to think that double barrelled surnames are chavvy?

It used to be the case that double barrelled surnames where only for the gentry, now every Tom, Dick and Chavvy have them. What has happened?

What happens when the double-barrelled surname kids start marrying each other?

They only get to choose one name each swooosh

I was thinking of double barrelling my name when DP and I get married so my DD has a connection to me still as she has her dads name.

But I guess that makes me a chav as I was a single mum at one point OP

Practicality, if couples don't stay together, can take mum's name. Easier than having to go through the legalities of changing name.

DD has double barrel, no hyphen in between though.
Chav is as Chav does, OP.

My dcs have my surname and when dp and I get round to getting married he will also take my name and ditch his own, where do we fit on your chav scale?

Oh that's us told then! FWIW my kids are the only double-barrelled people I know so they must be right posh.

It went like this. I named my son my surname, my son's arse of a father wanted his name. Now, seeings as I'm sole carer and practically always have been, it put me in a predicament as he threatened to forgoe his paltry maintenance therefore I conceded to his surname first then mine at the end.

Is this acceptable to you?

I HATE my married surname..I wish my DH had taken my name when we got married. Much nicer

I dated a Count for a while with a double barrelled surname. But he most usually only used half of it.

Ooooh, my mum hyphenated in 1966, before they even invented chavs, because she wanted to keep her own identity. I'm going to tell her she's one of the original chavs!

My children have two non-hyphenated surnames One is Swedish and one is Bengali. Very long, with an umlaut in there too.

I'm not a fan of double barrelled names myself! It makes me think of two types of people, super rich people or teenage mums ( not dissing them as I was a teen mum myself) I dont think I is especially chavvy.
Like I said I was a teen mum and chose the fathers name for my dd. we now have split up but I don't regret to have her dads name as her second name. But many of my friends ( also teen mums) have double barrelled the name simply coz they want the dads name but if they split up they can just knock the second last name off ( the dads in many cases that I no) so alls good! Absoulutly stupid idea! Pick one name

I'm double barrelled - before we got married I traced my family history, and it turned out that I am the last person to have my surname (we went back to the 1600s, there are other people with my surname, just I'm the end of the line for us). I also wanted to recognise that I am part of DH's family. I don't think I'm a chav!

That said, a friend of mine has done the same. I daren't say it to her face, but she sounds like a motorway service station!

Rainbow I'm the last of my line too (I'm an only child and so is my Dad). If we have children, they will have both surnames (mine and my husband's). Luckily they go pretty well together.

I got married recently. If we hadn't already had children I'd have kept my own name, but they are already here and have their dad's surname, and I wanted to share a surname with them. DH offered to double barrel our names. My immediate reaction was I didn't want to share MY surname, or give the kids a double barrel. So they're all Y and I'm X-Y.

It sounds ok together too.
