It used to be the case that double barrelled surnames where only for the gentry, now every Tom, Dick and Chavvy have them. What has happened?

I have umlaut envy, MI. Envy

In France, if you are the French equivalent of Ponsonby-Smythe, then it appears like that on the baby's birth certificate, but if you want to double barrel the two parents' names, it would appear as Ponsonby=Smythe. This is to show who the proper aristocracy are as the French clearly want to differentiate between peasants and poshos.

It is what working class women do when no man will marry them so they have the same surnames as their assorted children.

Well...that's charming lovelyladuree , an utterly charming attitude. I'm sure a fair few MNetters and some of the landed gentry will be rather surprised by that statement.

lovelyladuree Did I also mention my last name is doubled barrelled too?

it's nothing to do with being working class and not being married. My mum gave me a double barreled name because at first she wanted me to keep her maiden name, it's rare and dying out. But once my dad died she wanted me also to share his name.

So feck right off with your horrible comment.

I am not bothered by not having the same name as the DCs. My name is double barrelled and comes from my dad. There are many different reasons for people having double barrels and calling it chavvy is real ignorance.

There is someone on here who knows my family name. I can assure you, as can she, that we are not chavvy! Oh, and it's been a family name since before 1900.

In spain everyone has db names and no one changes their name when they get married, they keep their own db name and the kids get the first part of the db name from each arent to form a new surname(according to my au pair)

What would Nick Cleggs children's surname be,assuming he has following his wife's cultural tradition?

AmberSocks You are right, but I'm told it's always the bit from the bloke's name that goes first.

I work under my maiden name. It's great it confuses the hell out of people. Never wanted to double barrell it, would be ridiculous since both begin with the same letter. I used to know someone who had triple barrelled her double barrell when she married.
I have nothing against double barrelling. I just don't think some people really thing it through though and end up with some highly entertaining results. I do wonder whether some women choose their partner according to whether their surnames are comparable.
As for unsuitable Christian names heard recently of a young girl called Clamydia ( genuine and not urban myth) suspect she will be changing that by depoll fairly rapidly.

YABVU! In Poland, it's traditional to double-barrel your name when you get married. My SIL is Mrs Jagiello-Bradley and i think it sounds lovely!

Try again.....

I think people who use the word chav are pretty common, disgustingly rude, and must have an inferiority complex to feel the need to put others down to make themselves feel more special..
