on "needlessly" according to some than get hit by a lorry because I don't have them on. Also the only way headlights would blind you is if everyone was driving with their bull beams on.

MonkeyRisotto · 21/11/2012 10:57

Yes Orange, be aware that a lot of cars made in the last year or so will have their lights on all the time, due to DRL legislation. It's cheaper to do that, which complies with the law, than fit the separate Daylight Running Lights which you see on more expensive models.

psychomum5 · 21/11/2012 10:58

abitcoldupnorth. Not as yet Sad and Angry

I am injured and they are being dicks about it. again.

the crash was two weeks ago. I am back out driving again (in agony, but needs must when it is wet and rainy and you have a daughter with an immune deficiancy and so can;t get wet by walking to school), and all I see (or rather, don;t see) are moving cars and no lights in heavy rain.

nannyl · 21/11/2012 11:03

YANBU

they all deserve a bop over the head imo!

MerryCunnyFuntingChristmas · 21/11/2012 11:33

Yanbu! This is why I love my mums car, a Volvo, lights switch on when you turn the key in the ignition.

Sirzy · 21/11/2012 11:36

YANBU it pisses me off too.

My grandad taught me a simple rule of thumb for the rain - if you need your wipers on more than intermittent then put your lights on. I would rather have them on when not really needed than risk not having them on when needed.
